Cheers nick that's a bit of good news that I missed. Stability at the back is key to our hopes this season

As we have seen having the best defence in the league might get you scraping into the playoffs.
However having one of the best defences in the league and one of the best attacks will get you the top three.
If we can get that attacker and keep Willis then perfect. However if we have to sell him to get that striker and Davies or Hyum have to step up then so be it. I think it’s easier to find decent defenders but really hard to get good strikers.
I think Davies or Hyum and McDonald will still be a good enough partnership.

The best defence in this league is a good predictor of a top 3 finish. Having a 20 goal a season striker does not. Portsmouth had the best defence, won the league, Plymouth and Blackpool with the joint 3 defence also got promoted. Whilst Luton, with the 2nd best defence came 4th. Crawley, Barnet, Grimsby, Stevenage, Colchester and Cambridge all had goalscorers with 15+ goals and failed to come in playoffs - most were mid table teams. To put this into perspective for you, all these teams listed had a top goal scorer with more goals than the top goal scorer of 3 out of the 4 promoted teams.

Dominant defences wins you promotion as opposed to a better attack. Case closed.
