Basically we’re going to have to inhale an extra 5 years of petrol and diesel fumes in our lifetimes, clearly promoting the continuing fall in life expectancy while making sure we’re a bigger burden on the NHS in the process for everything from respiratory illnesses to cancer. He’s cancelled a load of conspiracy theories that don’t exist, hence their conspiracy theories. Turned off at that point.

He’s pushing back the new ICE car ban? He knows Labour will put it back. Just silly politics that creates uncertainty for business. They really don’t give a fuck any more, it’s all riling up the base and leaving traps for Labour. I hope they go full Tories in 2010 when they get in and break all the conventions about not saying what a state the previous lot have left things.

it’s a gimmick Tony as most cycle plans are developed so far in advance - and the PHEV vehicles carry on till then anyway

What’s the EU plans? Are they aligned? If so surely it’s happening whatever we think.

Well ironically from what I see Boris Johnson sped up the move here and Europe and the Far East are 2035 - Japan definitely is - so it seems we are just falling back in line with the EU

Amazing! So the UK is aligning itself with EU policy by extending the deadline to 2035.

Wonder how Farage (rhymes with garage) will spin this one?

Labour said they will build hs2 in full last week. The guy on the politics show now doesn’t seem convincing they will build it at all

Minister refuses to confirm HS2 will run to Manchester - as Labour promises to build it 'in full'

Labour has clarified it will build HS2 "in full" if it wins the next election - after a government minister refused to be drawn on reports the line to Manchester is due to be scrapped.

I don't think there is a respectable expert who I dislike more than Paul Johnson from the IFS

Fixing potholes by keeping huge amounts of freight on the road. Genius.

I find once you realise that literally all policy from the govt from now until they finally give in to electoral gravity and go are just about pumping the base in the hopes of sticking around post GE and setting traps for Labour, it makes more sense. None of it is intended to be what’s best for the country.

All they care about is winning and if not this election the next one, so we get oil and gas licences that Labour can’t cancel or they’re unstable for business, and can’t keep because they’re bad environmentally. And that’s all that matters.

HS2, punt it all to Labour so you can moan about costs. Make a ridiculous decision on Euston that will almost certainly have to be overturned so you can claim Labour are wasting money.

Make up completely fictional economic forecasts so when Labour can’t meet them claim they’re overspending.

He’s talking about reforming the exam system! He’s as dead a duck as they come with a year of his premiership left at most. It’s just entirely unserious.

Oh yeah, potholes and bins / bin collections are all the type of relatively immaterial issues that get the home counties riled instead of collapsing public services and buildings, regressions in the average life expectancy, widespread poverty

Anyone who thought Hs2 wasn't going to end up this way is living in cloud cuckoo land.

It's just typical of big infrastructure in this country, a fucking shambles.

If its going to go ahead we need to build the lot, all phases as originally planned.

If for no other reason than it would have been far cheaper per mile and then the political pressure from London would have ensured the last leg got done.

That would have been better, but even better than that would have been to kill the fecking thing from the start.

The whole cost/benefit analysis used to justify HS2 was the biggest crock of shit ever. It was literally fictional.

I'm all for spending money on infrastructure to stimulate the economy and create jobs, but this was a rubbish project to blow it all on...

My plan would start by not literally making up the numbers to justify a vast white elephant that sucked the the juice out of every other potential project, and I'd take it from there.

I assume from your response you disagree, so which bit of the article specifically do you dispute?

Firstly carbon costs, I think George was being very pessimistic as to whether we decarbonise the electricity supply. Also not really the point.

Secondly the disbelief in fairly standard practice for calculating economic benefits of infrastructure.

Thirdly “don’t people travel enough?” No George, they don’t.

It’s just standard anti-growth guff TBH. We have a shameful transport system compared to our peers that’s the long and the short of it. And it drives up house prices and costs in productivity.

So unless you or George has a magic second option for solving the capacity issues on our Victorian network I’ll stick with the one we’re halfway through.

It should if the intention was ever to build a HS2 to the north. But it was intended to connect BHX to London and increase London's air passenger capacity. Though if it doesn't go into central London it's farce. When they proposed it and it didn't connect up to St Pancras and access to European HSR, then I wondered what the point was.

As for infrastructure spending in general, for me it should be used as a regeneration tool. As it is all the big infrastructure goes to the already successful places and just results in increases migration from deprived areas and needing money to sort of the increasing social problems in those areas with the double whammy of higher property and living costs in the areas that people move to so even those that try to get out get caught in the trap.

I'm amazed at how little joined-up thinking goes on in the corridors of power. Though I guess the 'joined-up' in that sentence may be redundant.
