DaSilva is a class footballer who has played all his football at left back or left wing back. He was arguably the best player in England for his age in his early years.
He has a problem and that is his height. When he plays at the back the opposition target him with high balls down his wing.
Bidwell, I think, gets beat less on a one on one near the area and JDS has lost us a few games due to this.
He has not been that bad as people on here make out. Adi says he will get better next season.
At his best, he creates chances, passes well and tackles well.
If he can adapt, I think left midfield would be better for him but depends on who we buy. A good sub at present who needs to be a good starter next season.

Remembering people saying the same cobblers about Ryan Haynes.

I struggle to see how he’s ever been seen as a defender. Maybe in young age group football. But as a Senior pro, he gets owned too often by bigger, more aggressive wide players.
He is alright at getting forward. He is brave in possession and has good technique. Being small and a bit tricky has worked for a lot of players over the years.
But I thought Robins was done with short full backs after Mason. Dasilva was not very convincing at the start of the season at LWB either.
Squad player for me and only in a wide midfield role.

Yeah, where I am with him. I don't think he's an awful player like many on here. Robins is not daft.

He does need to stop picking him for the fullback slot though. I think he's pretty decent when played further up on the left.

The fact that opposition sides specifically target him when he is left back, tells you all you need to know. He clearly has weaknesses.

Think he’ll be useful while we’re in the Championship as an impact substitute - if we’re chasing a game at LB or if we’re seeing it out at LM.

For a free transfer to bulk out the squad (especially while our academy isn’t up to standard) it isn’t the worst outcome.

Can’t see him starting many games next season unless he really improves.

Neither he nor Palmer are good squad players as they're paid a high wage.

I thought he looked like he'd turned a corner with us but his performance the other night quickly dispelled that thought

He wasn't tested defensively (thankfully)

Fair play, didn't realise he came on so late. But TBF that was 40 mins that he looked okay against expensive players knackered or not

He's a rubbish left back and an average wingback and a less than adequate left midfielder.

I have no idea other than the Chelsea obsession on why we pursued him for so long. He's too small and hasn't got the athleticism to make up for his deficiencies.

4 year contract

Well done mate. That's a solid perspective.

Shame it fell away for Sheaf.

You haven't really got a leg to stand on. Milking Sheaf when he's our worst captain for about a decade.

You’ve got zero level insight into what he’s like as a captain so stop making stuff up.

Considering he has three years left on his deal and hasn't really shown anything this season I would argue Dasilva would be quite difficult to move on if that is what the club want to do

Think the criticism is a tad harsh on Dasilva... I'll never forget Preston when he made that error in the box and the crowd spend the next 10 minutes singing Jake Bidwell pretty brutal from our 'fans'

He's a very good footballer, technically excellent but he was clearly signed to be a wing back in a back 5 where his defensive responsibilities would be less. Now we look to be building a team for 4 2 3 1 I agree its very hard to have him as our left back as his defensive awareness is poor and teams will just ping 50 yarders on him all game as he's so small. I'm trying to work out where we could get the best out of him, I'll probably get laughed off this forum but could he play as an 8 in a midfield three in certain games? I'd trust him to take the ball on the half turn and play good quality passes to our forward players but you need a gritty player next to him.

Tough one but I wouldn't give up on him yet - don't think there's any chance of selling him anyway as he's on a 4 year deal

Problem with wingbacks that come through academies like Chelsea's is that the spend a lot of time attacking and don't have defensive frailties shown up.

Yes, he signed as a WB but that comes with defensive responsibilities and him being higher up the pitch just makes it easier to get in behind him, Fact he's still getting done in a back four is just poor. The difference between MvE and him is startling.

With the length of contract I think he'll be hard to move on, so best we can do and others have suggested is use him as LW backup and remove a lot of that defensive burden. Of course that means we'll definitely need to sign a new LB (or two if MR makes the mad decision to let Bidwell leave who is perfectly reliable)

I'm with Adi on this one. He really does need to improve consistently to be first choice, which may be difficult when targeted for his height.

Haynes and Hussey were really average footballers and not great defenders. They did not show the ability to play well further forward. JDS is a good footballer who is not up to top 6 level defending on this seasons showing. JDS is a better attacker than he is a defender which leaves him short (sorry) for the player we need in that defensive position. I am hoping he can adapt as an attacking midfielder. He has the skill but mat not be able to make the adjustment. Has looked a good sub when we are attacking the opposition rather than staying back.

Maybe this is the problem. Perhaps he's seen as one of "Adi's Boys" kind of thing. MR trusting Adi to turn him into a player, more than Bidwells actual defending.

It's easy to see why Dasilva was signed, he's much better technically, close control, short passing etc.

He just isn't a full back though and gets dominated physically, both aerially and in a foot race.

I think he could only be useful there if we became a side that averaged 65%+ possession and weren't defending much. As it is he has limited use to us.

Dasilva is a good footballer. Good close control, and can go past a man.
He will do a job for us next season, just not at fullback.
He doesn’t deserve all the he gets on here.

Yeah some of the criticism is just ridiculous. People made their minds up early and that’s it. He’s made no more mistakes than say Bobby Thomas and most agree he’s he a good player.

Well opposition management clearly see him as a weak link and tend to target diagonal balls at him. Blackburn based commentary last week were saying in the first half that they need to attack Cov down their right. Compare MVE's defensive contributions v JDS. Reasonable going forward but just can't defend

Teams did the same to Bidwell earlier in the season. We have a problem with players willing to get back and cover that side.
Kitching is slow to get out there also, unlike Thomas on the right.
It’s less of a problem when Binks is playing.
