Need 474 to win which would be a world record run chase. Or two days of batting to survive.
Probably a silly question, but can they do either?
I figure two batsmen need to make 150 and another a century.

If they survived for two days they would win the test but more chance of them being out by tea tomorrow

We've got one exceptional player in Root.. the rest are mediocre at best.

This is what happens when you focus on bringing through bits and pieces cricketers as opposed to people that can specialise in their craft.

All out for 237 just after tea.

We haven't got enough patience to hang around.

Root gone for 8, any slim chance we had of hanging on seems to be gone now. another 5 sessions to bat out with only 7 wickets left.

I wouldn't call them mediocre but extremely inconsistent. We play like worldbeaters one day then shite the next.

Root, cook and bairstow are all fine players, unfortunately Ballance is clueless and it's early in Jennings career.

They should also be worrying about wood as his zip has gone with the ball and I think Broad is about done early in his spell yesterday he was bowling early 80's, I am not even going to comment on Dawson

yep it was a day where you needed a Cook to dig in deep and hit singles all day long. Over by tea I reckon.

Well that was spineless

Question marks over Jennings, Ballance, Dawson & Wood for me.

Slightly more than question marks a big axe, I was worried for woakes getting back in but he looks a certainty when fit, I think they need to start looking closely at Broad as well. The Ballance experiment is over and Dawson isn't good enough they should go for a leggie as the alternative to Ali and also tell the captain to bowl them.

When all fit I would have

Ali
Woakes
Rashid
Broad
Anderson

7-11

It appears Rashid isn't in the test running though.

Stoneman should be next opener in 3 is a concern.

Prob is Bairstow 5 Stokes 6 is that 11 has a lot of all rounders as such and lacks out and out batters

Woakes isn't fit for this series they've said (makes 2nd team return for the Bears today)

There's not many that I'd have as automatic choices. Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Anderson, Ali and Broad would probably be it.

The batting line up is painfully week. If Root doesn't fire they are skittled out.

Don't really follow county cricket these days, is there nobody waiting in the wings to come in?

I really don't think Broad is an automatic pick anymore as he seems to think he is and his performance have dropped

Batsman wise
Mark Stoneman at Surrey would be your next choice to open.

There will be calls for Malan after his 2020 debut but I'm not sure.

Few good youngsters Tom Westley at Essex, Joe Clarke at Worcestershire & Nick Gubbins at Middlesex I'd throw their hats into the ring.

Even start of the season at Notts he wasn't doing too much!
Certainly don't think he'll have the longevity of Anderson

I woke up hoping we'd be 133-0 or 133-1 not 133 all out!
What a pathetic shower they are!

England women now playing South Africa in semi-final of 2017 World Cup. It's a nail-biting finish. Much more entertaining than the men.
Currently need 49 to win from 51 balls with 5 wickets remaining.

Making hard work of it. Needing 219 they were 139 for 2 with 19 overs left, now 179 for 6 with 7 over left.

Feisty little buggers these South African bowlers aren't they!! Bandying a few swear words about in the general direction of the England batsmen.

It's just not cricket.

If you missed it, you can see some highlights on icc-cricket.com
The BBC site won't you anything if you're outside the UK.

we beat one and lost to the other so should be interesting. It would be nice to see the ladies pile on some pressure to the fellas.

As much as I try I can't get into it as it really is a poor substitute, even the best female players are nowhere near even county standard

Whether they are as good as the men is irrelevant to me.
They can bat, bowl, field and hit fours and sixes. The standard looks really good to me.
If that is your attitude, why would you ever watch CCFC play? They are nowhere near Premier League standard!

They do all those things but worse, they bowl far slower, their batting is worse and they hit very few sixes even though the boundaries get brought in, Sarah Taylor played in the Birmingham league for walmley without any great success.

I watch ccfc play because that's my side no real choice.

I would rather watch female tennis than male though as the game has more skill but I can't see why they get the same prize money at Wimbledon
