I do wonder if Sunak is doing everything he can to lose his own seat. What’s the betting if he does win his seat there’s a by-election within a year due to his resignation as an MP.

Ridiculous stuff. Although I would suggest paid national service as an alternative to a criminal record/prison term for offenders (non sex crimes) aged 18-30. Bit of direction to get them back on track and help the prison overcrowding issue.

I think you'd need to widen the net a bit more than those who committed sex crimes.

Of course. It would need to be case by case. But for sure if you get in there early enough you could potentially take plenty of people away from a life of crime. Anecdotal but I know two lads personally who would have thrived in the military rather than spending ten years in and out with a needle in their arm. One of whom is no longer with us. I’m sure you could get a tune out of some of the poor kids getting dragged into the gang scene early doors too. Maybe you offer it as an alternative to a record/sentence rather than it being compulsory.

The snippet i heard on the radio news this morning suggested that Labour's response to the idea, instead of asking what the actual point of it was and what it was seeking to achieve, was to say it was 'uncosted'.

She said it several times on the politics show

She said everything in the manifesto will be costed and the tories arent

also even aims as to scrap NI need costing even though there is no timeline

then she admitted the defence spending commitment from Labour is an aim so not costed

He has a majority of nearly 30,000 so I'd be stunned if even he managed to lose there.

It's not even correct, the tories have said how they're funding it, its coming out of the levelling up pot, (or whatever fancy name they've given it), so that should have been her line attack as levelling up is already a disaster.

I’ve no idea if it’s correct, or effective politics. I just think that having her response to such an obviously dumb and unworkable plan still be “It’s uncosted” shows an almost deranged commitment to staying on message.

Let's be honest , they are using national service as a way of trying to reduce immigration as they don't know how to control it any other way

Well they wouldn’t be eligible for the military service part. I’m sure there are hordes of immigrants who’d see no problem in doing volunteer work if it meant they got into the country, and plenty of others would just dodge it the same as British 18-year olds would.

It's not uncommon to hear about people on benefits living a life of luxury but I can't work out how anyone would manage it.

During covid when there was a very real prospect of me losing my job I looked at what I'd be entitled to and I'd probably be able to survive for a month before I'd basically be homeless. And then again recently I spent some time in hospital and essentially got told work related stress is going to kill me, looked into what I'd be entitled to if I took up their suggestion of being signed off work long term and again it was fuck all.

Is there genuinely people doing more than just surviving on benefits, how the hell are they doing it?

Can you imagine being a low income 18 year old, renting your own place, working full time, with a family, then being told you have to sacrifice one weekend a month to do some volunteer work 🫠

Sunak probably taking the day off the campaign trail to go to Wembley... Will give him one thing it takes a lot for most of the country to unite behind Leeds United if he does show his face

I notice that Starmer has been doing a tour of lower and non-league football grounds to appear more 'with it'. He should do Nuneaton next

I mean why not bring back national service. The tories have already brought back scurvy, rickets and a whole host of other Victorian era illnesses. Fuck it, bring back workhouses too. So long as the plebs know their place.

This is why they won’t to open coal mines again. They want 3 year old kiddies digging coal… and 4 year old kiddies… digging coal as well as the 3 year olds.

Of the people I know who have never worked they are all either serious MH problems that they can’t get PIP for and barely living (can’t afford to eat and heat, haven’t bought new clothes in years, don’t own a mobile, etc), or they do crime of some kind, usually drug dealer/growing weed but also dodgy stuff with cars, IPTV, stolen goods, that sort of thing. Lots of cash in hand work too so tax evasion.

All cutting benefits would do is drive the first group further down and increase the amount of crime the second group do.

Unless you work for yourself you of course have the option of bringing a claim against your employer. Not a given but if they’ve failed in their duty of care RE your workplace stress etc.

I hope things improve.
