Doug’s model is working…..imagine the situation if he knew a bit more than nothing about football

Good news. It must carry some weight with regard to bringing the right players in. I’d be extending key players Contracts as well.

Looking forward to Doug wheeling out the long-term deck catchphrase at the next fans forum.

We're the only club on that list not in a top flight.

Excellent as a Championship side but more restricted if and when we get promotion.

It sort of does. It would have been different if we'd not picked up form but considering the recent run, having players locked in to long contracts puts us in a really strong position.

We have a gelled squad of players who, for the most are improving. Not having to do a full rebuild in the summer (unless promoted) will be a huge advert loads of teams in this division. if anyone wants to make an offer for a player we will be holding all the cards. We are in just about as strong as a poosi

But I'm talking about it as a metric, so you can't just assess us, you have to assess how it affects other teams.
I don't see it as really relevant. We're clearly in a decent position but are the others in the list?

Man U certainly aren't.

It's really not much use in isolation but i reckon it would be a decent indicator of a poorly run club if you were very low down that list (think back to the old SISU days where we seemed to turn the squad over every 24 months). It certainly makes for glum reading if you;re a Man Utd fan right now

You'd need a comparison between teams with varying levels of players on mid to long term contracts and done over a number of seasons.

I'd imagine the motivation behind the strategy differs by clubs well. Fairly sure Chelseas is to do eith getting round FFP rules

That's true. It's based on an American baseball method and they amortise the total outlay across the length of the contract. It could have them hamstrung in later years though if there are players who they are stuck with that aren't saleable assets. Really difficult model to understand, but undoubtedly some clever lawyers and accountants behind it. Doesn't feel very football, although I guess that's true of a lot of things Premier League these days.

I get you. Yeah can't speak for many on that list to be honest.

I'm not so sure Man U can be judged to have had a plan in the last 5 or so years at all. They had a mad run of loading their squad with over paid stars that just didn't turn up. But also it's got to be said they were pretty unlucky that Sancho flopped so hard, Rashford went so off the boil and Greenwood turn out to be a creep, that probably has a lot to do with bad culture at the club.

I would say they do have some talented youngsters and I don't think they are that many astute signings away from Amorim being able to make at least a functional team again. People say Vik would be mad to go there but his laser guided professionalism and ability to get the ball up the pitch is exactly what they need.

Surely they won't be in Europe next season will they, that will make things a lot easier for Amorim.

Would have to win a weak looking Europa League. I doubt it though

It's good to see us near the top of that table, but for context you'd need to see much further down the list. If the vast majority of clubs are above (say) 80%, being on 86% doesn't make that much difference.

Still better than what our % would have been in, say, 23/24 though.

Vik, Hamer, Doyle, Fadz, McNally, Dabo, BNC, O’Hare, Godden etc. all had 1 year or less on their contracts at the end of the season.

In the most recent Soccernomics studies, there is a clear direct correlation globally between the lower the yearly squad turnover and higher success (league position) - over a 3 year period is seen as optimal.

Liverpool, for example, directly and purposefully implemented this strategy in 2022/23 - make of that what you will for what that has meant for them this season, with a new manager.
