In my case my insomnia has gotten so bad it’s not safe to be doing the work I need to do while the medication does what it does. Long term if that doesn’t work I’ll be out of a job for MH reasons so some extra help in explaining that to other employers is something I might need to take up.

Have you tried ordering melatonin online? I’d be trying that out before anything a doctor prescribes for it.

It’s definitely worth a try. For some reason you can’t buy it in UK without a prescription but you can order it online.

A doctor will prescribe melatonin. I’d be careful the doses the yanks take are ridiculously high. I don’t know what’s in the stuff you’d order online.

It’s available freely in Italy as well and I take it to help with insomnia and it definitely works. The doses are the same as in America, just without all inevitable sugar for their flavourings.

Well I’ll leave it up to BSB as someone who knows more than me. Maybe the higher doses are needed and the NHS don’t know what they’re talking about.

I’d much rather take it than stuff like Nytol, which, IMO, is far worse.
edit: based on the below, the melatonin doses there seem to be higher actually.

You can get big jars of Melatonin Gummies, This is about GBP10

Natrol Melatonin Time Release 5 mg., 250 Tablets

Features:
100% Drug-Free Sleep Aid
Clinically Tested Ingredient
2 Layer Tablet Provides Immediate and Controlled Release of Melatonin
Contains Vitamin B6 to Support Natural Melatonin Production

A friends Mother who is a Doctor suggested Magnesium Glycinate, I have tried that and not sure it has done much. A friend who cultivates Mushrooms and encapsulates them has a strain for sleep and so far they have been the most successful, I forget the name of the active ingredient.

It’s also that these people often need basic help in things like how to explain their condition to employers or what kind of work they could do with their condition.

Knowing people who have severe mental health issues the ones that have been helped into work or just helped full stop do a lot better than the student bollocks being spouted here of “just leave them alone maaaan”

The biggest increases in incapacity benefits in relation to MH, iirc in the 20-30 (or thereabouts) age bracket. Mental health isn’t really stigmatised the same way it was say, 10 years ago.

Just leaving them alone sounds like a nice idea. Yet, how would young people benefit mentally from being skint, isolated and have no purpose to get out of bed in the morning. That won’t help with depression and something like anxiety won’t be resolved/improved if people aren’t undertaking exposure therapy.

I’m speaking from some past experience here, I struggled quite a lot between my last year at uni and when I entered the workforce. Some of the worst demographics of people suffering with mental health disorders is university students. In my final year at uni, my uni topped a poll where 66% of respondents suffered some MH issues. The poll wasn’t done by Ipsos Mori exactly, but it’s a grim reading nonetheless.

Yeah Nytol didn’t do anything for me. By all means though do DM what works for you.

Hmmm, no mention of reinstaning 2b. Project is pretty much pointless if its only partially delivered, how much capacity will be released on existing services by adding Birmingham to Crewe to not going to Manchester.

Potentially could be used by people travelling from Liverpool but doesn't HS2 go into a different station in Crewe to existing services so you'd be relying on people being happy to not just change trains but change stations.

Alarm bells ringing with this as well "It is also understood that HS2 Ltd will not be overseeing Phase 2a, instead it will be handed to a private sector consortium"

Im still hoping for some kind of HS3/NPR type east-west plan that connects on. But more hope than expectation. Crewe isn’t a bad place to leave it for future expansion though. TBH I’m amazed they’ve given us anything considering the current treasury brain.

I think at least getting it partially delivered provides the case and an actual basis for delivering it full

If the trials show improvements in mental health, what’s the issue?

The people I know with serious MH related problems need all the support they can get not to be left to rot TBH.

Read the article and look at the concerns that the charities directly involved in mental health have. Note also the distinct lack of evidence; where are the studies quoted, for example.

And then join the dots with regard to Labour's approach to welfare, now and in its recent history, and ask yourself whether this is about supporting people with serious mental health issues or more about forcing them back to work.

The people I know with serious mental health issues need the service to be available to them, and not left to fend for themselves, hurt themselves, or hurt others, TBH.

They don't generally need a back to work conversation with an untrained adviser pushing to get them off benefits.

I'd say try a bit of humanity and think through what's really going on in those "back-to-work" interviews with seriously ill people, before taking Liz Kendall's word for it, but I get that you feel obliged to defend the party at all costs.

They aren’t back to work conversations though. That’s the mistake you and FP are making. You’ve heard DWP and assumed it’s A4E 2: This time it’s mental.

Hopefully private sector funding as well.

I wonder which version of the costs they used for the cost: benefit analysis - the real ones or HS2 Ltd‘s work of fiction?

Apparently 2b is still on the table I’m reading. I’ll be honest I’m totally lost as to the current state of rail commitments. Everything been cancelled, uncancelled, renamed, and watered down I can’t keep track.

Obviously these people should have quit cold turkey and I hope they’re suitably ashamed (assuming it’s not a coincidence which is possible TBF)

I dunno guys. Maybe you’re right and people should be left to die of drug overdoses and heart disease because they didn’t get their help from God or a TikTok influencer but Big Farmer instead.

Isn’t prevention a bit late once someone is morbidly obese? Surely it’s at the cure stage then.

If we don’t combat what leads someone to become obese in the first place we’ll need a lot more Ozempic for sure. No problem with using it for the already morbidly obese, provided they’ve been through the other pathways first.
