Yeah I only included him cos they’d gone down, but yeah he was from a champ rival. But not one kicking around the top 6-10 etc

forgive me if this has already been said, but I’m pretty confident that Collins and Dasilva (as Kasey Palmer and all previous Chelsea loans would have been) were Viveash players that he had/trusted/wanted from his Chelsea days, albeit would presumably been given the OK by Austin and Robins, so not all on him. Probably explains why Collins didn’t get a look in after AV left.

one of my issues with the recruitment is that whilst we are trying to find players either from abroad/untapped markets and/or the standout players from L1 teams (EMC, Rudoni), we haven’t signed anyone who is say a rival teams best player or seasoned player from this division - like other teams (well Sheffield Utd) did to us.
The playoff final surely should have been a great opportunity to do that especially with the funds available (which granted needed to be spent mostly on ‘guaranteed’ goals, which although it took a while to get going, did happen), or to get someone like Callum Doyle permanently or at least on loan again.

We signed a play-off rivals top scorer tbf. He's just not been great (and in fairness to him, 10/20 mins out of position each game isnt enough to get him into a rhtythm)

We’ve got a bottom six wage bill iirc. I don’t think we can poach anyone from the top half.

And I guess this will always be the issue - we have to go and get players like Sakamoto and van ewijk and wright and hope they pay off and develop like Hamer and Viktor did.

Mmm, does make you wonder why they’d have let him go as he was their top scorer - his replacement in Maja has been great to be fair so an educated gamble perhaps?
I’m not even sure what his best position is - through the middle as part of a 2 with Simms/Wright with him I’d suggest.

Surely the whole point of a recruitment chief is to make outstanding signings? In Badlan’s case, those two outstanding signings* completely transformed the club’s fortunes in a way that no other head of recruitment seems capable of matching.

*(I would argue he made more than two but yeah)

Nearly every signing is a gamble and some could argue that we kinda lucked out a bit on Hamer and Gyokeres. A fair few on here would’ve got rid of hamer at a fraction of his eventual value during his city career and many wouldn’t have even signed Gyokeres after his loan. It just eventually clicked for both of them here. EMC was written off a few weeks ago, like simms and wright last season, players develop and peak at different times

That’s why I’m not sure you can judge Austin currently. I’m guessing we probably couldve sold Simms, Wright and MvE for decent profits in the summer. If those had gone for combined 30m+ then the whole complexion of the discussion changes….and most on here, including myself, would’ve been livid !

I still reckon Simms, Wright, EMC, Rudoni, MvE, Dovin and possibly Thomas could all end up generating more than we bought them for but a lot will depend on how we/they finish this season

As mentioned on other posts these players are better than how they’re playing….we do need a couple of additions though !

Badlan didn't. He was only here for one promotion and this talk of him being sat practically in the dug out is weird. He has had no success at a higher level and there's zero evidence he would be a good person to spend the transfer kitty that Austin had (and also could have certainly done better with). He would be at a much better club by now otherwise.

We did. Signed for free sold for undisclosed.

Come on. Adding Zain Westbrooke into your list of reasons Badlan is a good scout is some serious straw clutching. He went for about five pounds after being an overall shite signing. Who next, Bright Enobakhare?

I’d struggle to call Westbrooke a bad signing - joined on a free, played 25 times for a team that won the league, sold on for a profit. Would love a bad signing like that tbh.

It’s because the switch from Badlan was so stark. Everything else (other than the owner) stayed the same and we went from signing hidden gems and rock solid personalities to throwing money at L1 clubs and hoping for the best.

Come on, mate. You're coming out with some really ropey stuff atm. None of Haji, Simms, MVE, Saka, Binks, Dovin, Torp, Assante or Raphael (or Rudoni really) were L1 players. That's not the strategy and you know it's not.

Last season, recruitment was accepted as good. We're missing players that take responsibility and confidence is shot. Some might turn out to be misses but Badlan good, Austin bad is a massive oversimplification of things.

It was a once in a decade opportunity with the Gus and Vik sales. Amazed he has survived. Will take another decade to have a shot at the premier league.

In that case, hopefully you can have your wish of getting Badlan back, and then we can re-sign him

We have signed BTA and don’t play in a style that suits him he wants the ball in behind the centre halves our midfield is more likely to put it in behind ours centre backs. His touch is horrible so it’s a waste of time thinking he can hold it up.

The other problem we have is the length of contracts given to people like Dasilva his contract should never have been more two years maybe with a club option of one more I know this pre dates Austin but we really are stuck with him

No Dasilva is post Austin. Everyone brought in under Doug is. Though not likely to be a recommendation from him TBF. But the question has to be why we’re going after coach recommendations when we’ve got a scouting team. Could they not find anyone better? (TBF LB was a problem position for years post mcCallum)

OK, but that wasn't the point you made. If we're tackling the issue of value for money, atm you're probably about right.

In August, you'd have probably agreed Simms, Wright, MVE and Saka were worth a lot more than we paid for them.

I'm not convinced (yet!) that because we've had a sh*t first half of the season, none of his signings could turn a profit.

I think he will become a very good player for us. At the halfway stage of the season he's got the 3rd most assists in the Championship.

Not Saka, too old. The others maybe.

The entire point is VFM. Anyone can spend cash you pay your recruitment team to get the best value for that cash.

Yes he signed after play off game, so we were planning a great prem future with a four year contract for a bloke who would struggle at league one level. Plus i know wiki isn’t that reliable but he looks a small 5ft 7 to me.

I don't see how this is the deep end. All I am saying is that given the amount of money we are now spending, I think we need someone better than either Badlan or Austin. The former for some reason is unable to be criticised by some, and you have yourself even said several things that are completely factually incorrect; This includes how many promotions he was here for, his career path, and even how well he is doing at Aberdeen - even though he isn't even there any more.

Time to move on.

I agree, but if the £5-6 million transfer fee is accurate then personally I’d be expecting a player of that value to be making his own weather so to speak.

If it’s true we paid £5m for him then it’s likely yet another signings we’ve overpaid on.

He’d had one good season at Ipswich in his career. His record at Derby in 3 seasons was 9, 12, and 5.

It was a throw away comment and he likely relied on a recruitment team there. But people really are saying silly stuff to make sure no one even jokingly criticises him. No Derby fan thinks Waghorn was vfm

Eh? I know a couple of Derby fans and they were very fond of him as a player and his overall commitment

Exactly. Rose tinted. You don't care about his career trajectory, shit signings, gross misconduct etc - because all you can see is Hamer and Gyokeres. It doesn't work like that from an overall perspective, and the management team massively overachieved with a lot of shit they had to work with. If anything, they are the ones responsible for Badlan's elevated view, along with the two mentioned players.

Feel free to lobby for his return, but we really need to be looking at someone better if we are spending the kind of money we have been recently.
