I said he shouldn’t have bothered reaching out to non Labour voters if he didn’t mean it. Is that such an unreasonable opinion?

Saying something you don’t mean is dishonesty and lying.

No change there then.

What do you think that means? He’s made immigration a priority for example, something non Labour voters care about far more than Labour voters. Same with law and order.

What practical impact has this priority had. Their manifesto said they would stop housing asylum seekers in hotels. We have this week heard of two more local hotels being used.

3) Take back our streets

by halving serious violent crime and raising confidence in the police and criminal justice system to its highest levels.

I would suggest that confidence in the criminal justice is system is decreasing week by week as the Manchester Airport pair remain uncharged. Woe betide you if you think the wrong thoughts though.

“Delivering the change Britain needs will require perseverance. The starting point for delivering these missions is to ensure the foundations of good government are right. Labour will make sure we have strong national security, secure borders, and economic stability. Building on these secure foundations, we have already set out the first steps for change. Today we present further policies in this manifesto, as part of the journey of rebuilding our country.”

Any evidence that the foundations of good government are in place?

Good government is good for everyone, not just train drivers, what we have is a different form of nepo-politics.

Suspect it will be of limited use and of no use at all for people suffering from dementia.

The proposed bill only allows those of sound mind who are suffering terminal illness with less than 6 months remaining to make any use of it. With all the hoops you have to go through I can see most people being well into those 6 months, or dying, before all the checks and paperwork are completed.

They've been in for a matter of months. There's 14 years of shit to fix. That's not going to happen overnight.

Give them a chance ffs.

They have lost the room, and no it most likely does not matter with their 34% bullet proof majority.

Perhaps the best time in my lifetime for a third force to emerge.

Yep especially when you consider how very recently suicide was illegal in this country - 1961 and it’s still illegal in Uganda and Tonga

When suicide was illegal

Up until 50 years ago suicide was a crime in England and Wales. But why were people prosecuted for attempted "self-murder" and how did things change?

Thanks PVA, sure it will be very useful to follow.

More people arrived by boat since 1 July than same period last year.

I must apologise to Macron next time we meet up for a beer, despite the higher arrivals the French have stopped lots of people leaving their shores. According to France anyway. I wonder how that is audited,

Small Boat and migrant prevention Activity update

The Home Office publishes small boat arrivals figures on a daily basis at the following link: Small boat activity in the English Channel

Since the 1st July, 17,605 migrants have arrived in 319 small boats, an average of 142 a day. Compared to the same period last year, this is an increase from a daily average of 126 migrants.
However, since 1st July, 13,496 migrants were 'prevented' from making the crossing in the first place, an average of 104 daily preventions.
'Preventions' Data are operational estimates collected and provided to the UK by French authorities.
The prevention data includes:
  • Individuals who are prevented from departing France, or those who return to France
  • Finds of general maritime equipment
  • Arrests of facilitators linked to small boats crossings
Therefore, 43% of all small boat crossings are currently prevented before they even occur.
Note that 'Preventions' data has only been available since 1st May 2024, but in the 2 months that the Conservatives were in power and this data was available, there were 6,322 migrants arriving in small boats, a daily average of 97, and 3,938 were prevented, an average of 61 daily preventions.

O suppose with assisted suicide, it would have likely been discussed with family beforehand so not a shock at the time of death. No unexpectedly discovering a body dangling from a staircase or whatever. Less messy etc.

That was a Tory government decision wasn’t it and one that I would anticipate reform would put back if not remove any end date for selling petrol or diesel cars

They should pay for their shit. Social housing, maybe stock below a given value. I’d much rather focus on getting new builds built properly tbh

Tories moved it from 2030 to 2035. Clearly the whole thing needs reviewing as the market simply isn’t wanting these vehicles in the numbers that governments want to be sold.

Doesn't seem an appetite for it, Barratts predicted for this or next year is 13k, hardly scratches the surface does it, still say get a dirupter in and lay a standard base with all service's provided.
IKEA or someone takes over the city centre site stacks em high hire your own crew, get on with it put the finishes in yourself in your own time, get on the phone to Branson and Go!

I’m not contradicting myself. He started his period in office by reaching out to those who hadn’t voted Labour, now he is basically saying I don’t give a shit about them. It’s Starmer who has contradicted himself. Hardly surprising given he’s a lawyer, if you want two legal opinions on something ask one barrister.

He's not saying that at all. That's what he's saying in your head.

What he's said is that we don't live in a country where a few disgruntled people with an axe to grind can get a few signatures and we call a GE. Imagine if we did. We'd never get to the point of having a govt. Let's say we had a GE based on this - how long do you think it would be before someone else who wasn't happy with the new result started a similar petition and millions of people with like minds signed it? It's a nonsense.
