No one is going to stick to fiscal rules. It’s political theatre on both sides. Sticking to them means nothing but a soundbite to stop people asking about “where’s the money coming from” endlessly for every policy announcement (which Labour have to do but the Tories don’t).
This is a tale as old as time and what Labour need to do to get elected in this country: promise not to raise taxes, promise not to spend money, promise not to allow benefit scrounging. Because that’s the median view of what Labour do. So you focus on the reasons people aren’t voting for you. And so far it’s looking like working at getting a record landslide victory.
