Really don't get the hate.

He had a slow start to the season (and certainly wasn't alone in that), but generally I think he's excellent.

It was rumoured last year that some PL teams were looking at him.

Someone on here said the other day he wouldn't stand out in a League 2 team ffs!

Criticism is not hate . In my opinion I think he's a very average player.

He is a more than adequate championship midfielder
What those that claim he's no better than LG 1 are watching it beyond me

His stats seem decent but I’m still yet to be convinced that he affects games enough going forward for what his numbers say. I think he’s a good player to have in the squad but he still needs to be more confident and forward thinking to be classed as a championship great imo.

Maybe with a bit more experience and better players around him he’ll be better. I think maybe the fact the rest of the midfield and attackers have been so poor recently hasn’t helped, we need players like him to step up and make things happen in order to win games when our play is so lacklustre.

I think a number of people watch him with blinkers on , confirmation bias
I said he's shite so I must be right even though the stats and performances would suggest just the opposite

He has been guilty of not being progressive enough with his passing in previous seasons . This season he has been consistently looking for a forward pass and to get us on the front foot . Some of the moment in front of him at times has been very ordinary however .

I think Eccles is an ok Championship level hardworking, no frills midfielder who doesn't hide, gets tackles in, breaks up play and does simple passing. He cant thread a ball through or run and break the line.
I don't mind him. The problem is we need another 2 midfielders to join him who have more ability going forward.

It is funny that some of those who criticise Eccles for "playing sideways & backwards" are lauding the possibility of signing Matty James.

Eccles issue is he’s decent at a few things and not outstanding at anything. You never sit back in appreciation of a stunning pass or how he’s got himself out of trouble and got us up the pitch. He doesn’t score screamers, doesn’t beat a man, but does everything else as well as any other CM at this level.

I’ll always advocate for a Ciry fan in the team, I think it gives something special. I just don’t think he’s what we need when Sheaf is out. When Sheaf is back Is have him ahead of Torp on current form though.

Never more evident than Saturday when him and Torp were having to carry the ball foward more because of lack of movement up front.

Eccles is a good player. Solid championship stock. Our squad situation however means that he is absolutely pivotal for us now.

Can I ask do you see the entire game or just extended highlights?
In the game on Saturday he was one of our few successes. Watching on tv you don't see work done off the ball of which him and Torp got through a hell of a lot due to the way the team was wrongly set up particularly in the 2nd half.

I mean, when you say “never” I’m confident that I/we all have seen him play both stunning passes and do things that have got us out of trouble/ had moments of brilliance.
He’s not Kasey Palmer but then seemingly most wouldn’t want him to be that either.

Bear with me on This its a bit of a leap but did you ever see Didier Deschamps play? He was known as the ‘Water Carrier’. His job was to break up play and start attacks. Remind you of anyone?
I think we’ve seen flashes of the ‘moments’ from Eccles but it’s just not his job.

I don’t think he does the simple stuff well enough or has good enough game intelligence to be a Deschamps style water carrier. I think he’s a decent box to box midfielder that needs to believe in himself more and it’ll come. I thought his passing choices improved immeasurably against Norwich and he’s shown flashes of being able to spot and execute a pass. He needs to believe.

Fair enough, you might be right and he might develop into a more expansive player. I do think I’ve seen performances like the Norwich game before which I guess is why I don’t understand the criticism he gets.

Reading this forum you would think Eccles is a world beater and Torp has never seen a football in his life before. Neither is true. Eccles is OK, but he constantly gives the ball away, misplaces passes. I feel pretty ambivalent towards him in all honesty.

With all those comparisons to Wharton, it does make you wonder why Wharton was picked up by Palace for a decent fee and yet there’s seemingly not been a single sniff of a transfer rumour for Eccles

(Don’t hate him, don’t want him to leave, just think he’s overhyped.)

Shipley and Eccles is night and day. Great left foot, but Shipley was only good if there were at least a 10 yard radius of space around him with no pressure.

We'll have to agree to disagree. If Eccles could find a team mate with the ball occasionally I would be more convinced.

Isn’t his passing accuracy pretty high for a centre mid in this division though (genuine question for the stattos)?

It's decent for short and mid length passes, but his overall completion rate is let down by a poor figure for long passes.

His short passing is better than Sheaf's.
