It was a bad result in places in 2018 according to Jess Phillips and Chuka. And with an even more divided and incompetent at best government it'll be interesting to see if the new management reverse that:

David reckons if the Tories lose 200 seats it’s a disaster. I’d imagine they’d be having another party. Despite the low turnouts and bizarre council elections where no one seems to care it’s going to be at least 800 seats surely - the only vague interest is red wall councils

chuka and phillips talk shite, the vote share was equal, ended up with 1000 more seats and an 8% swing in their favour.

all this with a by then unpopular leader who chuka and phillips didn't like

Or perhaps be afforded to have the democratic right to choose their own option? Otherwise what's the point in voting and this entire thread?

I have to say I actually rate my conservative councillor and would normally have voted for him based on his personal performance. Not this time though after all that’s gone on. But I wouldn’t knock anyone for voting for him rather than the Tories.

They have been, hence they voted for them.

The question being asked is why they'd vote for them, because there's is no sensible reason for doing so. The only reasons could be a sense of party loyalty and it's who they always vote for or they're somehow still being taken in by the idea that Tories are economically competent when all the evidence suggests not.

Personally, I don't put a great deal onto local elections, as council have very little actual power. As the old saying goes "It's just about getting the bins emptied". And this council has done it's best to mess that up.

But you've got to question the thinking behind those that think the Tories would be the best boat. They consistently cut spending and services, which is what local government is mainly about. Then if you look at the wider party for leadership, there isn't any. It's full of out-of-touch, self-serving idiots that have fucked up pretty much every decision they've had to make, either through incompetence or deliberately for their own or their friends benefit.

Love the day after an election, everyone spinning like mad. My favourite so far has so be Ash Sakar who is ecstatic the Tories lost in London but can’t bring herself to say who won.

The missus got her first taste of British democracy yesterday said “I’m properly British now”, I pointed out she’d just voted in the local elections so actually was unlike most Brits.

Do you not realise that the shouty pile ons attemping to oppress any views that aren't your own, are in part responsible for the more stubborn to likely to nail their colours to the mast.

Some of the racists rightly excluded from the site, but so little argument from anyone right of centre now on here, that this has become so much an echo chamber now and increasingly futile swimming against the tide.

Fwiw my take on yesterday's polling ... I'd say what's happening after the perceived issues with the government, that the general apathy in voters even now not motivated enough to get out and vote should worry you more than those who did vote Conservative.

I used to think like this , but then I realised most people on here are simply centre or left of centre .. it's a coventry city site , coventry is a Labour city , I'm not sure what else you'd expect..

More centre / centre left than centre right / right is no shock

It isn’t really yes the construction of the seats are different but in 2019 the tories lost 1,300 council seats.

Parties, rising inflation, cost of living, dodgy MPs - yet people couldn’t be bothered to even make some sort of statement against the status quo

Or there wasn't any one party worth voting for to change the status quo.

When you are voting for managers instead of ideals, then there is little incentive to go out and vote. It is just reinforcing the belief that those which are supportive of political parties are doing the right thing.
