This is pure speculation though right? We’ve actually no idea who brought Austin in.

I would suggest the fact Robins said he had known him for 20 years and was on several courses with him where he really rated his contribution might have influenced Dave Boddy to appoint him.

Its a different game on each flank because you have 1 dominant foot, Ephron has a cracking cross on his weaker foot but his finishing is a lot worse, so his usual game of leaving defenders guessing and taking them on dominated by the right foot forward allows him to go inside or out effectively on the left but on the right he’s restricted as he’d be turning back on himself to go inside on the right as its difficult to quickly transition that way.

Already a strong contender for Sentence of the Year 2025

Happy to admit it’s speculation but it’ll either be Mark or Dave and based on the website interview it doesn’t seem like Mark was unhappy with Dean coming in either way?

Last season, recruitment was accepted as good. We're missing players that take responsibility and confidence is shot. Some might turn out to be misses but Badlan good, Austin bad is a massive oversimplification of things.

Before Austin we finished higher in the league every season since reaching rock bottom. And that was without much money to spend. Since Austin turned up at our club we have burned through a major amount of money and have gone backwards other than an FA cup run. This isn't guesswork.

We don't know who's idea it was to bring Austin to the club. But it was King's idea to change the way our club is run. That's his perogative. His club, his money.

Just like he brought in a fitness coach. King praised her for how fit the players are. One of Lampard's first comments was about how unfit our players are. This also isn't guesswork.

When King first took over he admitted he doesn't know much about football. Has he made some big mistakes?

I'm not getting into all that bits you've said, but on this one, I'm pointing out we all felt pretty differently about the players Austin and Robins brought in a few months ago.

Things can change both ways; one or two smart signings in Jan and we might finish the season strong with those players finding form again. If they don't, I'll be worried.

I don't know if I'm being overly optimistic but I do feel it will click at some point.
Whether a new signing or just time the new staff spend with the players will be the catalyst but I just can't believe they can go from last winter/spring to what we're currently seeing.

It such a drop off it doesn't seem feasible.

Before King took over Robins had full run of the club. SISU were happy with that as they were clueless and Robins wouldn't have come back otherwise.

So what was the role of Austin if Robins still got to choose the players?

I hope Lampard gets to choose the players he needs. My guess would be that is why him taking over took so long with the negotiations. If not I see us becoming also rans in the Championship and not real contenders we were before the King takeover.

And this is just a guess from me but I have a feeling that things went wrong between King and Robins because of the players coming in.

Find players that he and his scouts felt would be what Robins said he wanted. Recommend players to him. That's my guess based on what Robins, King and Austin have said in the past.

We are not absolute shit though. League table shows that

Get a hamer in and things would change quick imo

This is just a down year. But nothing to panic about long term

Exactly. The players were not the choice of Robins.

Are you happy with the players brought in?

It's been shown so many times on here that Robins had final say on players. Don't choose to ignore that. It's not about blame, just don't try and rewrite history.

I'm not happy with the performance of the squad this season, whoever signed them or chose them. I do think most are better than results are showing.

I agree, but would add the need for a high quality left back.

Everything on this forum lately seems to be based on the idea that the squad is terrible. It's not. We are stuttering at least in part because the recruitment wasn't completed in the summer.

There's a difference between choosing the exact players you sign and being asked if this one is good enough. Keep saying no and you end up without enough players. Or bringing in extra strikers you don't exactly need just to make the numbers up.

Apparently Lampard is wary of his track record, knowing he needs this to work for his own career let alone the clubs future and is trying to be more involved in recruitment than Robin's was to prevent it

Dougs standing by Austin publicly as he's ut he's neck on the line and his ego won't allow him to lose face. However privately, he's seething at the amount pissed up the wall, but it would be yet again more compensation to let him go, so rock and hard place

I’d actually respect Doug bling a lot more if he swallowed his pride, admitted he fucked up and got rid of him! Unfortunately it’s the right thing to do though so we all know he’ll do the opposite

If you want to know exactly who picked which players and to what extent is was Robins call, you'll probably need to slide into his DMs.

We needed cover up front and we got it. If Raphael can compete with Saka, we're ok. If not, need one more. We're not struggling for goals atm.

We're a body short in midfield and need a body to cover MVE or compete with him. Ideally, those players are people with some guts.

People keep bringing this up but can anyone find any press where the manager doesn’t say he’s happy about a new appointment/signing?

Top of my head, Dr Clare had the press from the Doug and I don’t think any from Mark but could be wrong

Has it? Is this another SBT Fact?

Doesn’t read that way from this:

I can remember Robins moaning about the club being used as a stepping stone, but that is clearly what should have been happening with 3 of them and Sheaf at a realistic valuation, there must have been £25M there.what will get in the near future, you probably need a new manager in that scenario or not!
Then we'd have a team left for L1.

No, I didn't. I said one person found players, the other said Y or N. That's two people doing their jobs. Both played a part in the good stuff last season. Both played a part in where we are now.

The truth is always somewhere in the middle, and life happens - Robins losing his mum, Viveash stuff, Lawrence getting an offer he wanted to take. Talking in absolutes isn't my speed, fella.

But that’s not what it was reported Robins role was.

There’s a concerted effort on here to spread misinformation about Robins.

Not from me, so go quote other people.

I didn't want him gone. I'm sad we've fallen away. I think we've got good players that aren't performing. I think they could improve massively if a few things change.

I'm not gonna blame Austin for where we are right now. If we don't improve, he'll bear some responsibility along with Robins, Lampard and ultimately King.

This is classic football fan mentality of chucking the baby out with the bath water.

It really isn’t all a disaster, you add a quality body in midfield and defence… we’ll be fine. The same team managed to finish 9th last season and that was with a poor finish.

Our forward options are looking good, it’s the rest of the other areas pitch that needs attention.
