3. Guess whose next to be hit in the upcoming budget, yes it’s people living alone who get 25% off their council tax bill, and gueho makes up 80% of that category, yes it’s the pensioners again

It’s as likely the 85 year old widow who bought the house she is still occupying in 1965, who worked hard as did her husband and raised a hardworking family. Paid taxes and national insurance against the promise of a pension and a health and care service to support them after their working life has come to an end.Pensioners aren’t working people. You’re literally complaining the party of working people is giving pay rises to working people and not benefits rises.
Feel pensioners should get more benefits by all means. But let’s not pretend people working hard don’t deserve pay rises and we should be giving millionaires more benefits.

There's wiggle room according to the telegraph this morning!I’ve got no massive issue with removal of winter fuel payments as long as they find better ways to ensure those that need the cash, get it (it’s why I’d have delayed this decision for a year to make sure plans were in place)
Removal of single person discount* would be OTT for both pensioners and single parents. If we want to hit rich people/pensioners just bump up Council tax for properties worth say 1m+ (2m+ in london) and if they don’t have liquid assets/cash allow it to accrue against the property and be payable on sale or passing
*in Birmingham that would be an equivalent rise of 40%+ in a couple of years due to the appalling mismanagement of the councils finances.

Given the ageist attitudes of some on here, I have come to the conclusion that I have paid more than enough taxes in my lifetime for very little benefit and hence don’t wish to pay a penny piece more.Yeah, there’s some wriggle room whether they change treatment of BoE losses or not now. I think they’ll stand by the winter fuel policy as they’ve taken the stick but hopefully they’re just managing expectations elsewhere. I just hope they don’t forget their ‘plan for growth’ !

But they have no housing costs and Mmy mortgage is about to shoot up £300 a month and if rumours are to be believed I will shortly lose the single person council tax discount. I'm also not expecting to get much support from the state by the time I reach retirement age yet I have 'worked hard all their life and paid taxes and NI and thus making a full contribution to society'.
And this is the problem, it's not unreasonable to not pay the well off pensioners a winter fuel payment, but how do you assess that. And how do you assess it without it costing more than you save not making the payments?
