I wouldn’t get too hung up on the definition of “friend” (vs “associate” etc) but clearly Robins had extensive personal dealings with him in the past and thought exceptionally highly of him. If you’re looking for an explanation of why Austin got the job then that seems fairly straightforward.

Not being funny but what does Claire Roberts know about footballing ability (I am not questioning her psychology credentials)

Footballing-wise it's miles off so Austin has to take the blame

To be fair, she's played for Aston Villa WFC before, albeit at a time before the current better state of womens football.

Doesn’t Austin do a lot of the grunt work though in talking to clubs and as such. Obvious he does more but assume the club thought we would need to do business so wanted the ground work ready to go

Does it matter if he was a friend or not though? Was brought in by Mark and Dave and even if you can make the argument that Doug signed off he’s hardly going to reject A manager he thought highly of and Dave is he?

I just like to check SBT received wisdom every now and again. And often as now it does t hold up. It’s been gospel that Robins brought him in cos they were best mates on here, always seemed a weird take considering how Austin did him dirty at the forum and lo and behold when asked for evidence it doesn’t exist.

I don't think Robins would stop working as normal tbh. He obviously thought he was the right man to bring in and pressed ahead regardless of the background stuff.

If the head of recruitment brings in players who take the team to a higher level and/or get sold on for a profit then you can safely say they’ve done a good job. By those metrics Badlan was better than anyone we’ve ever had. Not sure how else you’d want to rate him?

Personally I disagree. He made two outstanding signings, a lot of others were very poor. I wouldn't bring him back. I wouldn't keep Austin either.

This is pure speculation though right? We’ve actually no idea who brought Austin in.

If you don’t stop this shit at source it blows up into the behaviour you’ve seen on here recently where people have built a whole distorted world view based on nothing. We do it an awful lot on here. Always worth keeping check on what’s fact and what’s speculation. You weren’t around during the Sisu days but the same people giving the same shit based on fuck all were doing it then.

Surely the whole point of a recruitment chief is to make outstanding signings? In Badlan’s case, those two outstanding signings* completely transformed the club’s fortunes in a way that no other head of recruitment seems capable of matching.

*(I would argue he made more than two but yeah)

Simms can’t get in the side ahead of Bassette until recently. And Wright is out all time record signing. I’d fucking hope he’s championship quality.

Sorry man I know you love your fringe takes but the idea our recruitment 2017-22 wasn’t excellent is a mental take too far.

I am not sure why everything on here has to be so one or the other. Badlan made two fantastic signings. He also singed a lot of shit. If you want to say the only thing relevant in a five year spell is two signings then it also isn't unsurprising you don't understand why his career has not kicked on, which is realistically the biggest metric here. Austin has also made some terrible signings and I wouldn't say he is the right man either.

His career trajectory suggests that two outstanding signings in five years is not enough to kick on. As good as they were. Like I said, some on here have rose tinted glasses.

What baffles me the most is the amount of freebies we could’ve signed in the summer and chose not too.

Instead we spunked money up the wall on players who are crap and what makes it worse, expensive crap. Surely you look to sign the decent freebies first then spend money to bolster your squad with targeted quality?

first time in ages we’ve had a transfer kitty and it’s been burnt.

I’m not really fussed about his career trajectory since, his track record with us speaks for itself. Two promotions and a Championship play-off final off the back of his signings means the rose-tinted glasses are both crimson red and well-earned imo. Bouwe Bosma was pretty far from my thoughts during that period.

Not because of him but he was a key part and we can all see the difference since he left.

He got sacked for misconduct, not for being bad at his job. By all accounts he’s done well at Aberdeen too.

Exactly. Rose tinted. You don't care about his career trajectory, shit signings, gross misconduct etc - because all you can see is Hamer and Gyokeres. It doesn't work like that from an overall perspective, and the management team massively overachieved with a lot of shit they had to work with. If anything, they are the ones responsible for Badlan's elevated view, along with the two mentioned players.

Feel free to lobby for his return, but we really need to be looking at someone better if we are spending the kind of money we have been recently.

All I can see is the best years of my life supporting CCFC and a generational club changing windfall you’re right. Must look at the bigger picture.

By that metric, SISU are the best owners we have ever had.

Your analysis is too one-dimensional.

Forward wise, we definitely have a top 6 deck. The defence, however, is no where near and in midfield the mix isn’t quite what we need. 1-2 players in the Hamer profile would lift us up really well.

forgive me if this has already been said, but I’m pretty confident that Collins and Dasilva (as Kasey Palmer and all previous Chelsea loans would have been) were Viveash players that he had/trusted/wanted from his Chelsea days, albeit would presumably been given the OK by Austin and Robins, so not all on him. Probably explains why Collins didn’t get a look in after AV left.

one of my issues with the recruitment is that whilst we are trying to find players either from abroad/untapped markets and/or the standout players from L1 teams (EMC, Rudoni), we haven’t signed anyone who is say a rival teams best player or seasoned player from this division - like other teams (well Sheffield Utd) did to us.
The playoff final surely should have been a great opportunity to do that especially with the funds available (which granted needed to be spent mostly on ‘guaranteed’ goals, which although it took a while to get going, did happen), or to get someone like Callum Doyle permanently or at least on loan again.

We signed Rudoni TBF. While technically a L1 team He has one of Hudds best players in the Champ.
