Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 just now discussing partygate with calls from listeners who lost love ones. Plays a George Ezra song with the refrain "Throw a party on the day I die"....

The producers of his show have form for the ironic/inappropriate. Not sure this is an oversight.

Sounds like there was a deliberate attempt to not assist Sue Grey. Sue Grey saying she was disappointed to only learn about some parties through reports in the press. Can’t help but feel that there’s still more parties to come out of the woodwork. Death by a thousand cuts for Boris. Can’t see this being the end of it.

Sue Grey has also uncovered clear evidence through emails that people were arranging these events. Did the Met prosecute anyone for arranging them? I remember people getting fined thousands for arranging events, unless I’ve missed it not seen that anyone has been fined for arranging events. Surely they must have been because apparently the Met aren’t bent.

I tend to agree!

tbf, nobody has *really* gone after him for that in the same way Johnson, which shows the wider context. And I'm still cynical enough to wonder if it was something Johnson said on his form that got Sunak the fine, along the lines of taking down a possible leadership rival.

Haha, I did wonder that myself !

Labour did call for Sunak to resign at the time which as I said felt a bit OTT and as you say, probably a bit premature with how things have panned out since

Johnsons crime sheet, one FPN or not, is a totally different matter

The organisers should’ve been fined £10k, doubt they have though

Boris has just claimed that breaking the law is a key part of leadership. Maybe if you’re Pablo Escobar but not the PM.

So the ABBA party wasn't looked at by Sue Gray because the Met were going to investigate it.

But then didn't.

And Gray decided not to either.

What a fucking whitewash.

tbf had Sunak gone, you'd have thought he'd have taken johnson with him at that stage. Guess that was worth a punt.

A man who was part of a society that bragged about burning £50 notes in front of homeless people is apparently appalled by the treatment of security and cleaning staff. Talk about road to Damascus conversions.

I really don't get this. The law was absolutely unambiguous and the people in charge of the Government were on television almost every night telling us how important it was to follow it.

The way to avoid a FPN isn't to use luck, it's to follow the law.

If Sunak or Johnson felt unfairly treated then they could have challenged the FPN. They didn't, so they've accepted that they broke the law.

The only question then is whether breaking the law, that you've said that it's so important that everyone else follows, is a resigning matter.

Labour says it is, and to his credit Starmer has said unequivocally that he would resign if he got an FPN. Why should we give Sunak a pass because he's been "unlucky"?

Good lord.

Johnson just said 'Sir Beer Korma' in the commons. Really? That's the kind of thing Grendel says on here, not what you expect from a supposed leader. Just embarrassing.

Also referred to 'Vladimir Corbyn' earlier. which seems a bit rich when you decide to call yourself Boris after a trip to Russia.

Someone has just made the point that work event or party is irrelevant. At the time they happened neither were allowed under the rules. The defence Boris seems to be using is that they were work events. It’s not really a defence at all.

Absolutely. I’ve never understood why that seems to be accepted as an excuse along with the “we’d been working extremely hard” line.

Top tip: Any time you get a laughing emoji from Grendel, you know you're onto a winner. Putting him on block was undoubtedly the single best thing I've ever done here, but it's great to know that he still reads my posts even though I can completely ignore his inane trolling.

Anyway, "Sir Beer Korma" and the occasional unfunny sneer is exactly the level of debate that Boris and his Tory lickspittles (Hi, G ) want to drag it down to; anything more complex exposes their fundamental lack of knowledge and decency.

Well the thing that amused me was the utter nonsense that suggested Johnson innocent should fight his FPN in a court of law and then in the same post said Starmer is a man of principal and would resign if having a FPN.

This is the same Mr Starmer whose done nothing wrong according to him and all his cabinet so oddly you’d assume he’d also fight the FPN

That’s it exactly. Drag it down to jokes and slurs because when the situation is indefensible that’s all you’ve got, isn’t it?

Shows they know they haven’t got a leg to stand on though and how completely lacking in decency they are. You wouldn’t trust them in any workplace but here they are running the country.

Exactly, that's the point!

If they can issue a fine for this how on earth can they not issue a fine for the leaving party that we saw yesterday? It's such blatant collusion.

It’s all very strange but if they were bent I’m sure they could’ve avoided issuing fines for that one pictured. I’d be livid if I was sunak as I think that was his only one…bit unlucky to say the least

A possible take on it is that they knew they couldn't get a way with not investigating or issue fines because they knew that would look undoubtedly like a cover-up and whitewash.

So instead, chose the least egregious breach and give fines for that, so thy can say "look we investigated and fined people, so it all been done properly" and so they can get away with the really bad ones. Then claim they're investigating stuff and then not doing it so it gets missed out of the report.

Even it's it's current context the Sue Gray report should be a damning indictment of the government. Then consider the fact that's she got a vested interest in not making the govt/Tories look too bad and that she apparently didn't even look into one of the worst incidents and imagine how bad it actually must have been.

As for Sunak, that was likely deliberate so he couldn't take any moral high ground to challenge for the leadership. This is all just a game to them.

Not sure that press conference helped. Telling people he did nothing wrong in saying goodbye to work colleagues while he banned you in law from saying goodbye to dying loved ones probably isn’t the look he should be going for right now.
