that's pretty much where I'm at tbh. Wasn't expecting Starmer to be far left or anything like that but other than getting the current lot out don't really see any reason to vote Labour under his leadership.

they'll get in this time but I'm not convinced by the the idea this is all just so he gets in and then we'll see left wing policies being enacted. think on current form there's every danger the tories regroup and we only have Labour in for one term

Unfortunately, it’s probably inevitable.

Only because it'll be impossible to fix the mess that 15 years of Tory government has left us with in one term, and the right wing press will take great glee in telling everyone it's all Labour's fault. And the thick will lap it up.

The same thick people who voted for a labour government in 3 successive general elections I suppose

Above all else it’ll be because the Tories are very effective at winning elections. I’ve always maintained that the next election will be a hung parliament and nothing has changed my mind on that.

Would need either a monumental turnaround in peoples personal finances or a monumental fuck up by Labour

A more competent leader would easily win a majority. I’d probably make the effort to vote myself it there was.

Was listening to a guy from the spectator and even they were saying they can't see anyway back for the Tories. At the moment unless something massively changes just not being the Tories is going to be enough it seems.

He's currently predicted to lead Labour to a huge majority.

As @CCFCSteve says it would need a monumental fuck up for him not to get a majority.

There’s no sign it’s going to be anything but a stinking majority TBF.

I think people have realised that 'stopping the boats' isn't going to improve their lives and the 'war on woke' isn't going to put food on their table. These vacuous approaches aren't going to do it at the election, although they will of course have most of the media in their side.

Labour are deeply uninspiring but the alternative of more of what we have had can't hold any appeal for the vast majority of people surely.

It's a big majority though, and they don't turn over easily. I mean, Labour won their third term despite having a rather ropey %age as much because the swing wwas near impossible.

Of course the Lib Dems were also rather more use in blocking %age shares back then...

44 so far set to stand down at the next election. Now *that's* a pretty big reason why Tories will lose too, as it's far harder to win if you're not the established MP, so otherwise safe seats will turn over on that alone.

This is another resignation as an MP with immediate effect. 3 by-elections now confirmed and more expected as the Boris cult MP’s fall on Boris’ sword for him. Allegedly they’re going to draw them out over a period of time to create maximum damage to Sunak. He may as well call a GE now. The longer this goes on the worse it will get for him. He’s lost the party.

Not sure how the Tories select their candidates but I would think that he’s now lost the opportunity to stand as a candidate for the Tories at the next GE, whenever that might be. At least while Sunak is leader. Only way I can see him doing it is by standing as an independent (which would mean resigning from the Tory party I would think), getting elected as an independent, the Tories lose the GE and he then rejoins the Tories ahead of a leadership election. You wouldn’t rule it out but I’m not sure how likely that is.

Can’t help but feel if he intends to stay in politics it will be with a brand new party of his own creation.

He didn't have much of a majority for the seat anyway did he could have easily lost it at the next election?

There’s some suggestions that Boris has a total of six allies willing to fall on his sword and resign as MP’s to trigger by elections in the hope that others will follow bringing down Sunak. Although The Times is reporting it’s already falling flat and allies are abandoning him. So maybe that’s it for the resignations in “honour” of Boris.

There was always talk while he was PM of moving seats at the next GE for that very reason. On the presumption that he’d still be PM at the next GE of course.

Rumours some of the 1922 committee are really pissed off with him and they were some of his biggest backers so not good for him if true

Sticks in my throat to say it, but the comparisons to Thatcher are harsh on her - that's how bad he is!

I mean the ridiculous thing is that Johnson isn't small state ideologically... well, until he thinks it'll win him a few votes from extremist cronies, anyway.

He’s just become so tedious. The majority of the country see him for what he is now and not all the 1922 lot are ignorant to that fact. The truth has caught up with him, it’s as simple as that. A lot has changed, even in the last 24 hours. Even yesterday I thought there was a chance that this could bring Sunak down and trigger a GE. Having read the headlines this morning there doesn’t seem to be any fight from the Pro Boris press other than playing the victim.

Agree. One did what they thought was best for the country (rightly or wrongly). The other has only said and done what was best for themselves.

How some of the right wing nutters support him I’ll never know. It literally doesn’t make sense as their true beliefs aren’t really aligned, they just believe his words not actions. Cult like is the only way to describe it.

Police release Nicola Sturgeon without charge

Ms Sturgeon says she is "innocent of any wrongdoing" after being released while more inquiries are carried out.
www.bbc.co.uk

Third person to be arrested and released without charge. Something starting to seem a bit off with this but not sure what

Thatcher is almost the complete opposite to Johnson. She did genuinely want to improve the country and worked hard to do so, but she absolutely believed in a completely insane way to do it.

Boris is a chancer after whatever he can get for himself for as little effort as possible and will say whatever he thinks people want to hear to get what he wants.
