Hey all, another little wander through sky blue history. Last week I asked about the old gaffer Gordon Strachan, and his do fall out of favor with the fans, this week I want to ask a similar question, in regards to a player.

Gary McSheffrey as you all know was a home born player. I see he had a transfer to Birmingham, something that would obviously not be seen lightly from coventry supporters. What was his reception like coming back? What was his record away with them? Did he ever win anyone back, or was he a talent that never really got going?

I personally think it was a shame when he was let go from our club, as being a homegrown player, I would like him to still contribute to the club he grew up supporting and playing most of his career.

Aidy re-signed him in 2010. Reaction was pretty positive as I remember, to such an extent that as a "Cov Kid" he got an easy ride from the fans for the next 3 seasons of generally dismal performances. He didn't live up to his billing when he returned and despite being a big name on the team sheet he never looked worthy of the hype and turned in mostly forgettable performances. Shame, but they do say "never go back".

Was fantastic in 05/06 season then he fucked off to Blues.

Unfortunately never worked out for him in his second stint.

What was his reception like coming back?

People had been talking about getting McSheffrey back for years, pretty much every Summer once it was clear he wasn't really in the first team picture at Birmingham. His reception was excellent at first, prodigal son returning-type stuff. Problem was people expected the player we'd sold, and he just wasn't that. He therefore became the scapegoat for a number of poor team performances.

What was his record away with them?

In the Championship, pretty good. I think he scored something like 15 goals for them from the left wing during their promotion season. He never cut it in the Premier League though, particularly when injuries started to take their toll.

Did he ever win anyone back, or was he a talent that never really got going?

As I say, he never really hit the heights of his earlier career. Not really his fault though, he was just one of those players that peaked earlier than most.

Brilliant answers guys, thank you for shedding a bit more light on sky blue subjects, and hopefully a little light relief from the gloom.

I like the idea of home grown talent, and hope we keep players like Wilson at the club for a long time.

Have there been any 1 club men with coventry in our history?

Didn't we try to get rid of him before he broke into the 1st team properly (Luton loan) anyway like others have said he was adored but rarely lived upto it..

He was a good player when he first signed for us, but after going to B'ham and then coming back to us, he just never had the same impact. He seemed worn out by the Premiership. I was quite happy to see the back of him.

I was at that Millwall home game - it was a us midweek and the result went against us, virtually condemning us to relegation. Don't remember McSheff missing a pen though, probably because it was so awful my mind has repressed it

Mcsheffrey was a bright prospect and in the championship scored some spectacular goals. One of the best divers in the business as well and won lots of penalties.

The club sold him to Birmingham very near to the deadline and we ended up buying two sub standard replacement. He also started well at Birmingham.

To me though he was an impulse player who wasn't a player with vision or alternate strategies. Once he got caught out he struggled.

When we had him back his pace had gone and there was nothing much left. He still made the occasional great strike but was declining rapidly.

McSheffrey scored the first goal I saw live in 2011. We beat Brighton 2-0, Juke header for the second. Was a good day as I won 200 quid down casino afterwards.

Thorn had been saying much the same privately for months previously. In fact he said he motivated players by reminding them it was down to them, with no help from "them upstairs".

Just think, at the time I thought a 13.5k attendance for a must-win game against Millwall (albeit midweek) was a bad showing..little did I know that 2 years later we'd be getting 10% of that for games...

Micky Coop was a long servant, there must be a few others.

The penalty miss which pretty much ensured our relegation was against Millwall. I remember it well because I was behind the goal when it happened. Maik Taylor saved the penalty.

He would have 1 good game on his return every 7 or 8 games and I'd often wonder he couldn't keep up that level of performance.

Scored some superb goals the season before we sold him.

Lee Hurst, came through the youth team played 49 games, then got injured during pre season training session at an army camp. Had to retire because of the injury.

Wiki says he played 3 years later for an American team, which I didn't know, and I'm clearly not including.

Agree with sutty and Grendal.

His record for Birmingham that promotion season was phenomenal - 17 goals and 19 assists from 48 appearances playing left wing.

For me he suffered a few too many injuries and lost the vital yard of pace which ruined his game.

People expected the old mcsheffrey when we re-signed him.

He became a free kick specialist @ Brum ,outshining Seb Larsson IIRC ,I don't recall him being used that way on his return.

I think when he left the fee that was talked about was £4m, if this had been true then it was good business, but it has since been said it was more in the region of £2.5m (I seem to recall a letter was published that showed we also accepted less money from an instalment because we needed the money quicker, was this from this sale?).

He scored some great goals for us in his first spell, and he was instrumental in getting B'ham promoted. He didn't appear quite strong enough for the Premiership, and once the injuries started coming he was never able to string together enough good performances.

I was glad when he came back, but his lack of pace meant that he seemed to get frustrated when unable to beat players that he thought he was better than.

The last few games he played for us were hard to watch, he missed some great chances, and Pressley was right to move him on. The way Pressley did it though was not the right way to treat a long serving player.

Mick Kearns. Played in every division for us. Bottom to top. With us for about 15. Also youth coach at one point.
Peter Hill also. Also our trainer/physio for many years.

He wasn't great when he came back yet wasn't as bad as some made out.

I didn't feel sorry for him when he was let go. It was the right decision.

Hopefully Wilson will do much better than Shef!
At least he dropped a division rather than hang on with City.
Whether pushed or jumped is questionable?
Otherwise, he would have been first player to play for City in all four divisions, but in the wrong direction!
He was past it when he rejoined!
