That is a fair point - I wonder if it was boosted by Labour’s HS2 policy?

I wonder if the next few days will be dominated by stories about people abandoning the Tories, the blue wall crumbling and the Tories being totally unelectable in these parts like when Labour lost Hartlepool?

Of course not. It'll be brushed under the carpet and forgotten about by the media by lunchtime.

The demographic realignment is much more of an issue for Labour than the Tories. Partly due to numbers partly due to the Lib Dems.

To be honest you get these results sometimes and the Lib Dem’s it seems threw a lot at it

Lib Dem wins seat - leader says this is a new era in politics - next general election they lose it again

That said I can’t believe Labour are not alarmed at such a collapse - they wilo have to retain Batley - defeat there and where can they go

I suspect to the end of the road for Starmer at party conference time.

All you’ll hear is ‘so you want Richard Burgon?’ but the moves will come from the opposite wing of the Party.

Imagine what fun is going to happen in September at the Labour conference when you are not allowed to put a vote through at your local branch of the Labour Party.

Corbyn had Brexit and two elections, I don't see Starmer getting the boot after three by-elections (and if he does it would be incredibly harsh).

Apparently, it is Labour's lowest share of the vote in a by-election since records began in 1918. Another first.

Well another first I would guess is coming. The first time a party in office has overturned the main opposition in two by elections

This is a genuinely curious question. I can place my hand on election results in 1774, so I'm curious what 'since records began' actually means in this instance.

So, under Kier Starmer Labour has lost two by-elections, one in the so called 'red wall' and one in the so called 'blue wall'. What's the plan here?

I'm not sure why this is being pushed as a disaster for Labour and not the Tories... who lost a bigger % votes and lost the bloody seat itself!

It's bad for both, but much worse for the Tories.

I would reckon it may have something to do with Irish independence and all that.

It is bad all around and a very curious result. Not something that can be explained very easily. This is why the Batley and Spen by-election result is going to be intriguing.. Labour is playing this election down but it really is a must-win for them.

Could be a complete trading of votes between various parties for the by-elections. Just got to sit back and watch what's going to happen.

Be interesting to see how this all plays out. A lot of vox pops this morning going with the blue wall crumbling because too much attention is being paid to the red wall but it would be very foolish to get carried away off the back of one result.

There needs to be effective opposition from somewhere because it doesn't look likes its coming any time soon from Labour. An effectively one party system is no good for anyone no matter who is in charge.

I'm amazed that a Blair & Starmer endorsed candidate hasn't roared to victory There's no way they can spin that number of votes, losing their deposit and coming 4th as anything but a disaster. Surely they can't continue with their head in the sand everything is fine just wait for a general election mantra?

Still they've got their new Stronger Together campaign, sure that'll do the trick. Worked so well for Hilary Clinton and during the Brexit campaign.

There is no doubt some areas with the combo of high remain vote/south of England (feeling ignored) will move away from Tories. Starmer needs these but looks like Lib Dem’s will make it a battle

I think it requires a formal Lib-Lab-Green alliance to be honest.

You can't have an alliance when you've got no real common ground. I wouldn't vote for it.

Id rather not vote than vote Green or Lib Dem, sorry.

Also not sure there’s any evidence a progressive alliance would actually win anything.

I won’t vote for science deniers or Tories, I’m a rational left winger

Both would and have side against Labour when push came to shove. (Coalition and Scotland for two recent examples).

Greens are anti GMO and anti Nuclear which makes them pro climate change and hunger. Plus they have a member created manifesto which is just batshit.

Lib Dem’s are the worst of all worlds, overly woke nonsense mixed with soft Tory economics. Lala land all round.

You should get someone from the Labour Party in Coventry to go on the local radio and say they are voting green at election time. It would go down well with everyone.
