I've heard also that it's not going to make it into central London, cost/ability to do tunnels/bridges, so people will have to get off the superfast HS2 and take a normal train the last 15/20 minutes. Sort of defeats the objective of high speed

It’s already a frightening amount over budget and behind schedule, having destroyed local countrysides in the process and devalued people’s homes. Then it won’t actually stop in London at a high speed terminus. And it’s really about getting to London faster anyway.

Would much rather have seen that same money put into improving local transport all over the U.K. outwith Greater London.

Why are you bothered about somebody's house being devalued? They are compensated for it.

Who says it should be instead of investment in local transport?

Its original idea was to connect the North network more efficiently - northern railway services are a joke given the population density

I have no doubt there’s enthusiastic teachers taking it too far, or inappropriate guests being occasionally booked. But in the grand scheme of things it’ll be tiny tiny numbers. It’ll just end up generating a load of guidance and training materials for after school CPD and not change the fact most sex education is delivered by bored and/or awkward form tutors.

More and more school are now looking for external companies to deliver RSE for this reason, as they are trained professionals in this area. And these will all be regulated and subject to OFSTED and Safeguarding authorities.

There is a certain irony of course in listening to Tory MP’s bemoan what is being taught, one of the biggest components is about consent… an area a few Tory MP’s would do well to go back over.

The idea behind it is to release capacity on the west coast main line to provide for higher frequency local services, the WCML is currently effectively blocked up by having London bound fast intercity trains going up and down it multiple times per hour.

The Northern bit was supposedly the bit needed most, so why the hell they started by building the Southern bit, God only knows.

Not exactly levelling up.

We all know why really. No way are MP's going to put London on the bottom of the list.

It should have started at the north and worked it's way south. History has shown with canals, railways, motorways, and even internet that major infrastructure projects have a massive impact on the fortunes of places. If the intention is to level up you put the places in most need first.

It's something I never understand. Govts and councils always saying that certain areas need regeneration but there is no way they can afford it. Use the infrastructure projects as the regeneration funds and kill two birds with one stone. Infrastructure gets built, rundown areas get regenerated through it.

Nah, it was to connect Birmingham Airport to Central London and increase London's air passenger capacity. The rest was just hot air to make it seem like they were doing it for the country as a whole

How strange - no one on this normally active thread is commenting on this? Very odd. Is the internet down?

Got to be honest, I was expecting FP to be finding out how Gary Lineker felt this morning.

The Mail and Express are gunning for Lineker on their front pages. Must be a slow news day, what with war, HS2, Raab bullying, failed government, extreme weather etc. Still, my kids have a snow day. Must be all them right wing snowflakes.

The majority of people are in Lineker's side.

So they're whipping up the minority of headbangers that will vote Tory no matter what, but are just alienating everyone else further.

But yeah, it's a good distraction from all the other shit.

1st there was no obvious bounce from the Windsor agreement and thus far no obvious bounce from the phoney culture war over immigration.

Yeah, pretty sure we calculate GDP a hit differently to others. I think I read that in Dec less kids were at school due to illness/parents pulling them out etc, this had a negative impact on GDP

Surely there should be a global standard to enable like for like comparisons

Let's destroy the free at the point of use healthcare system and make people instead use their disposable income on buying healthcare services, great news all round.
