Are Notts County throwing money at a chance of Survival? Seen they have signed Mackail Smith, a centre half and maybe Doyle.

He was kicking a ball about with Chaplin earlier at Moat House School. He wouldn't have been doing that if he had an inkling about this? He loves CCFC.

Notts isn't that far away.

Apparently they have been trying to get him for a month.

Been a first team regular all his life, hard habit to kick I’d imagine sitting watching on a Saturday.

I don’t blame him

Confirmed

"I look forward to working with him again in the future in a coaching capacity at the Club."

Looks like that's going to happen after he finishes playing.

All the best skipper!!

Coventry City can confirm that Captain Michael Doyle has left the Club to join League Two side Notts County.

The Midfielder made a total of 373 appearances for the Sky Blues, in two spells from 2003 to 2011 and from 2017 to the current day, putting him 7th in the all-time record appearance list alongside other club legends.

After re-joining the club from Portsmouth in Summer 2017, the 37-year-old Irishman played an integral role as he captained the Sky Blues to promotion from League Two last season.

Doyle made 76 appearances, scoring four times, in his second spell with the Sky Blues.

Manager Mark Robins paid tribute to the departing Doyle.

“Michael has been a key player for us since he re-joined the club in 2017.

“He has been a great example for our squad both on and off the field, was a huge part in our promotion to League One last season and an asset to the club as a whole.

“Michael has not featured for us in the last few months and at Michael’s stage of his career, he is understandably keen to play regular football and that opportunity has arisen at Notts County for him.

“On behalf of Coventry City Football Club, I would like to thank Michael for his contribution to the club over many years and wish him all the best for his future career.

"I look forward to working with him again in the future in a coaching capacity at the Club."

well I wish him well - he was absolutely vital to the team and club last season.. I notice Robins says he looks forward to perhaps working with him in any coaching role at the club? to be fair thats a very positive comment from the manager.

Owner did say that although the club was up for sale he would still be spunking cash on people so fair play I guess...

Made me feel sad, and I'm a grown man. Have him back as a coach/manager whatever.

Robins saw him as a key player at the start of the season but it became fairly apparent that he's not quite good enough at this level anymore, gave away a couple of goals too.

Still love the guy though!

Exactly, probably some decent money and a chance to be a hero if they stay up while seeing his days out.

It isn't too far away either like Portsmouth was.

To be fair I think the step up has been a tough one for Doyle, which isn't really a surprise at his age. Still very capable of doing a job for Notts County, and did a good job for us last season.

I am sure that this deal suits all parties but I can't help feeling that this decision is a game changer.
In 16/17 we lacked any leadership and sank like a stone.
Doyle provides,if nothing else, leadership and I hope that I am wrong but Robins may come to regret this move.

Can we rename this thread captain, leader, legend!

To reiterate my comments earlier....... good on him as it shows his desire to play every Saturday and not quite ready to step into coaching. His time in L1 might be at a close but in L2 he’s a lot to offer weekly.

Cannot fault that, came to do what he was instrumental in achieving.

Gave me a enjoyable season from Grimsby to Nottingham to a day in the capital.

Leading voice on the pitch and instrumental in getting Sparky and others to sign as well as his own contribution . The way others in the dressing room spoke of him tells you what a top pro he was at all times. Personally think it's a mistake but I guess time will tell

He was excellent for us last year, struggled a little for us this year. Nice to see Robins positive comments about him coming back as a coach, as he clearly enjoys being here, and spoke of his desire to help the club improve relations between the fans and players further. IE the quiz night, becoming a tradition and being hosted by the club skipper for many a year.

Well done Rob in bringing the unfortunate news.

Feels like a loss but that’s nostalgia from last year.
