Just looking into the civil servant cuts and it doesn’t look like we’re taking back control of our borders after all. If you start at the beginning since the Tories came into power the civil service lost almost 300,000 staff reaching an all time low in 2016, which is the figure Boris wants to get back too. In 2016 it was estimated that we’d need an additional 50,000 civil servants to deal with brexit created red tape including 5000 additional customs officers. Now either that figure was grossly underestimated or we haven’t recruited enough civil servants for that specific need yet as part of the 90,000 civil servants recruited since 2016 as we once again delayed just the other week taking back control of our borders because as Rees-Mogg acknowledged in a road to Damascus conversion implementing Brexit is an exercise in self harm. So basically customs invested in the Brexit infrastructure (which they’re looking for the government to reimburse them for by the way as it’s lying empty and unused, I think the total figure was £470m) but has never been able to recruit enough people to fill the needed positions, there’s now a recruitment freeze in the civil service and the bodies that they have managed to recruit since 2016 are probably going to lose their job in this latest government initiative. So clearly we’re not taking back control of our borders. You watch that get quietly swept under the carpet on a good day to bury bad news day. Remember though kids, Boris got brexit done.

There was a documentary on the foreign office, think it was on the BBC, that covered Johnsons time and lets just say he didn't come out of it looking like someone you'd want to be reliant on or who you would consider a future PM.

Just when you think things can’t get any worse for Northern Ireland Boris is going to visit on Monday. Presumably to tell them a British PM can and will put a border in the Irish Sea and you can’t throw export documents in the bin.

I say worse they’re doing better than us. Maybe Boris thinks they’ll be grateful that he’s given them the best of both worlds.

I don't know why Sinn Fein and the IRA bothered to do what they did when Boris and the DUP have done far more for Irish unity than any nationalist

Our Prime Minister, the man who runs our country, actually said this:

"My experience of working from home is you spend an awful lot of time making another cup of coffee and then, you know, getting up, walking very slowly to the fridge, hacking off a small piece of cheese, then walking very slowly back to your laptop and then forgetting what it was you’re doing."

At least he's finally admitted what we all knew - that he's a lazy, workshy prick.

But imagine actually telling the whole country this is how he works while insulting those who work (hard) from home.

Interesting report on what Labour needs to do to win based on polling:

Thought this was interesting too when compared with what politicians and people on social (and legacy) media spend their time talking about:

It wouldn’t even have entered his mind that he’s admitting to being the work shy layabout that some people have managed to convince themselves he isn’t, despite a well documented history of being a work shy layabout.

The truly excellent Naomi Long

I wonder if Boris will have the guts to meet her on Monday while in NI or will he just make a comfort call to the DUP who will most likely suck up to him, buy more lies from him and send him home feeling wanted.

Progressive Britain based on polling and focus groups. I’ll see if I can find the first report.

Edit: my mistake. The report is linked in the first tweet I posted.

Talking of WFH, I was speaking to a young lad who works at one of the big legal practices yesterday. He said his department operates on Tuesday and Thursdays everyone in, flexible for rest of week however, they encourage the team to be in as much as possible. A sensible policy and fair play, I asked how much he goes in, expecting him to say maybe another day a week but he said pretty much every day as that’s where he learns most/gets more done

Surely stuff like this is just common sense. Some people are more productive in the office, some at home, some roles need/benefit from wider team interaction, some don’t. I’d probably add that if an individuals productivity is lower WFH then flexible working privileges for them should be dropped.

From experience of working in offices, a lot of time gets wasted by some people just aimlessly chatting. They’re probably the same people who don’t do a lot at home or anywhere.

No I think it’s clear Labour need a policy agenda, I’m not too fussed until we get to campaign time though. Most voters don’t pay attention until then anyway.

Not sure that’s true. They don’t read manifestos but they want some idea of what the plan is. Said it a lot before but there was no clear agenda from Corbyn in 2019 despite having a manifesto like war and peace. Johnson’s manifesto was half a side of A4 but everyone knew how many police and hospitals and how we were going to Get Brexit Done.

If that’s the game, that’s the game. Not sure it is though.

Election campaigns are about getting a message through to people who are only half listening. How they come across to political obsessives and how they come across to the average voter are two very different things.
