Worth noting as well, that part of Johnson's electoral success was similar to Blair's - he stole the opposition's ideals by going tax and spend, which meant that Labour had to move from a fairly progressive left policy to a more extreme one to differentiate themselves, and looked mildly unhinged as a result. If the new Tory leader moves right, it would allow Labour to re-occupy a centre-left ground that would probably be easier for some of our left friends on this board to get behind, without it being seen as bonkers by floating voters. Of course it then comes down to personality... which is where it gets rather flawed.

Best result for Starmer? Liz Truss somehow coming through to win? A Jeremy Hunt would be a disaster for him, if we're talking Sunak, Javid or Zahawi, how much inherent racism is there that would stop some people voting for them? I'd like to think not much, but it's never really been tested.

Of them, Sunak too was fined, so that gives an open wound when going to the public. Zahawi has just shown mentalist judgement, but has also shown an uncanny ability to climb the greasy pole. Javid comes across as sincere and proper Tory, with a background that's less Eton to appeal to masses, but his resignation speech showed he's no great orator.

Raab seems to be being knocked out early, Gove would be too wild after a Johnson time... could actually be quite an open contest tbf. No obvious favourite just atm.

The more I’m hearing the more I’m thinking this is far from over. This is going to rip the Tories further apart. It doesn’t sound like there’s a consensus that he has to go now, plenty seem willing to let him stay on, loads of talk that’s just a Trojan horse to hold onto the leadership. Depends on what he says when he addresses the nation but if he does try to stay on this is going to get messier yet.

Shit brexit deal, hypocrite dealing with the lockdowns, employed a sex pest. Not before time this is.

Still can imagine him trying to cling onto power by doing some dodgy leadership contest which he puts himself forwards for.

Not amongst voters - couple of people phoning in on the radio phone in crying he is going and they are people who said they had never voted Tory before. Charisma at the top always works since Thatcher employed Saatchi - other than Kinnock vs Major - that Sheffield (?) rally scared people off him I think

I’d say only two of our prime ministers since the 80s could be said to have much charisma at all. Let’s not even get into the current leaders of Germany, Italy etc. Mastery of internal party politics seems to be the defining characteristic for a wannabe PM.

Well yes amongst voters, because they value it and end up electing twats. As you said yourself arguably the best PMs are the dull ones.

I’m not arguing that it doesn’t work.

It’s the fundamental issue with democracy: the only people cut throat enough to win power are the ones you don’t want having it.

The problem Brown faced was that after Blair, his USP was that he was a serious, intellectual, conviction politician. For whatever reason he let the PR people try and portray him as Blair-lite, which just made him look ridiculous.

No, but as a nation we need to drop this idea that politicians should be populists you can imagine having a pint with. Ends in disaster every time.

It’s being suggested that it’s his ego that wants him to stay on. He’s 28days short of Theresa May’s stint as PM.

A sad day. Thanks for the memories Boris.

Well done on getting Brexit done, you were fantastic through Covid and have led the world in our Ukraine efforts, not to mention keeping that antisemite out of No10.

It works in terms of getting into power but does untold harm to the country.

People need to look elsewhere for characters like film, sport, the theatre, not in politics.
