I was thinking about this over lunch. How many of our current squad have been disappointing so far this season? Going through it I was actually pretty surprised how many players I felt were fitting into that category.

Grimmer
Brown
Ogogo
Doyle
Andreu
Bayliss
Shipley
Thompson
JCH
Bakayoko
Hiwula
Chaplin

Anyone want to list theirs? I know there's some in here that haven't played all that much, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels as if there has been some underperforming going on.

Davies also has been pretty poor.

I wrote about Chaplin saying what a great signing etc. But he works hard yet has been a bit of a let down so far I reckon. Hopefully he has a better second half of the season.

I wouldnt disagree with any one on that list.
But then again, we're mid table following promotion via the play offs.
Perhaps expectations are too high more than anything else?

Lol!

This is fucking hilarious-you have literally named the entire team!

You’d have been better off putting down Burge as the only player who hasn’t been disappointing you this season!

I could understand if we were bottom of the league and yes these players ‘could’ be doing better but FFS they’re only human and everybody makes the occasional mistake.

The difference between footballers and most other professions is that player’s mistakes are witnessed by 1000’s of people.

If we concentrate on their weaknesses then they are bound to make more mistakes.

Have a critique but don’t criticise.

City do much better when we are all Positive.

I think that’s pretty harsh on Jordan Thompson to club him in with disappointments. Had one good game and one shaky game from what I remember, but it’s his first foray into the team as an 18 year old, need to be a bit more lenient.

Other than that, I can’t really disagree with any. The worry is that none of the new signings have impressed thus far.

I too was surprised to see Thompson on the list. We need to remember too that he was playing out of position when at RB.

The biggest disappointments for me have been:

Ogogo
Andreu
Shipley
JCH
Bakayoko
Hiwula

I've not included Chaplin because he has arguably yet to play alongside the type of strike partner he needs.

Ok that's fine, I see your point, but am I wrong though?

Can you tell me of that list any players that have impressed you?

Brown has been okay and Bayliss still impresses in little flashes.

I agree with the Thompson comments also.

Think you’ve been a little harsh on some. Game of opinions and varying expectations tho.

Grimmer - harsh, improved since return
Brown - steady L1 performances
Ogogo - not happening for him
Doyle - victim of overuse
Andreu - stats had him best in L1 in early doors.
Bayliss - biggest disappointment, knackered.
Shipley - step up too soon
Thompson - harsh, very raw. No RB.
JCH - GPM is on cue for his career, top scorer
Bakayoko - scapegoat, McNulty beating stick.
Hiwula - not a winger but 4 goals still.
Chaplin - many reasons but 4 goals still.

My assessment so far.

Improved since August...
Burge - improved again this year, until Walsall fiasco.
Sterling - flashes of this ability were told of after a few games
Thomas - kid speaks for himself

More to come to if managed correctly in balanced side with more development...
Thompson - young, out of natural position when selected more development required.
Hiwula - scored 4 from left wing, play him as a striker clearly more to come.
Bakayoko - athletic powerful unit, needs plenty of work but don’t write off yet.

Performing at their level...
Brown - steady and consistent
Willis - athletic and dependable the last 12 months
Davies - does what it says on the tin
Hyam - consistent when called upon
Grimmer - improved since his injury, suffering from a long 17/18 season.
Kelly - now fitness returning I see no issue for L1
Doyle - can compete still but it’s likely his last 6 months in contention.
JCH - asked to play a new way, a hold up back to goal not his style yet leading marksman.

Disappointing, yet to shine for what ever reason...
Ogogo - no idea why, I’m still hopeful given his history.
Bayliss - not shining at all, drifting in and out of games, caught to often in possession, poor decision making, a shadow of the exciting L2 version. Likely knackered.
Chaplin - system failure, partner not right, confidence lost, yet to settle, still scored 4. *Delete as applicable.

L1 a step too far currently....
O’Brien - same errors as L2.
Shipley - looks to be a level above him.

Injury, fitness issues, personal issues, gone missing/ likely times up here...
Andreu - seems to of gone missing, despite early season best passer of a killer ball man in L1.
JJ - cruelly struck with another injury.
Biamou - another cruel injury early into the season.

Benefit for a loan spell in L2 getting minutes...
Mason - needs time to adapt to mans game
Allasani - still raw, exciting if it clicks.

I would say after last season and even taking our 5 match winning run into account it’s Mark Robins who has been disappointing.

Depends on what your measuring that on, if your expectation of him is to be more expansive your letting yourself down. He’s got his philosophy and believes in it as managers do.

If it’s on results then out of the promoted sides we’re a point ahead of the L2 champions Accrington, all be it played one game more. 3 points behind Wycombe and a mile behind free scoring Luton.

We’re on a par with settled promoted sides generally.

Indeed. Totally respect your response too.

I'll ask you this though, who has shone this year? I'm struggling a bit.

Definitely frustrated with Robins. Think he needs to go to an all inclusive for a week and have a chill out.

Only real answer to that is no one has, of our own. Luke Thomas has been your stand out player but even he has only just started to hit some consistency with the desired end product.

As for MR I think he’s chilled enough that’s his issue for many, maybe a 18-30 holiday with the promise of some action to get his pulse racing a bit is required.

Okay some have just put the whole team down which just isn’t correct in my view, we aren’t playing great but I think there is a difference between expected level (from a fans view) and actual ability. Ogogo (notice it keeps trying to say google on spell check!) has been the main one for me. He was the replacement for Doyle and it’s just not happening and with Doyler on his last legs it’s worrying. As for Chaplin, he was built up to be a super striker and the man we chased all summer so the hype was always going to beat him before he kicked a ball. He will come good in my opinion

Earlsdon-you’re a good un!

Honestly every player has impressed me at some point this year but I can see where you’re coming from.

I have seen about 12 games and most of them just haven’t been consistently good.

Which is not surprising considering where we at (mid table!).

Ogogo biggest let down but then I still don’t feel as though he’s come back sufficiently from his pre-season injury and subsequent recovery.

Chaplin’s been playing in a weird formation and never really part of a proper striking duo (same goes for JCH) and I feel both need to play in a two.

Lots of players playing out of position (Robins formation fault and terrible recruiting ) is also not helping them perform to the best of their ability.

What I mean by this is either Robins picks a formation and then recruits for particular positions to fit the formation. OR that Robins picks a formation and then fits players into his system (whether they can play there or not).

I feel very strongly that it’s the latter that is causing City our consistency problems and that is not the players fault but Robins.
