YOUNGSTERS OVER INJURY SCARES
COVENTRY City survived an early-season injury scare yesterday when X-rays confirmed that teenage talent Billy Daniels did not break his foot during Saturday's 1-1 draw at Yeovil.

The Bristol-born midfielder, who graduated from Gregor Rioch's Academy to sign professional terms this summer, limped off five minutes from the end at Huish Park and Sky Blues initially feared he had fractured a metatarsal.
But it has been confirmed that the problem is nothing worse than heavy bruising and he could face Sheffield United at the Ricoh Arena tonight along with full-back Jordan Clarke, who is confident of passing a morning fitness test on the knee he twisted on Saturday.
If Andy Thorn decides not to risk Daniels, Steve Jennings could make his competitive debut four days after becoming City's ninth signing of the summer.
The Sky Blues boss has to make one enforced change because of the hamstring injury that has sidelined John Fleck. Either Gary McSheffrey, a substitute at Yeovil, or Carl Baker will come in at the tip of the diamond in place of the young Scotsman, who was all set to sign for The Blades a year ago until registration red tape sabotaged his switch from Rangers at the 13th hour! “It's a blow losing a player of his quality so early in the season,“ admitted Thorn, “but these things happen and you just have to get on with it. This will be a big test for us against a team who are clear favourites for the title this season so it will be great if we can start like we finished at Yeovil because we got better as the game went on.“
Coventry's development squad lost 3-1 to their Blades counterparts at the Alan Higgs Centre yesterday.
Danny Philliskirk added a secondhalf opener to Erik Tonne's opener for the visitors but was denied a hat-trick when Shane Fagan saved his penalty while Shaun Jeffers notched a late consolation having earlier missed a penalty and hit the post.
City defenders Nathan Cameron and Cyrus Christie both came through the full 90 minutes as they continue their recovery from knee injuries.
“They've only been back in full training for a week and a bit so they've still got some way to go but it was good for them to get a game under their belts,“ said Thorn, who also played French centre-back William Edjenguélé for the first 45 minutes.
Thorn is not pursuing his interest in Hungarian striker Peter Poloskei, who spent a fortnight training with the club and played in a couple of their pre-season friendlies. “We had a good look at Peter and we did think of offering him a year's deal with perhaps a year's option but we decided that he didn't quite fit with us,“ said Thorn, who is still keen to bring in a loan striker from a Premier League club. City have confirmed that their Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie against Burton Albion will be at the Ricoh on Tuesday, September 4, (7.45pm).

Is that necessary? He may not have had a great game, but to wish physical injury upon one of our own? Crazy. Don't forget he's a young lad being played out of position.

He is only 'terrible' because he has been forced into the side far too early and also into the wrong position.

Still wouldn't say he looks quick or strong enough to play up top, still good to have these youngsters as an option

I thought Daniels was a striker, not a holding midfielder?? Anyone else think that?

Same as last season, kids getting played too early in wrong position. When Jennings and Thomas are back.
Poor Daniels can be blood slowly in an attacking roll.
He is the victim of his own ability played out of position because he is good enough to adapt unlike others.

I think the management must think they've discovered a new position for him. It might have worked against crap opposition in friendlies, but league games are different.

The 2 key roles in the diamond are the CDM and CAM. We've lost Fleck for one, we can't put a half fit kid striker in the CDM.

Play Jennings till he tires, move Brown in as cover when this happens and Malaga on. Or Kilbane and bring baker on.

Well it does not solve the fact that we badly need a center forward. looks like we are done at this point so i will be hoping that Elliot starts to fire a few to help out Cody. Tonight is massive game. Come on the sky blues.

Players don't always end up in the position they first started out in. If Thorn/Carsley/Shaw has seen something in Daniels which makes them think he would be better at CM then fine.

Remember Christie didn't start out as a RB. There are plenty more examples of players being trained into different positions.

At the 13th hour?! Think you mean 11th hour!

For me, Jennings has to start tonight.

Thierry Henry was brought to Arsenal as a right winger wasn't he? This could go on all day.

Left, wasn't it? Started out at Monaco as a striker, Juve played him on the wing. In fact, I'm sure he played left wing against us in the 3-2 boxing day game?

Is it just me, or are these the most incomprehensible sentences ever?

Apart from the "(7:45pm)" bit at the end I think it reads pretty comprehensibly.

Not slating, just stating that he is clearly not ready for first team football

I thought there were things during the game that Daniels did well and times he seemed to struggle. I didn't think he had a stand out shocker, but thought he looked more competent in the first half than the second (or maybe I was sober and disgruntled by the second half). Either way, Jennings has been bought to play in that role. He missed most of pre-season with a knock, came on against Yeovil and I would be hopeful that he starts tonight and makes the position his own.

The season before last Billy Daniels was a striker. Last season the Youth team played him as an attacking midfielder. Why does AT insist on playing young emerging players in positions that are alien to them? It is difficult enough for these young players to break through into the first team, without being asked to do a job that they are hardly prepared for.

Magnus hedman started as a striker. Kevin Phillips played for a while as a right back. It's not exactly a new thing that players are moved position as they develop.

And if you read the thread you would have realised it had already been covered by a load of people as to how players are always changing positions.

Just because Daniels was a striker when he started doesn't mean he'll always be a striker.

Prime Example...Dion Dublin was a Defender in his early days...THEN...he became a striker but proved that he could still work in defence if needed too.

There's nothing wrong with a player changing their position. It just means they have a talent for playing in several different places on the pitch
