9,000 At The Ricoh I Dont Think So !!!
Sun 08th Jan 2012 18:50
There were never 9,000 for the visit of Saints to the Ricoh Arena.

Football grounds have always been a passion of mine and after 40 years of ground watching Im usually fairly acurate and predicting just how many are in a sstadium, thats why iwas gobsmacked when the crowd for the Saints V Coventry game was given as 9,000, the first alarm bell was that the attendance was exactly that 9,000 on the nose, when do you ever see that, once in a blue moon is the answer, this seemed to smack of Coventry City trying to give the impression that the much publicised fans boycott was a failure.

The empty stands however told a different story, the visitors section looked the most densly packed area of the stadium and according to the official figures we had 1,734, which i think was about right, to our left the big side had the most home fans probably when all told and being generous probably about 500 more than our section, the far end had a smattering maybe 300 at best and the main stand as such probably had around 800, allowing for a few hundred either way, either way barely 5,000 and certainly no more than 6k.

Thats why I was so shocked at the official attendance, sat watching what for 70 minutes was the most lacklustre competitive game i have ever seen Saints play both on and off the pitch I had plenty of time to contemplate the crowd and to be honest you could have fitted everyone into one end of the ground with ease, given that the record crowd is 31k or so I would say at best each end held 7-8 k so there was no way there were nine thousand present.

Why would sisu pay more to C and E than is necessary. Remember most lloyds stand is corporate so they count if there or not.

not for cup games. The tickets are an additional purchase and cant be counted unless purchased for that game.

When John Poynton was chairman i saw some amazing attendance figures.
Remember being crushed on the Kop without a spare seat going in Highfield Rd against Arsenal & amazingly there was only about 19000 there!

Am I the only person who thought there was about 10,000 there yesterday? I need my eyes tested! I was sat in the Telegraph stand by the way.

I think it's about right. Where I sit there is never usually anyone in front of me, yet there were a few extra. It had the feel that a few had come up for the cup that arnt season ticket holders.

Are you seriously suggesting that SISU would post a higher than actual gate, simply to "get one over", the protesters? knowing that they would have to pay tax on that higher gate?

Didn't go in so can't really comment on what the numbers looked like but I guess with Southampton getting 45% of the gate they wouldn't pay a penny out more than they have to!

I've seen some bizarre theories on here but this one actually does hold water and not so delusional.

Exactly, and by saying a neat round figure they can say to the taxman that it was an "approximate" figure! Jesus, it's not like we have access to their dialogue with the taxman. Simple PR to try and limit the perceived success of the protest. It's BLATANTLY OBVIOUS, people!

Don't know if the rules have changed since I left Blighty, but it used to be for the FA Cup games, the home team got 66% of the 'gate' money, the away team the remaining 33%. If this is still the case, why would they inflate the 'gate' ....to pay more to Southampton? It is based on tickets sold, not physical attendance. Thems the rules....I believe!

The income is audited. Advertised attendance is irrelevant.

Common sense in football? Not since the advent of Sky or the creation of the Premier League.

I think now that both teams get 45% and the FA gets 10%. Thus SISU would have had to give away 55% of the income from the gate anyway.

Somebody earlier in the thread said about the Blackburn game being announced as 22,000. I was there and I agree, there must have been at least 27,000 there. Probably the best atmosphere I've experienced at the Ricoh.

I thought the gate was about right. The centre blocks in the Tesco stand were pretty full - more than they are for a league game. As for the gate being exactly 9000 - it is possible you know - it is a number like any other! PUSB
