We've both got BNP cookies on our devices now.

The shame.

How depressing, incidentally, that our workplaces are now official warm hubs for the area. How did it come to this?

Was having exactly this conversation with a friend of mine who relies on MIND.

He's really worried about funding for a centre he attends because it's warmer than his flat, and obviously doesn't cost him anything while he's there.

Suggests a ruthless career politician, who now he recognises he won't get the top gig wants out.

Shame really, not only for those reasons, but also because, even though his politics are pretty hateful, he seemed to be one of the few Tories with a brain!

What we need is Tories with a heart. They are in very short supply.

Unions have to by law do their ballots in the post. If we held all constituencies and local elections to that and the 50% turnout threshold plenty wouldn’t get elected.

Labour promise biggest ever transfer of powers

Sir Keir Starmer says sweeping constitutional change would free up £200m a year and restructure the economy.
www.bbc.co.uk

Here we go. Gordon Brown promised a raft of measures for Scotland to stay in the UK which was called Devo Max when Scotland was having their vote on Independence.

They were never delivered.

Let's see how many ideas are regurgitated now.

The problem with giving local councillors more powers is that they have to be at least a little bit competent.

Hard to argue that when those at higher levels are just as incompetent.

Exactly, I’d rather have incompetence spread around and able to do less damage than centralised. Might even get more people of quality into local politics and more voter engagement if it’s more than bins and potholes.

I honestly don't believe that either of the main parties wants PR.

It's fucking depressing.

Why would they? Turkeys voting for Christmas. I’d prefer AV myself, I’m not convinced splitting people up into ever smaller bubbles is what’s needed. And he’s never committed to it, even after the conference vote in September, so it’s not a surprise.

He’ll likely claim the new HoL will be PR and that’s enough.

Yeah, I'd take that. Local representation in the Commons allowing for strong(ish!) and decisive(ish!) government, a delaying / modifying chamber reflects national trends and minorities a little more.

Im not a fan of it TBH. I like the local aspect of MPs so I’ve got my MP, I don’t see the point of a regional one as well. Go the whole hog and have proper nation wide PR maybe, but both lack what I want from the HoL which is balance and expertise and not a mirror of the current national political mood. And if both elections happen at the same time then you’ll just end up with one party dominating both and no counterbalance.

That's what I was heading for in an upper chamber!

As for counterbalance, it'd be madness to hold it at the same time. What you maybe need is a bit like local authorities, where a set percentage of seats become up for election at staggered intervals.

I've only seen the headlines, so how do things like more local control over education work? I always thought that should be a national thing in terms of policy and strategy, but down to local areas to implement it. Is that about where they're heading, or in danger of a mish-mash of different plans across the country?

I too, haven't deep dived the proposals, but the minimum should be to get rid of cronies and clergy having a say in lawmaking for the rest of their lives/careers without democratic accountancy.

PR is the obvious way to go.

It won't be ideal to begin with, but it's absolutely the right thing to do.
