Emc and saka as wingbacks is exciting attacking prospect albeit unlikely to work perhaps

Not saying the entire team should be built around him. Just thinking long term it's more likely we'll work with what we have rather than signing players to fit 352 again. We'd certainly need another CB, another RWB and another LWB and are successful teams utilising this formation at the minute?

EMC is £4m worth of talent - difficult for a club like ours to ignore for too long.

Too many people seem to be reading too much into everything. Robins seems to have a habit of holding back new players. Look at last season. We had strikers nit getting much game time and Godden as our main striker. But as the season progressed our new strikers came in and proved the doubters wrong.

Last game EMC was getting in the right place at the right time in the small amount of time he got and was unlucky not to score.

I'm trying to think of the last we signed a new player that wasn't written off by many.

Man the recruitment team must hate the Robins tactic shift .

So in my opinion I do think it doesn’t change targets only as:

Milan is our only natural RWB. While Eccles can play there he’s doing great in DM. As such this would be one target.

We have four Centrebacks for three roles. This is personal preference but feel an experienced CB to control the middle would be a target as feel we lack experience in our defence.

In DM since torp has been placed as a ten we only have three players. As such I would want to see one understudy for Sheaf (this could wait until the summer tho) and one experienced box to box CM.

I think all other roles are well covered and imagine Brad would be off to help make way for numbers

Saka wasn’t great when he played RWB last season. He was the biggest beneficiary to the formation change

What information?

Summer 2023 we built a squad to play 532 (or however you want to characterise our 5 back), then spent most of the season playing 433. This summer we built a squad for 433 and are now finding form in a 532 again.

You're confusing an agenda with an opinion.

I mean we only signed EMC this summer who naturally doesn’t fit into a 352 right?

Not convinced we'll play 3 CBs all the time. Game to game or within a game I expect we'll change it. MR made a change to stop the bleeding. Don't think we need to read too much into it. You want us to be effective and have depth however we line up.

Once we are fully confident as a squad and have climbed up the league I think there will be games we go back to a back four , especially when Bidwell is fit again

He has played as a 10 in the past but would wait till he gets more accustomed to the league before trying him there

Glad to see the back of 4-3-3 to be honest. We have 4 CF's who are all decent. We now know, Haji needs to be played down the middle.

Sakamoto can play AM, with aplomb..

As for Mason-Clark and Rodrigues,. Excellent choices for when we do switch formation in games, or if we need to push the WBs forward.

CM still the prime position in Jan. Thereafter, CB and RWB.

Just a CM and CB. CM the priority as we are very much relying on Sheaf and Eccles playing every game at the moment

You don't know Rodrigues is an excellent choice yet seeing as he's not even played a game

Wonder who the targets are as think we have at least one lined up by.

I remember the Peru RWB. Wonder how he has gone on as imagine that’s one we’ll be back in for.

CM is the hard one imo as don’t really want to push Eccles out but need someone good enough to cover Sheaf. Billing hasn’t played many matches but just can’t that one due to wages (unless Bournemouth were going to cover a high amount of wages).

If we’re not as hard pressed against loans Tyler Morton could be a shout as reports say Liverpool are happy to send him out.

CB I’ve got no idea on. Wouldn’t of minded Santos from Bolton but understand it’s a league one player. Maybe Harry Darling or Ben Cabango from Swansea since there out of contract

I don't think we are going to bring in a ton in January tbh. I see more loans than anything. Probably wrong mind haha.

He looked good against Middlesborough and it looks like we may try playing 3-4-3 at points because the personnel is there for it.

3-4-1-2 provides good balance and Torp played well. Defensively good, linked well with WBs and strikers, and underrated performance and deserves another start.

In relation to the topic of the thread, nothing change’s significantly recruitment wise. CM is still the main target and this latest link confirms that we’re aiming high for that player. From there, you’re still looking at adding some experience and another CB makes sense here. For a final signing, a LWB could be a good idea if 3-4-1-2 is to stay, this won’t happen until the summer imo when we let Bidwell go at the end of his deal.

Ideally we’d be good enough to have a few formations that work within our style of play and the wingers get used when we feel like we need to go wide.

Whatever we do I’ll echo that CM is still priority.

On Saturday we played a lopsided 3-5-2 where MvE was more of a RB and Rudoni was more of a LM. Binks constantly came across to cover the LB space and Eccles to cover the RM space.

People are worried about the wingers but they showed where they are likely to play. EMC can cover Rudoni (against weaker sides and when chasing games) & Wright and Saka will rotate with Torp in the 10.

If it is 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 the targets remain the same: CM, RB, CB

CB, CM, LB, RB.

Quality players not square pegs in round holes.

For their best positions at the moment we have
GK - Dovin, Wilson, Collins
RB(/WB) - van Ewijk
CB (Rf) - Thomas, Latibeaudiere
CB (Lf) - Kitching, Binks
LB(/WB) - Bidwell, Dasilva (Rudoni)
CM - Sheaf, Eccles, Rudoni (torp)
CAM - Torp (Sakamoto)
RW - Sakamoto, Rafael
LW - (Haji) EMC
ST - Haji, Simms, Asante, Bassette

This highlights the need for a RB/RWB, CB and a CM, as Rudi, EMC and Rafa can be tried in CAM if needed and if we go back to 433 we have enough depth in attack and LB

But the only reason you'd have for changing it is if this stopped working.

If you've got a formation that is getting you results, if you mess with it then you could end up losing that cohesion and momentum.

If you've got something that's working and choose to change it to something that wasn't working before, if it doesn't end up working again then you open yourself up to all sorts of criticism.

I'd be happy with loans for CM and CB in Jan. Squad seems to be packed with talent and we should only spend money if the right deal arises. We're in a fortunate position of having depth and not needing panic signings.

Traditionally prices are always inflated in Jan so would rather we didn't break the bank above what's needed.

Not a suggestion really but I watched* FGR v Stoke U21s tonight. Stoke had a lad called Emre Tezgel who looks the real deal. Scored all 4 goals.

Just wanted it on record somewhere on here so that if we sign him one day in the future I can say I told you so (actually posted on gmk that we should sign Leon Best after seeing him destroy FGR for saint youth)

* I say watched... this was my view for long periods of the game:

People are far too hung up on the fees for EMC & Kitching.

Robins' job is to make sure we get as many points as possible. Should he drop Kitching for Lati because he cost £5m? If he plays EMC does he drop Wright, Simms, BTA, or Rudoni - who will then become the £X worth of talent our club is ignoring?

Recruiting players is like placing bets or buying stocks. Not every one is going to be a return on your investment, but if you get more right than wrong you will collectively come out on top.

We've paid a decent fee for 10+ players for around £40m. Think Doug will be happy enough if we can sell them for £60m - even if EMC & Kitching leave on a free.

EMC will come good, and time is a luxury we can actually afford to give him with the strength in depth we have in attack, reduced to cameos building his confidence and cohesiveness with the team and slowly build him up. Its something we’ve not had the luxury of before and its nice to say we do now
