On most metrics, New Labour did a great job.

Iraq screwed Blair's legacy.

If Starmer could somehow big up the achievements of the 1997 government, while distancing himself from the Iraq debacle, he'll be home and dry.

Yeah, just distancing himself from over 100,000 deaths while saying nothing about what’s currently going on in the world.

Fuck em, these people have zero empathy for people losing less paid jobs with no notice nor the severance package that they get. Fuck them.

Naa. They just love Sunak so much that they’re doing everything that they can to hold onto him for a few extra months.

I’m thinking of setting up a new email account and emailing my Tory mp a daily countdown to the end of his job.

give him tips such as cutting Netflix and avocado in toast, whilst telling him to get one of the numerous jobs out there and drag himself up by his boot straps

Sunak has just said that no flights to Rwanda before the GE. Labour has said no flights under them so the charade is over. Let’s see if we can get a refund and spend it on the NHS instead.

Are you sure about that? Would you want a situation like North Korea or Russia, where the ruler can claim that he's got the support of 99% of the population?

Would you really want to be obliged to vote for a party that you don't believe in?

Kim Jong-un's grip on power in peril after just 99.91% voted for his party

The last elections of this kind saw 100% of voters back the Workers' Party of Korea.

I do it every few years here.

I would absolutely vote for the least worst option in a dictatorship playing faux democracy. I’d also try and get out the country and do what I can legally and socially to fight it, but not voting in that situation just lends more credibility to the winner.

The fact is even though those who don’t vote think they’re seen as great rebels against the monilitithic corporate political system, in reality they’re lumped in with people who can’t be arsed and used to justify whatever the winners want. Low turnout is seen as a tacit acceptance of the status quo at best and as evidence that no one cares about democracy anyway at worst.

Anyway, putting the compulsory voting issue aside, it certainly is fun to be around for the Tory end-of-times party. Lots of skewering of Sunak and the Tories in the media today. Long may it continue.

As Malcolm Tucker said about Nicola Murray, his announcement marks ‘the end of a very short book that nobody enjoyed reading’.

How do you know what the people who don't vote think? All these lazy assumptions and clichés, based on literally nothing beyond your own opinion.

Part of living in a free country is that not everyone does what you want, get over it and quit whining.

If you want bigger uptake in elections, then convince people to vote by offering something that means more, and maybe put value on social sciences and politics as part of the curriculum.

This sneering at a large proportion of the population and actually calling them c***ts, as has been done here, is frankly pathetic.

I still can’t get over how bad Sunak’s announcement was. Like it had been scripted by Labour HQ. Just perfect.

Already planning how I’ll stay up to watch the result, who is everyone looking forward to seeing lose?

Gullis for me. Just the exemplar 2019 Tory.

Because they’re in this thread telling me.

I’m not whining. Do what you like. And I’ll say what I like about it. Having been around politics quite a bit I’m quite confident in saying spoiling your ballot or not voting has absolutely zero impact on any politicians decision making.

Hahaha. OK insert “some” at your leisure. But I only ever hear of two reasons for non voting “I can’t be arsed” and “I have special political principles that mean none of these parties are to my liking and no I don’t want to start a party and test my beliefs I just want to show how I’m better than those terrible people picking the least worst options because I’ve got PRINCIPLES!!”

And I’m saying from the outside everyone assumes you’re the former even if you’re the latter.
