Ipswich's January home cup defeat by Maidstone left them free to get the maximum out of their squad in the league. With no distractions they've over performed and are now within a point of the PL.

Our January home defeat last year against Wrexham worked in the same way for us. With no distractions a very average squad put together a run of great results that took us to the PO final.

Fuck the cup next season, take an embarrassing 3rd round defeat if necessary and focus on what really matters.

You must be psychic. Opened the forum with the intention of starting a thread saying exactly this. Fuck both the cups.

I'd prefer to have a bit more squad depth. The season had started to decline anyway.

Early cup exits and more squad depth aren’t mutually exclusive. A bigger squad means more heads would have been turned in anticipation of a cup semi final at Wembley - the start of the decline.

Plus, of course, Robins would actually have to use the larger pool of players at his disposal.

No thanks. The Wolves game was up there with Middlesbrough in the play offs and United was the best trip I've had to Wembley.

Even Maidstone, Oxford and the replay against Wednesday was fun.

It's an easy excuse to blame the cup.

Robins went for the easy excuse then, that‘s unlike him.

Ipswich have been in the top 3 all season. Their form since January has very little to do with losing to Maidstone.

In 20 years time those that were at Wembley for the Semi will still remember it. They won’t remember the season we came 7th.

They would have remembered the season we got promoted though - had that been the case.

So, thanks for the memory. Now concentrate on the league going forward.

You can’t possibly say how their league performance would have been affected by the diversion of a match at Wembley.

Spot on. Many under 35 have waited all their life those two games.

You would have done anything 10 years ago to experience that. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

But all of those will have had many years in the top flight.

There's plenty of that generation who consider the game last week at Wembley one of their best ever.

Unfortunately people would. People were saying last month they'd prefer us to make the play offs than win the FA Cup. Truly baffling.

Perhaps wait and see where we are before writing it off completely. If We're near the top six I would agree and play the stiffs and risk embarrassment but if only mid table then go for it a bit more.

Absolutely. These conversations will be had with Doug I'm sure.

We will have had some financial gain from the cup run. Needs to be put into the playing squad.

The question Deity posed was would I have swopped the Wembley experience we had, not winning the cup. The odds against us doing so were enormous and many on here expressed relief that we won a moral victory against Man Utd without having to face the probability of humiliation by Man City in the final.

Some are talking like if we hadn’t had the cup run we’d have been promoted…looking at the the last few weeks/months, no chance. Too inconsistent and loose defensively (this wasn’t an area anyone would’ve brought in loans/signings in Jan either).

As a squad and a team this was always going to be a transitional year with another transfer window or two needed to get quality strength and depth and so it’s proved. It’s basically been a total squad rebuild. We’ve been top half/in the play off mix for a chunk of the season and had an FA Cup run that will live long in the memories. Just a shame that it’s petered out

Spoken to fans of a few other clubs who think we’ve had a great season and are jealous of what we’ve had

100% agree with this, the two competitions can complement each other and raise team spirit. We were making mistakes in early Jan and way back in September after exiting the league Cup early.

The Premier league isn't the holy grail many think it is, where as the Wolves and Man U games will be remember by all forever

When the third round draw was played, Ipswich were second, we were 8th.

They're still second, and we're now 9th.

These are professionals and should be able to cope with a lot of game time, the real reason for this is down to our depth in squad… look at Ipswich last night, they have reliable quality on the bench, we unfortunately do not have this. It is all about a bigger squad not game time

Make the play offs or play off final? Even bigger difference is then going up!! Cup run was great, if we had lost in the 3rd or 4th round, may still have missed the playoffs. I’m glad I have the memories of wolves and Man U.

One thing the cup run showed besides a great victory against Wolves and a great Cup Final v Manchester United. Was how much it took out of the players, similar with a victory over Leeds.

It shows we are a long way off being able to compete week in week out with Premier League standards. It is not just squad size but the depth of quality needed.

We are several seasons away from promotion in my opinion. So let's enjoy what we have, league games, cup games, just enjoy the journey. Wembley was very special for me last season and this season along with 87!
