D-Day: The story of 24 hours that changed the world

An incredible article showing the struggles and bravery of the allied forces and is very moving, definitely worth a read.

"These men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate... They yearn but for the end of battle, for their return to the haven of home.... Some will never return."
- Franklin D Roosevelt, on the night of D-Day

Watched it on BBC News, lovely tribute to those that were there. As one old soldier said, it's the last big D-Day anniversary that any of them will be around for. Must ensure heroes like these, along with all the others who have given their lives for our liberty, are always honoured.

Ironic that it’s their children’s generation who are happy to put the peace their parents generations fought for at risk.

Blimey, that landing could have killed him...

We just can't imagine what it must have been like back then. The word heroes is used a lot these days, but these old guys really deserve that title.

Harry Billinge was 18 years old when he became one of the first to land.

He has told BBC News how a friend died in his arms on the beach. He says he doesn't want thanks for what he did on D-Day: "I'm no hero, I was lucky."

He added: "I knew a lot of good men, all lovely, young men, who are not here who paid the sacrifice. They went the whole way - the seven miles and then another mile after that.

"I can't explain - all I know is Normandy veterans love one another beyond the love of women. If you're in the ground in a hole with a bloke you've got to know him."

Mr Billinge - whose dad gave him the advice "keep your head down!" before he left for war - has helped raise more than £10,000 for the statue commemorating his fallen comrades.

It will form part of a larger memorial which will feature the names of the British troops who died.

Wow I didn’t know the EU had such influence in America, when was the last time Neo Nazis and the KKK hailed the election of a president?

Has there been a rise in right wing party representation in European Parliaments in the last decade?

You will of course again refuse to answer

Yes but it’s an issue in the west in general and not just in the EU.

I said no such thing, they were two separate points. The fact a president has been elected and his appointment was hailed by Neo Nazis and the KKK says it all.
