Des Lynam: 'BBC should stick to male Olympics commentators' (1 Viewer)

Des Lynam has questioned the BBC's use of female commentators for its London 2012 Olympics coverage.

Jacqui Oatley and Christine Still have been among the corporation's few lead female voices, for football and gymnastics respectively.

Writing in his Daily Telegraph column, Lynam opined: "I have come to the conclusion that while female presenters have done a fine job, the female voice is not so attractive for actual commentating and in some cases become grating."

The former Match of the Day anchor went on to praise the BBC for "generally doing a fantastic job in bringing the Games to us".

However, he later criticised the corporation's deployment of his MOTD successor Gary Lineker in BBC One's coverage.

"Gary Lineker, the BBC's highest-paid sports presenter who was much touted before the Games as the corporation's No 1 for London 2012, again looked as though he was playing second fiddle as the spotlight in the primetime programme turned back from the Aquatics Centre to track and field," he wrote.

"Lineker's role seemed to be reduced to that of continuity announcer. One night he even linked to a trail of EastEnders. In my view he should have been in the stadium.

"It doesn't take a genius to ask a few intelligent questions of the likes of Michael Johnson and Denise Lewis. I know. I did the job for the Olympic Games, the World and European Championships."

He has a good point. Almost every time I switch on to the olympics, there's a female commentator screeching and shouting.

In some cases it's quite frustrating

Its funny because Lucy Ward is probably the best co-commentator that the BBC have when it comes to football.

There was a woman commentating on the boxing that nearly made me shoot the tv.

I was impressed with Gabby. Nice lass and grew up around Kenilworth.

She looked good every night, had a charm and demenour without the 'big I am' attitude and made Liniker look worthless in comparison.

Michael Johnson was fantastic throughout. Praise to him especially as he had to supress his feelings for the USA on many occasion!

Wonder if Des will get thrown into a 'sexism scandal' for these honest opinions?

He's being more old-school than sexist, but it does seem to come from the old boy's club mentality. The only commentator or pundit I've had issue with throughout the Olympics has been 'Lawro', who is so catty he may as well be a girl.

Lucy Ward, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan have been excellent. John Inverdale and Lawro have been the worst, just awful.

Michael Johnson is in a league of his own though.

Bit of a coup for us to get Michael Johnson. You're not having him back America. Same deal with you for Kylie, Australia.

They're both British now.

I used to hate Michael Johnson when he was running. I think I was just jealous. Reckon he's brilliant now.

I think some of the ladies have been very good with the commentary. My favourite is still the rowing chap though.
