The fans need to fall back in love with Coventry City and fast according to club legend Dion Dublin.

And the best way to bring the Sky Blue faithful back onside is a cup run, starting with the Capital One Cup that announced the first round of games for the 2015/16 season this week.

Coventry face a trip to Rochdale and the Midlands side will be looking to push on from a season that saw them only avoid relegation from League One on the final day of the campaign.

Tony Mowbray was in temporary charge for their successful escape and the former Celtic and Middlesbrough boss has since been announced as the permanent successor to Steven Pressley.

And after a few years of strife for the former Premier League side, that included playing their games in nearby Northampton for the 2013/14 campaign due to a ground dispute with the owners of Ricoh Arena, Dublin is desperate to see the glory days return.

“With Coventry being away from home against Rochdale they have to be up for it, and they have to start to do something,” he said.

“It’s been a demise at Coventry, the club hasn’t been run very well – even when I was there you could see signs that it wasn't being run in the correct way.

“What’s happened is I think fans have become disheartened with Coventry City, and disheartened by their best players leaving.

“When I was there we had players like Gary McAllister, Gordon Strachan, George Boateng, Darren Huckerby, Noel Whelan.

“We had a really good squad of players, but it’s not like that anymore, and Coventry really need to get back and a good way to do that is having a good run in this cup.

“They’ve had several managers and they’ve not been able to turn it around but Coventry City is a big football club with a big stadium and a big following, but a lot of that following has dropped away having lost their stadium for a little bit of time and then playing at Northampton for a while.

“Going away to Rochdale will not be easy, Rochdale will look forward to hosting Coventry because they have been in a bad way for some time. I hope Coventry can go to Rochdale and get a result, but it’s Cup football.”

Thanks for that Dion but it will take a lot more than a a cup run to sort this club out.

I'd love it if we did something in the cups this year. I think the last time we progressed past the 4th round was 2009?

I also don't get why City fans still/did bad mouth him. At the end of the day we would have went down a few seasons earlier if it weren't for his goals. Yes, he may have joined Villa and the move was a bit sour but he was a great player for us for many years when he could have easily jumped ship a few years before he did go to Villa.

It was absolutely criminal that Hoddle took Ferdinand over Dublin to WC1998.

The Ricoh is on Homes Under The Hammer. Some property investors from London have bought it.

Thought it was strange Dublin was really promoting this cup but he is ambassador of it so that explains it. Lost a bit of love for him going to Villa but still very fond of him for the years we did get out of him.

I hated him when he left us more because of where he was going, but in time I can see why he went but still think he was good enough for a real top side and the same with George Boateng.
