Arrogant ??

loved his dribbling back in the day

I always thought he was overrated and undisciplined, he left Liverpool because he wasn't good enough to play for them. His comments about the drop in quality are probably fair in general

Totally Arrogant. He managed a total of 90 games after he left us and his career went backwards very quickly after a short but decent start at Blackburn.

He did at least stick around one season after regelation

He was never going to make it at Liverpool and ironically played more for us than any other club

Given we got relegated, all the more so.

Bit of a knobbish thing to say really! He wasn’t much special, and clearly if he was on par with the other Liverpool players he wouldn’t have been allowed to leave.
But it happens in football.

He should be thanking clubs for sticking by him and paying his wages whilst injured, which he seemed to be a lot.

undisciplined without a doubt. Had the argument that he was many times with people when he played here.
Always wandering in to areas he wasn't supposed to a prone to a reckless challenge.

Yep I agree. Had some talent and was a decent 2nd tier player but he was nothing special.

We had players at that time that would have got into that Liverpool team, there may have been a drop in the amount of staff to pamper him and repair his injuries also the training ground was probably worse.

His best stuff for us was after we got relegated which says a lot about him.

He was a class act, he is right though, how donkeys like Shaw and hall have hero status is beyond me.

He played alongside Bellamy and Hadji for two, both of whom had far more distinguished careers. Harston also.

In fairness though Thompson was injured for most of the relegation season, he was certainly no replacement for McAllister, the drop in quality worked both ways.

I liked him. Wasnt he in the liverpool side that we beat at highfield road in 98(or 99)? I'm sure Whelan got the winner in front of us in the east stand.

Sounds honest to me. Are we saying we were as good as Liverpool back then? Would be better to see the full article not just a couple of paragraphs taken out of context.

I think I remember reading at the time he was in direct competition with a young talented lad called Gerrard or something. He did ok over his career.

They won 4 trophies the season he signed for us and finished 3rd, they weren't brilliant but weren't bad either

He was better than we had tbf, but nowhere near good enough for Liverpool.
I think he was a frustrated individual as he believed he was better than he was and thought the big boys would come in for him at some stage, but it was never going to happen.

never understand the critisim of Richard shaw.

He must have played well over 400 top flight games in his career.

I got to know him a few years ago when he was living in Manchester as he used to come to same gym that I frequent. I can guarantee that he loved his time at City and *always* asked me how things were with the Club (even when I didn’t always want to speak about Northampton etc.) I passed his details onto Jim Brown and he joined the FPA. He’s a massive Liverpool fan through and through and being released by Houllier was clearly the lowest point of his career (witness his reaction to scoring at Anfield for us when he ran 40 yards to swear at Houllier) but he really did love being at City and thinks Nilssen got him into the England squad (which happened as soon as he moved to Blackburn).

In sum this article reads poorly and he may have been misguided but he’s a really nice bloke in my experience.

gonna have to disagree. Suspect he played 10 times more in the top flight that someone like Ben Turner who many of us thought was great, even after he left us and played for Cardiff.

I get that playing in the top flight doesn't always make you great, but to have a 10+ year career in their surely at least means your better than the average footballer ?

I remember my dad coming back from a game-I think against Everton-the season we signed him. He reckoned that whilst coming over to get the ball for a throw in, Thompson muttered "this was a shit move". Thought my dad was bullshitting or exaggerating at the time, but this at least bears him out!

He certainly gave his all for us though and had a great season after relegation, with some unforgettable goals.

I Saw Shaw Score. He earned that Hero status, believe me

Can still see him preparing his run up for that strike now!!

He was poor for that level but then the fans also elevated the likes of Morrell and Thorn to hero status as well
