Did Frank inherit a top squad? (1 Viewer)

was just talking to my old man about this, arguably only incomings are rushy, grimes and kane with binks and sheaf out (ignoring other new players as not as much impact as previously mentioned players so far)
Would/could have robins have achieved what frank has done so far? is this just the coming together of a quality group of players that are now a tight knit bunch of lads?
has it been all down to tactics, background staff and possibly numerous other things that frank has changed behind the scenes?

The squad assembled By Austin and Robins was littered with talent , it reached an Fa cup semi and were within reach of the playoffs for much of the first season, with some leftovers from the playoff final team .

The addition of grimes was a masterstroke last January.

Some players needed further development as many young players do , and now we are seeing the rewards of top top level coaching by Frank and his team .

Also worth pointing out this is some of these lads 3rd season together and continuity and relationships forged play some part

I seem to recall Grimes apparently being tracked by Robins or under the Robins regime. Doesn't mean he would have signed but if true it was a longer term target.
Woolf was targeted in January so who knows if he was longer sought after too.

I'm sure Lampard drove KKH and probably Rush too but as stated the main thing is the improved standards and no slow start.

Robins has done well at Stoke so far this year as has Adi at Boro. Wonder why they could never get us to start well.

It was only people annoyed robins got sacked that tried to say the players wernt good enough to have a good start to a season

If it helps I was annoyed robins went and I maintained the recruitment was good .. these lads gave us some really good memories that first season together

It must have slipped my memory but my overriding thoughts on the second Robins regime was slow starts until he got things to click each year. But I stand corrected regarding 21/22

Sometimes you need a refresh even if it does seem tough at the time! Robins is a legend here but the whole team needed a shake up and a new approach

Of course we had good players. Lampard stated one of the reasons he chose Coventry over the other offers he got was because of the players at our club.

But it certainly didn't seem it. If you look back on here we were supposed to have wasted the money from Gyokeres and Hamer. Many expected to hit the ground running with a squad of players not knowing each other or having an idea of what was expected from them. As they settled down they started to look good.

But for some reason we had a poor start to the season as usual. Robins got the sack and Lampard took over. We signed Grimes who has been the glue to our side. Lampard kept the players he wanted. The rest is history.

He inherited a top 6 squad, the only first choice adition is Grimes.

MR was sacked partly due to poor early season form and also due to the break up of his backroom staff and his inability to rectify that.

We are lucky to have Lampard who is building on the solid foundations that MR left behind. But let's not get carried away, as nothing has been achieved as yet.

9 games unbeaten, top players out injured, top of the Championship, GD of +20 when the next best is +6. Even if we lose our next game the worst we could be is 2nd. The best attacking side I've ever seen us be. Becoming solid at the back.

It wouldn't be a surprise if we reach November undefeated. I know we're Coventry City and are used to things going wrong. But if anything we should have more points than we actually have.

Its all about continuity. Robin's built the squad and it was developing into something special. A couple of poor starts cost us, but King saw the issues surfacing and decided to go for broke. Frank's appointment was a little controversial. Now it looks like a master stroke. Perhaps it was one of the missing links in the sense a former world class player coaching and passing on his experience to the likes of Rudoni, Torp etc have excellerated the squads development. Grimes was the glue we were missing, and all that remained was keeping the squad, and resist offers for our best players. King has been strong on that issue, and it is now being rewarded. January will be super interesting to see if we can strengthen once more for the final run in. Frank earns respect by being Frank, and closer in playing age than Robin's was. I think that creates a closer bond and understanding with the players. Some of our players are good enough for the premier league and will truly want to get there. Bigger contracts the likes they have not seen before beckon. We are not perfect by any means, and we will be tested yet but Frank wants it as much as the players do with promotion on his CV and opportunities for a top job. Would we stay up if we get there? I think so. Fingers crossed the unity and passion now established at the club with everything being achieved on and off the pitch since King's arrival continues. Its been an unbeleivable start and I can't see it crashing. We are one of the best teams in the league, and just need to get through the pressure of 46 games!

Yes and even Grimes was on our radar before Frank came. Robins and Viveash did a great job and the squad showed great togetherness even then.

But Frank and his staff deserves credit too. Rather than rip it up and start again they have built on what they inherited and it is on record that one attraction of coming here was that the squad was good. I think tactics have been tweaked and we play with more tempo (even Robins often moaned about out lack of tempo at times post match). We do go a bit more direct now. But still look after the ball.

i think we have always had players making decent runs off the ball, Wright, Simms, EMC, BTA. But we used to be too slow reacting to it, Sheaf wanted a touch, look another touch and look again and the opportunity was gone or we were off side. Grimes changed that he spots the runner and delivers. Kessler Hayden pre season and when he scored the other day, made the run and Grimes played him in straight away.

Lampard also knows how to get players in the box supporting the loan central striker. See EMC, Sakamoto, Rudoni, Torp, BTA. We are even seeing it with Van Ewijk and Dasilva in recent games. Players are regularly arriving in areas where goal scoring opportunities will fall. That is coached and it’s a percentage game.

Lampard and his coaches have taken the squad up a level or two that I’m not convinced Robins and the coaches he hired could have done. Out fitness levels are insane and have played a massive part in our start to the season.

Hopefully, for any Skyblue , this IS going to be ours .
Lampard & his team have turned us around & a statement from him on our fitness levels have certainly hit home , as players seem to be at another level .
Let’s just enjoy this fabulous season & get behind our tremendous team

Not in the same timeframe, no, as it's obvious the coaching appointments made over the summer were poor and the players were confused as to their responsibilities in games.

Where we'd be had he and Viveash not fallen out will never be known.

Lampard is going to earn his money when we go through a sticky spell and it’s how he reacts to that.

It will happen as teams start to dig in a sit back against us. It’s where robins came unstuck and where we came unstuck under Lampard last season

Yea we definitely dropped 2 points at home to Hull and away at Oxford, so we should be pissing this League, but look what happened to Sheffield Utd last season, they looked odds on to go up, and ended up losing out.

Its a very long and hard season, and winter will take its toll on our flair players.
And if we lose Haji Wright or Grimes we could struggle.

In short, im chuffed to be where we are now, and im cautiously optimistic going forward. And one more quality addition to the squad in January could make all the difference.
