What I find perplexing around it (Brexit)and subsequent detritus is that this is what we've been attempting under various govts is that the exact thing that the EU is tarnished with has been the exact model of the British state for 30-40 years, well to me anyway.

As the birth rate has fallen, the balance between working age people contributing to the system and people needing to take more than they contribute from the system has skewed.

Rather than the Government be honest with citizens and say:

-We’ve a reducing workforce so

a) you’ll have to work longer
b) more young people need to do on-the-job vocational training rather than go to uni
c) we need working age migrants to balance the books
d) we need to correct the birth rate to sustain the system

Rather than say that, we get “Rwanda” and “smash the gangs”.

It’s taking the population for fools.

Interesting and scary trends.

Ps Birth rate is dropping all over especially in last few years.

Did we know what was being discussed and negotiated? Have we been asked for our views.?

Done in secret and actually everyone who voted in the referendum has been disenfranchised, their vote no longer counts.
The thin edge of the death of democracy.

I cast my vote in the Brexit referendum, which resulted in a majority for Brexit. Almost immediately the result of that legally constituted vote was being opposed and undermined by the likes of Starmer and the left. On what basis is their personal opinion any more valid than mine?

Fucking hell Malc, you've really jumped the shark recently.

Was anyone, whether they voted Leave or Remain, asked for their views on the deal that was signed?

Are we ever asked for our views on any bill or legislation?

Starlink looks like it’s working in Spain rn.

I can see how leftists might think there’s a conspiracy. (That’s coming from me!)

If the loons attacking Tesla think that that will financially impact Musk, they need to take a step back.

Is there anyone on the world who is not running a country with more reach/control? It’s not a closed question, but if Starlink rolls out (I can’t see how it won’t, particularly when nations have comms blackouts that close banking, economy and emergency services and will need a backup) he could be in a position of ridiculous power. Land and seas can be owned / controlled, but controlling the near-space, controlling the satellites and such is something else.

In other news, he just libelled Bill Gates and doesn’t appear to care.

Wishing someone dead?

Not cool.

atm he’s got Trump in his pocket.

Tax him? Expect to have your satellites turned off, your national secrets leaked (I’m sure Musk and his techies have got dirt that make Assange look like a child) and Trump to put a mad tariff on.

Sounds mad, but is it?

(It’s not as mad as “get him dead”)

Regarding this EU deal, let's look at one example - pet passports.

It has been difficult to get your dogs in and out of the country following Brexit. We were told that that's what we deserved because it's what we voted for.

Given that now this is going to be reversed and British pet passports are going to be valid again (previously you needed a very expensive animal health certificate instead, which was limited in time), it just proves the point that the deals done at the time were absolutely shit, and we were indeed just punished for daring to vote out. You can't measure the principles of the vote and its success when it is now clear this has been the play.

I understand that there are arguments on both sides about the outcomes of voting to stay verus voting to leave, but I don't see at this point how anyone can argue that a big part of the argument to stay in wasn't down to being frightened of what these punishments would be if we voted to leave. It's more or less proved itself in the last few days.

As a side note, the whole E-gate stuff is just nonsense, as is the EU vs non/EU queues at airports. It never made the slightest bit of difference. The thing that has caused delays and things like airports and ports is generally down to organisational competence, and staffing, and which flights land at what times. It's largely luck and I've gotten through a border quicker than my partner who is from the EU on a significant amount of occasions.

It isn't really a bargaining tool, and it makes me laugh that many publications and news outlets are behaving as if we have been significantly impacted by this since the vote. As someone who travels internationally about once a week, it's just nonsense to suggest we've hit by this in any serious way.

To be honest, whilst I suspect this forum will have other ideas, I predict the actions of the last few days will only raise the percentage of the population who believe leaving the EU was a good idea.

You could argue that Gates isn't able to sue Musk because it would open him up to discovery and a whole world of legal and ethical pain. There are a lot of remarks about Gates promotion of pharmaceutical products in RFK jr's book 'The real Anthony Fauci' which he hasn't sued over. Both parties have a lot of questionable activities.

The only time I have had problems is with connecting flights with insufficient time between flights, had to run to get a flight in Munich a few years ago which at my age and with luggage was no fun. I have also seen massive queues of Italians having to show their ID cards to fly to another Shengen country.

Also in a lot of airports, British passports can already use the eGates and are still stamped. The idea that they won’t be stamped in future because of the new deal is just nonsense, it’s because of the new EU initiative that was being brought in anyway.

When flying internally in the Schengen Area you’re taken to a different arrivals gate that takes you directly into the arrivals lounge, so you don’t go through passport control.

If they were going through passport control and showing an ID card, they’d probably flown from a non-schengen country.

UK’s 50 richest families hold more wealth than 50% of population, analysis finds

Equality Trust says billionaires getting ‘ludicrously’ richer, with top two now wealthier than whole of 1990 rich list
www.theguardian.com

In the meantime, things are going pretty well for the small minority of people at the top.

But if you need welfare, because you're old, disabled, or sick, there's not enough money, sorry...
