http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/sport/football/football-news/sky-blues-reject-wolves-bid-6506470

Coventry City have rejected a formal offer from Wolves for star striker Leon Clarke.

The Sky Blues League One rivals tabled a bid last night, hours after the 18-goal centre-forward handed in a transfer request.

City have rejected the cash offer which is understood to fall below the club’s valuation of the 28-year-old who is at the peak of his playing career, but have indicated to Wanderers that they may be interested in doing a cash-plus-player deal.

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett has a glut of strikers but is looking to freshen up his forward line up in the push for automatic promotion.

Including Nouha Dicko, who he signed from Wigan yesterday, Jackett has eight other centre-forwards on his books including Iceland international Bjorn Bergmann Sigurdarson and Scotland international Leigh Griffiths.

The others are Lee Evans, Jake Cassidy, Liam McAlinden, Eusebio Bancessi, Ibrahim Keita and Kevin Doyle.

However, Irishman Doyle’s £40,000-a-week wages would rule him out while Griffiths does not seem to fit into the Steven Pressley mould.

The City boss is looking for an experienced head to replace Clarke rather than a young talent, which would appear to rule out Cassidy and McAlinden, both of whom are only 20, 19-year-old Evans and fellow teenagers Bancessi and Keita who are yet to make a first team appearance.

Although Sigurdarson – the half brother of former City midfielder Bjarni Gudjonsson – is only 22, he has played almost 50 games for Wolves (scoring seven goals) and at 6ft 1 would appear the closest match to replace Clarke.

He cost Wanderers £2.4million when he arrived from Lillestrom in July 2012 and his agent said in November that he was keen to move on if he wasn’t getting regular first-team football.

The last striker we got from Wolves was Eastwood.

Just saying like.

Ah, it gets interesting. Good on them for turning down a low offer.

My mistake. I just thought SISU sold everyone for peanuts.

They apparently sell everybody for peanuts, whilst at the same tiime pocketing millions upon millions of transfer profits.

Good work!

Pleased to see the club are sticking to their guns and not letting Clarke go for peanuts.
If he went to Wolves he wouldn't be guaranteed a regular place,at least here he knows he'll play every match.
Love to know why he wants out though ?

Good to see them holding out for more but cash+player worries me. We all remember what happened last time we tried this with Ben Turner!

I see that lad they spent £2m on last season and never gave a chance to is mentioned. Would be interested by that one.

We'd never be able to afford Doyle's wages and he's been garbage for about 3 years now.

You mean Siguardsson? He will be on fairly hefty wages as well I would think. Jake Cassidy would probably be the most likely option.

He had a great spell at Tranmere last year and was responsible for their good form. He's a tall lad too, quite quick but CT seem to be ruling him out in terms of experience. Who says its a striker were after in return anyway. We could use money to get a striker and bring in a winger maybe from wolves?

Fair play to the club for holding out. A player + cash would be good.

Money, of course. I have said for weeks that I thought Clarke would be off in January, as someone would want to take a punt on him, given his recent form. An offer to double or treble his wages and he will go, loyalty is simply not an issue to footballers or managers. Loyalty is just for fans.

His agent will have been trying to place him, and the transfer request will not impact on his deal at his new club. As for playing every week, again that isn't an issue. If another employer offered you twice your salary to work just 3 days a week, what would you say?

I know what you mean, but it still leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
Clarke is what he is this season due to Elvis and the team he plays in.
Let's hope waggot tells wolves he can't play against us in the last game?
That could be the game we may need a point to get in the playoffs? And I wouldn't want Clarke ruining that chance by playing

Yep
Don't know what offer is and it does not mean that they will still not undervalue him. However it is a positive and so is asking for a player exchange. If SP has identified someone.

However they better insert a clause about not playing against us. That could be a season breaking match for us.

The fact he's on an 18 month contract should work in 'our' favour. I've put quotation marks around our, because I doubt it will make any actual difference if he goes for 50p or £1 million. It will be Sisu's money and they will do what they want with it.

I'm not sure you can do a clause about playing against us Dongo, unless it's a loan. Once a player is bought that's it.

If I'd been Norwich I'd have wanted a clause insisting he did play against them.

I think the rules changed after that. I could have imagined it though to be honest.

I seem to remember reading that it's not allowed in the rules but we agreed anyway.

It was about that time people started wishing for a more hard nosed owner who wouldn't get fucked in negotiations....

Think you do it as a gentleman's agreement did we not do it with Juke?

Liking the sound of this player exchange deal. Maybe cassidy and pressley is looking at dagnall becoming the experienced replacement?

If your right

I have a horrible image of them already promoted. He is getting a game after a unsuccessful season and they are playing him in order to offload him.
He scores a double and knocks us out if the play off places!

Fair comment money rearing it's ugly head again !Your right us fans are usually the loyal ones these days. I'd shoot these agents though they are a menace. Clarke is playing and scoring every week when he's fit,and that could dry up elsewhere so it has to be money then that's on his mind.

Anyone pushing for promotion Lge 1 or fighting relegation Championship would be interested.

Re Wolves avoid Doyle he has done nothing for them this season. Griffith is a good footballer and is the one I would go for.

It goes around though, last season we probably offered himmore money than other clubs, such as Scunthorpe where he was on loan before us, so we got him.

Sigurdarson is quality...smashed it on my FIFA 13 season last year. That's concrete evidence he's the one to take us to the premier league.

If he's on £8.5 per week, as reported by someone on here, it's unlikely that Wolves will want to double or treble that figure.:thinking about:
