Heaven forbid we get another awful strain of Covid or some other National crisis comes along. Who can honestly say they will ever heed a single instruction provided by this PM?

It's not about cake or cheese it's about the fact he's literally destroyed the government's ability to rule the masses by rampantly breaking the law & lying about it.

Oh that's strange Matt, I thought it was Ukrainian soldiers leading the fight and laying down their lives against Russia. Turns out it's Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak.

Sadly some people just love the taste of Tory boots too much. Shame on them.

If it was an honest, genuine mistake by the PM, we would I am sure forgive him, but we know Johnson all to well. Sleaze and lies follow him wherever he goes and I am utterly convinced he knew exactly what he was doing and simply thought he was above the law and as PM, the rules he put in motion were not for him.

I think that's the thing - it only coincides with particular world events now because he's been arrogant enough to try and bluff his way out of it.

He set the rules!

It would be nice if Johnson fans were just honest enough to say,
'Our lot were born to rule.
We won, you lost
We like Johnson best.
We don't care what he's done - we're sticking with him.'

The pathetic justifications shame us all - those that make them and the fact that the rest of us are powerless to remove them.

It feels tonight that we are in a very dark place as a country.

Where will it all end?

A twitter thread from Robert Peston earlier today

1) The police have today concluded that the PM, the Chancellor and the PM’s wife all attended illegal parties, that breached Covid laws written by the PM. This is most serious for Boris Johnson of the three of them, because it was he who told MPs on 8 December…

2)..that he had been “repeatedly assured” there were no parties and that no Covid rules were broken. He now has the challenge of his life to prove that he did not wilfully and knowingly mislead MPs - because if he did deliberately mislead MPs then he has no choice but to…

3) ..resign under the code of conduct for ministers, which he signed off and approved in keeping with normal practice on becoming prime minister. This is perhaps the most important test of the robustness and efficacy of the checks and balances in the British constitution of my…

4) lifetime. If Tory MPs unthinkingly keep him in office without a proper and public assessment of how parliament was misled, because that is what suits them, and if they blithely ignore the Ministerial Code, then the charge will stick that this or any…

5) party with a big majority is simply an elected dictatorship, and the constitution means little or nothing. This is not just a slippery slope. It is the bottom of the slope.

You know the worst thing for me.

Standing at the door of the church at my mum's funeral, turning people away, because we had already met the 30 number limit.

That was heartbreaking.

People saw about the death in the paper, or heard by word of mouth and turned up to pay their respects, many of them, elderly.

I had to stand there and tell them they were not allowed in.

But it's okay, the PM and his cronies were having parties and we should just move on from that.

You my friend can walk around with your head held high knowing you made the toughest of sacrifices for the good of your country.

Yes these pricks should walk or be fired but if that doesnt happen, don't for a second think that what you did was futile or diminishes it in any way because it's possible that you saved lives that day

It’s like that Richard Prior routine where he’s going on about his kids lying.

I was running, well I wasn’t actually running because you remember when you told me never to run in the house, so it looked like I was running but I wasn’t actually running.

Basically in order to defend Boris he’s actually got to lie like a child, you then have to pretend that he’s spoken like an adult. Which in itself is very childish.

Yeah, Im a bit soft so kind of with you on this. From what I’ve read this (probably initial !) fine for him and Sunak related to the surprise birthday cake/party from Carrie. This was 2-3 months after Johnsons nearly died from Covid, some may or may not cut some slack because of this. I’m sympathetic to it

I personally think this alone wouldn't be a resignation matter for either of them. You could even argue if it really was a surprise, then even retrospective fines might feel a bit harsh for them….hard to say without knowing the full details of the ‘party’.

For at least Johnson though, I doubt very much this is the end of it. Id be shocked if there aren’t others and the fact his natural reaction was to lie about the parties is what’s caused the main issue for him. Basically if there’s more fines to come it will surely make his position untenable, especially because of the subsequent lying to Parliament.

I also do believe underlying all this Johnson didn’t think he needed to follow the rules he was setting and probably didn’t truly believe in many of the rules themselves.

Given he's lied about every other detail, the staying for 10 minutes doesn't wash either.

We know he's broken the law, we know he's set those laws, we know his word is not to be trusted so we must assume the worst. That's all there is to it.

I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm not suggesting you move on from your mother, I'm suggesting we allow the pm to move on and govern as elected. Removing him from office will be another sideshow whilst we go through rounds of votes and jostling for position, reshuffling the ministers and generally wasting time when there are more important things going on in the world. Removing him from office sadly won't bring back yours or anyone else's loved ones.

Removing him from office is exactly what needs to happen because he's shown himself to be unfit to govern.

Then we can move on.

We are not at war, and even if we were, we've changed leadership before when the incumbent lost the confidence of the country during an actual existential crisis, WW2.

Stop pretending you're defending him for the good of the country, you're not. You're defending him for the good of the Tory party, which is not the same thing.

A true patriot who believed in democracy and values would want him out regardless of political affiliation. Precisely for the good of the country.

I'm afraid those Tory MPs defending Boris now are a disgrace, their sympathy for others is as fake as their patriotism. It's no surprise you're aligned with them.

This lot have chosen to cleave themselves to the most corrupt, mendacious, and now criminal leadership in history.

Not true. May is honourable and honest, puts the country first even if I find her politics appalling. There are others too. Just because the current leader has made a pact with imbecilic loons doesn't mean there aren't alternatives.

The only half decent Tories were purged at the last election for not following the Brexit cult.

Dominic Grieve was on Newsnight last night and spoke very well

The 2019 intake of Tories are pretty much absolute wankers to a man and woman.

I haven't heard many of them speaking out today NW, have you?

If they can't even get 54 to write letters of no confidence, I think it's reasonable to judge where the Tory party stands on this.

Why the hell are they "biding their time"?

The facts are out and beyond dispute. 'Decent' Tories, if such a thing exists, should act now. The fact that so few of them are should tell you what you need to know about the party as a whole.

One things for sure, he’ll never resign. If there are more fines I’m assuming there’ll be more pressure but I fear it’ll come down to elections only. If they think he can lead them to more victories they may just let him stay.
