Pretty weak really. I was hearing earlier that there’s a list of 50 pivotal oligarchs that handle Putins “money” and we’re targeting 3.

I mean, I like Bernie too, but I can also acknowledge that he's got a real vulnerability on this specific issue. He certainly wouldn't be my pick to lead the international response on this one. But he would be yours?

So our strong sanctions are... to freeze the assets of 3 people.

Presumably the only 3 they could find that haven't donated to the tory party.

Wow that'll sure show Putin.

On foreign policy he’s a bit of an unknown and the 2020 field was poor in general. Doesn’t mean I have to rate Biden who let’s be honest only and barely won because of COVID and is clearly past his prime

6% of the pivotal oligarchs is hardly going to hurt him though. We’re talking about billions and billions of pounds. 6% is nothing. That’s also assuming that these 3 are 3 of those 50. Already being suggested that they aren’t.

For sure. My point is that when it comes to the oligarchs we’ve possibly held everything back. Just heard it suggested again that these 3 aren’t even on the list of 50.

His op-ed on the matter earlier this month made his position clear, and it was completely bizarre IMO. Not sure I'd want someone who spends so much time apologizing for the Russian POV being in charge of the West's response.

Biden is no foreign policy genius (see, uh, Afghanistan) but he does at least have experience and global credibility when it comes to foreign affairs. That's allowed this early response to the invasion to be a united one. For all the complaints you made about the current crop of leaders, the alternate universe of a Trump-Corbyn-Le Pen response to these events doesn't bear thinking about.

If they really want to hurt Russians abroad they need to increase the tax on metallic coloured puffer tops and trainers

I think what we’re generally getting at here is that the quality of politicians has been low for a while now. It’s what has emboldened the likes of Putin who also has his fingers in Moldova and especially Georgia but hasn’t as far as I can tell been sanctioned for it.

My main point is that regardless of the quality of politicians, many of the recent alternatives put forward by Western countries on both the left and the right have a dangerous blind spot where it comes to this specific issue.

I can only imagine what Trump's response would have been to all this!

Which presidential candidate would you rather be running the US strategy here?

Trump would have just looked at the cost of any operation and said no like many American presidents

Biden heard Georgia mentioned. That woke him from his coma as he thought they'd invaded the US. He then went back to sleep

Kennedy would have nuked them.

Other than him - he was a warmonger and possibly Nixon - US tend really not too worried about what happens in foreign policy unless it impacts them

Oh dear. Here comes the main invasion then.

At least sanctioning 3 Oligarchs should slow the invasion down though.

PVA seems to think the UK are responsible for stopping the Russian invasion and only we can stand against them

The fact is the whole of the West has always turned its back on the appalling genocide carried out on a daily basis by China. No one will be getting involved in this on any scale and neither should we.

The West has turned its back on the Russian incursions into other countries already in progress. If a whole country is taken however we’re in uncharted territory

You are frequently posting links with some rather boring comment about sanctioning 3 oligarchs should slow the invasion down

I assume therefore you have a cunning plan of your own. Reveal all.

Oh so you have made 52639 from 2 + 2 then. Thought so.

I've posted three links today:

1 that listed the UK's sanctions as they were announced.
1 that said Germany is putting NS2 on hold
1 that states Putin has requested use of force abroad

All pretty important breaking stories.

In what possible world, apart from yours, does that mean I suggesting the UK is responsible for stopping the invasion?

So, the only way for Putin to back down is for Ukraine to completely demilitarise, thus leaving it totally open to Russia task forces (sorry, 'rebels') or invasion by the troops he's already sent into their country.

It's completely barmy.

Meanwhile, Liz Truss says we're 'prepared to go much further'. What's next? Are you going to call Putin a naughty boy?

Well you seem obsessed with money given to Oligarchs

I would also be genuinely interested in your opinion what the PM should so rather than just constantly linking twitter "exclusives" but not seemingly having an opinion on the matter

Hold referenda on the territories under dispute under agreed terms to be carried out on the watch of an agreed third party

I'm not 'obsessed' with money given to oligarchs. Again you're just making stuff up.

But after promising strong sanctions for weeks when it comes to crunch time he's absolutely shat the bed, and we all know why, because he's totally in bed with god knows how many Russians.

I don't know what the answer is, but I know it isn't freezing the assets of 3 people who don't live in the UK and have been on the US sanctions list for 4 years.
