What a load of bollocks that is. Just noticed on Facebook a couple of the perfect show off 'competitive' parents from my youngests school have started posting pictures of it on Facebook. You know the sort, the ones where when your child gets a piece of homework to make something like a castle or costume, instead of doing it with them they do it for them so its the best in the class.

Basically you get an elf and put it on the shelf, and tell the kids he is Santa's spy come to live with you until Christmas as he is checking if you've been good and deserve presents. You move the elf around so thr kids think its moved by itself by magic. You might even put a little magic 'elf' door on your skirting board. Just seems really creapy to me.

The adults do 'witty things' with them and take photos and out them on Facebook......hilarious...

In my parents house, they had a burglar alarm, but when it wasn't on a red light sensor would flash.I used to tell my daughter that the light was santa checking on her behaviour at her grandparents.

My toddler son was having a mad hour the other day I simply said "Father Christmas is watching"......it was like he'd been tasered! Stopped him right in his tracks!

It was all new to me. Have done a bit of research and a lot love the concept, but quite a few people find it creepy.

Been doing this for a couple of years. Had no idea it was elf on a shelf though. We've just been doing it to keep the kid in check.

My daughter does the elf on a shelf for my grand-daughter, and the little one loves hunting for him in different places every day. First thing she thinks of when she wakes up, so gets up straight away without a fuss to start the hunt.

They soon grow up to become argumentative so and so's like us, so why not extend the "magic" as long as you can?

Exactly! That's why I told my daughter at 4 that Santa didn't exist.

I'd never heard of it, but the wife has bought one for the daughter, once my daughter has gone to bed she puts it somewhere in the house for my daughter to find the next day.
