Its an interesting conundrum really, obviously the previous bloke didn't need any such, but did any of his policies benefit him?Truss no Idea what her situation is, then we have Boris who wasn't averse to for instance getting his wedding for free I think.plus selected others, hard to make stuff stick when the opposition have history here?

Calling yourself the party of change and indulging in similar behaviour isn't great, even if the extent of it is probably far less

So what have we learnt from the new government in the last month.
1. They will hit pensioners who have worked all their life, and who still struggle to pay their bills
2. The PM and other leading members, who are in 150k each year have decided not to take gifts, eg new trousers or dresses, from donors who definitely are not doing it to get advantages from the government personnel, ohh no way is that why they are doing it. Got to say if I was on 150k there is no way could I afford a £250 suit, no way
3. Guess whose next to be hit in the upcoming budget, yes it’s people living alone who get 25% off their council tax bill, and guess who makes up 80% of that category, yes it’s the pensioners again

bloody corrupt, both labour and conservatives, hang their heads in shame the lot of them

you work hard all your life but you are the first to be hit

disgrace

Wingy we all know all politicians are corrupts and will pledge anything to get into power. I respect you and your opinions but to keep hitting the pensioners is inexcusable. You wait till the budget, ‘the party of the working people’ will hit us big time, yet those sat on their fat arses who do nothing but complain, will get a above inflation rise in their benefits.

mum sick to death of labour/conservatives et al, they are so corrupt
Never mind Starmer and his Mrs will be shopping for new outfits next week courtesy of the next billionaire who wants favours, let’s make excuses for them for doing that as no way on 160k a year can you afford your own dress/suit

it’s a disgrace full stop

Pensioners aren’t working people. You’re literally complaining the party of working people is giving pay rises to working people and not benefits rises.

Feel pensioners should get more benefits by all means. But let’s not pretend people working hard don’t deserve pay rises and we should be giving millionaires more benefits.

Meanwhile the currency speculaters will be making a killing because the BOE decided to maintain the interest rate which will mean more businesses folding for a difference of 0.2 %!

Oh the other thing, isn't energy linked to the fuel price anymore as petrol is at least 25p reduced per gallon atm, just in time to stick more tax into the mix?

The majority of the millionaires you are referring to do not have millions in liquid assets. It’s as likely the 85 year old widow who bought the house she is still occupying in 1965, who worked hard as did her husband and raised a hardworking family. Paid taxes and national insurance against the promise of a pension and a health and care service to support them after their working life has come to an end.

Not to have wankers like Starmer and Reeves with the vote of only 20% of the electorate shaft them. With more to come.

If you’ve got millions in assets you’re a millionaire. Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos don’t have their money in cash either.

I’m sorry but the state shouldn’t be paying you to stay in a home you can’t afford during a housing crisis.

Is it? What mortgages do the state pay for for anyone else? Pensioners are just as entitled to housing benefit as anyone else but it’s not the governments job to protect your financial assets. Oh no you might have to move out of a three bed semi in London worth £1.5m. How awful.

Giving fucking Elton John £300 for his bills.

For someone so quick to jump on any government handouts I’m surprised you’re not all over this.

I’ve got no massive issue with removal of winter fuel payments as long as they find better ways to ensure those that need the cash, get it (it’s why I’d have delayed this decision for a year to make sure plans were in place)

Removal of single person discount* would be OTT for both pensioners and single parents. If we want to hit rich people/pensioners just bump up Council tax for properties worth say 1m+ (2m+ in london) and if they don’t have liquid assets/cash allow it to accrue against the property and be payable on sale or passing

*in Birmingham that would be an equivalent rise of 40%+ in a couple of years due to the appalling mismanagement of the councils finances.

ps I say all this when we don’t actually know what’s going to be in the budget so can’t get too wound up yet

Don’t you think that someone like my example 85 year old who worked hard all their life and, alongside her dead husband, paid taxes and NI and thus making a full contribution to society with an expectation and promise of support in their later life deserve more consideration than a feckless and jobless 24 year old with 5 children by as many different mothers. Why should my fucking taxes support lead-swinging arseholes like that.

This generational divide seems unprecedented to me, I would advise to be careful what you wish for. If you are lucky, you too will get old.

Yeah, there’s some wriggle room whether they change treatment of BoE losses or not now. I think they’ll stand by the winter fuel policy as they’ve taken the stick but hopefully they’re just managing expectations elsewhere. I just hope they don’t forget their ‘plan for growth’ !

Way too early to judge either way. I’ve said before I don’t mind paying a bit more tax if it’s part of a plan for growth and improvement of services. If we don’t see that by the next election they’ll struggle

Given the ageist attitudes of some on here, I have come to the conclusion that I have paid more than enough taxes in my lifetime for very little benefit and hence don’t wish to pay a penny piece more.

Well I'm talking about the people over the road from me, hardworking dad, wife stays at home tending her three young children in a housing association property, who according to them the association refused to fix the back fence panel and the gate to the shared entry, she organised it and coughed up,not her responsibility but!
The old age pensioner who lives next door paid for it!

How many 'feckless' are there living it large? I remember when my job was in jeopardy during covid I had a look how much I'd be entitled to and it was fuck all, I would have been on the streets within a month. Not sure I buy the idea that there's huge numbers of people having a nice comfortable life with zero intention of ever working. If there is tell me their secret!

Similarly not every pensioner is broke. My Dad worked a regular job, my mum didn't work, their combined income now they are retired is around the same as mine. But they have no housing costs and Mmy mortgage is about to shoot up £300 a month and if rumours are to be believed I will shortly lose the single person council tax discount. I'm also not expecting to get much support from the state by the time I reach retirement age yet I have 'worked hard all their life and paid taxes and NI and thus making a full contribution to society'.

And this is the problem, it's not unreasonable to not pay the well off pensioners a winter fuel payment, but how do you assess that. And how do you assess it without it costing more than you save not making the payments?
