This was a surprise really
Doyler was playing with a niggly knee injury which reduced his mobility so it was understandable when he was dropped
But equally understandable that he would listen to an offer for a final fanfare of playing
Especially at a club where he probably won't need to move house

I do wish him the best and after his performances last season and the leadership qualities he brought to the team I do hope one day we will see him back in a coaching capacity. Not sure i can see him as manager - I mean, I don’t want to be that bloke who sings ‘Michaels doyle’s sky blue army’ from the terraces

Bit of a surprise but to replace with Meyler seems good for us, and good for Doyle to keep playing. We'll see him back in a coaching capacity at some point I reckon.

We've lost an Irish terrier but replaced him with one who's bigger and nearly a decade younger. Even if it's only on loan that has to be seen as an upgrade I reckon. Just hope he can do the organising and getting in the ref's ear as well.

Makes sense really. Robins said he had to move people out to bring others in. Doyle must have been on a decent wedge so works all round, free up the money and he gets to play which didn't seem like it was going to happen anytime soon here.

Sad to see him go from a sentimental perspective, but from a practical and football one it makes sense. He’s far down the pecking order, he’s not been good enough this year and he’s one of the higher earners.

Absolutely wish him the best of luck and I really hope to see him back as a coach. One of the best leaders I’ve seen at the club.

He’ll be missed.

Used to like them and my family on my dad's side have all been County supporters since the club was first formed, but went off then greatly through their chairman and Kevin Nolan.

Maybe all is forgiven again now though.

did well for us last season... and a bit gutted to see him go, as it means we cant sing the doyle & kelly song anymore this season!!

However, Robins final line in his transfer interview is very telling ""I look forward to working with him again in the future in a coaching capacity at the Club." I think thats a done deal.. get yourself over to notts for the rest of this season mate & free up some money for us to get a couple lads through the door here, and we will see you next season as assistant coach. As good old Arnie used to say "I'll be back"

I think this season has been a bit harsh on Michael Doyle. He hasn't once played alongside Kelly, and it has left him exposed alongside Bayliss, or someone else less defensively minded. So it's hard to tell if it is in fact that League 1 is too much of a step up at his age, or if it's just case that he doesn't have the legs to play the holding position on his own, as even last season I think he would have struggled to do that in League 2.

Did the people ghosting past him every time or him not being able to get close enough to kick people not tell you?

You can't play another defensive midfielder just to look after him.

I like Doyle and he has been a good servant at the club. We will miss his game management and influence both on and off pitch. I’m sure he will do well at Notts and hope to see him back here for his first coaching role.

We did last season, and it seemed to work.

His legs have been 'gone' for a good few years, but in the right tactics he, as last season proves, can be effective.

Mistake, Doyler still had a lot to offer on and off the pitch going forward and has history and local family ties.
He would have been an asset to the club longer than Robbo and Vivesh are going to be.

Sad to see him go. Hope he comes back as a coach. Fair play if he just accepts he’s not up to L1 standard any more and just wants a last hurrah before retirement.

Robins last sentence gave a bit away about the plan for him.

He wasn't going to play for us this season.

He couldn't get close, because he was covering a much larger amount of ground this season, he hasn't had the legs to play like that for about 4 years - ask Portsmouth fans. Last season, tactically, we were very compact, and Doyle was able to be use his positioning, closing down and leadership skills to influence the game. This season, we are more expansive, and without Kelly next to him, Doyle hasn't got the legs to play in this system. And he wouldn't have last season either.

Last season he was a success, this year he is 'past it' or 'it's too much of a step up', but he still has the same attributes this season, we are just not playing to his strengths, and have exposed him in the middle.
