If Burton win all their remaining games they will be champions - FACT. If you disagree with that you are simply wrong. So... Is our destiny in our own hands? Yes or No?

Firstly the top 2 get automatic promotion which is what this was about, so we can finish behind Burton and still be automatically promoted. So Burton could win every game and we could still be automatically promoted in your scenario.

And yes, our destiny is in our own hands. If we reach 95 points, we will go up automatically, no doubt about that.

If you start getting hung up on what could theoretically happen then you could make an argument that Crewe could still get promoted as they can still reach 83 points this season. Obviously realistically there is 0% chance that Crewe will be promoted but in theory it could happen.

It's clearly NO, to anyone educated.

Yes, all teams will drop points but that's not the point of the phrase.

No it is not! We can only overtake teams above us IF, repeat IF, they slip up. Please try to grasp this simple concept before one of us dies.

Just because we're Coventry City doesn't mean we won't lose players whilst others do. Strange thing to say unless I've misunderstood? ......

It doesn't even have to be that scenario wee - a "reckless" tackle on a few key players, they could be out for god knows how long.

I would hope lessons have been learned and, as we are showing the best chance we've had in recent history to actually finish in the top 6, we don't cash in and keep a decent sized squad.

Ffs everyone shut up

19 matches left. We need 12 or 13 wins to get autos. Time to go on a run asap. That simple

Everyone is right!

Would think it pretty clear that if we won all 19 remaining games we would go up, cos no other team would surely replicate that, so when people say within out own hands, I think that is what they mean.

If we win enough games then surely we will go up.

Wallsalls cup run could work in our favour too. They will be playing 2 games a week most weeks.

Just takes one bad week, one or two injuries, a sending off, suspensions etc and the wheels can fall off rapidly.

As for the teams below us up to 10th place, most have games in hand yes. But we have points in the bag so far.

We have had our blip, lasted a bit longer than I imagined, but still believe the top 2 can and will be caught.

its never OBE ! Over before easter.

We can reach 105 points maximum, the only way our destiny would categorically be out of our hands would be if you believe 2 teams can get over 105 points at the end of the season. Now theoretically this could happen but in reality it has 0% of happening.

I get the concept but its not one worth considering as its based on scenarios which have no chance of happening, your saying we could win every game and not get promoted. In theory you are right but in the real world where football is played you are wrong.

If we reach 95 points, which is within our own destiny to make happen. Then we go up automatically. 100%

I know it's hard not to be gutted but just gotta remmeber we win vs southend and scunthorpe and we are on 54pts

Plausible that Walsall Burton wigan or gills drop at least 2 pts in next 2 weeks and all of a sudden we are right bang in it

I have no argument with any of that apart from your insistence that it is ''in our own hands''. You clearly do not understand the phrase. (or percentages)

As I say, both correct.

It is not in our hands because if the teams win all their games we cannot catch them.

By the same token though if we won enough games (a fantastic run) and won nearly all our matches we would go up, because surely no-one would be able to replicate that.

As CCFC says, if we get ,95 points that will almost certainly mean automatic promotion.

Obviously a bit dim, or doesn't understand basic English. He/she doesn't seem to grasp that it's nothing to do with what could happen, it's to do with the meaning of a few basic english words that make up a factual phrase.

In our hands means that no matter what other teams do we can still gain promotion e.g. we're top of the league and everybody has to better us. Promotion is not 'in our hands', if we win all of our remaining games then 99.9% of the time we will be promoted, however if Walsall and Burton also win all of their games then we will end up 3rd.

We are however capable of gaining promotion by putting the hard work in and gaining more points than the teams above us for the rest of the season. I understand the point you're trying to make but your use of the phrase 'in our hands' is incorrect.

Its still early days with loads to play for and many more twists and turns to contemplate before we write off our chances of a top 2 finish.
Having now played Burton Walsall and Gillingham we have on paper lots of winnable games ahead and we have every chance of getting back into the automatic promotion race - we cant win every week now can we?

Go for it City - keep the faith!

Silly getting in an argument about it surely. Literally of course no it is not in our hands and everyone agrees with that.

We win enough games though you have to believe we will go up.

Tell that to CCFC! There shouldn't be an argument but because it is not a matter of opinion, but there you go.
Anyhow Otis, I've seen you argue the toss when roused!

As they are both above us and have games in hand that would prove to be irrelevant if they won all of their other games, therefore not in our own hands

The top 5 have all lost 5 games each except Walsall 4 and Gillingham 6.

That suggests it will be a tight run in. So lots to still play for. Games in hand are not always points in the bag.

I doubt none of the top 5 will replicate their first half of the season results exactly.

So I anticipate things will change.

Scenario.

If City were to win 5 games on the bounce now, or 5 out of 6 (next 6 games are Southend A, Scunthorpe H, Port Vale A, Bury H, Shrewsbury A, Fleetwood H) then you would have to think we would be in the top 2 or very, very close to top 2.

We have a brilliant last half of the season you would have to think we would go up!

Not 100% of the time, as there is a possibility that Burton and Walsall can win all (but one) of their games. That is obviously extremely unlikely (as is us winning all of ours) but that would take a small fraction away from the 100 meaning if we win all of our games 99.9% we will get promoted, that 0.1% means its not in our hands.
