What's the old saying? Don't judge until both teams have batted. Was more like a T20 than the opening day of the Ashes.

Is anyone going to dig in and bat properly in the 2nd innings?

Everything about it was woeful. Getting players names wrong, not knowing fielding positions, the 'facts' they were dropping in being wrong.

When you look at how good the world feed is I can't understand why they haven't just taken that. They clearly don't give a shit as they have remote comms so if they want to save money just take that feed, which is what both BT and Sky have done in the past.

I get why Sky won't pay big money for tests that are overnight with very low viewing figures but says a lot that they've sent Nas and Athers out to do a podcast and bits for Sky Sports News while TNT have their commentators here in England.

I especially missed the expert technical and tactical insights that the Sky team do so well. There was literally none of that this morning. Really poor.

Cant wait for the 'one day' day night game if the current standard of batting continues

There's been a couple of cycling fanboys who have spent the last few weeks responding to any tweet concerned about TNTs plans for coverage saying the cycling chap was fantastic and people were worrying about nothing. They've gone very quiet this morning.

Annoyingly it seems that the much publicised 'BBC will have highlights' is actually a 5 minute recap on the BBC website.

If you have a VPN and set it to Australia you will find the Channel 7 coverage works. Well it does at the moment, they might at some point lock it down a bit more.

Sums up the issue with TV rights and the companies complaining about sticks etc. You can pay a few quid a month for a VPN and get decent coverage or pay a small fortune to TNT and get shit coverage.

Not sure how long TNT has to go - did BT sell it ? Rebranded ? Wouldn’t be surprised if DAZN picks it up or Amazon which would be a bit of a fucker as you can’t always get Amazon

BT was purchased by Warner Discovery who also owned Eurosport hence that disappearing and the programming being rolled into TNT which is an American channel name they decided we needed here.

They don't seem to have rights to much. The 12:30 Saturday Premier League games can't be that popular as anyone who actually goes to games on a Saturday can't watch. They've lost the Champions League to Paramount+, which opens the door for some FTA games on Channel 5 as it's the same owners. Cricket in the middle of the night can't get you that many viewers hence nobody else bidding.

What else do they have? Non league football which probably sells zero subscriptions, Premiership rugby which I remember when Wasps were here the viewing figures were appalling.

That's about it. Surely must be running at a loss. Hard to see it being sustainable long term.

Or you can pay nothing and watch on illegal streams, which is what people will keep doing if you have to pay goodness knows how many different companies to watch all the games from one competition.

What a great day of cricket!

England should get a modest first innings lead of, say, 30-40. We need to bat better in the second innings and win this test: we can't afford to let the opportunity slip, as I'm sure Australia will come back hard at us in the second test by when they should have a full-strength pace attack.

I pay £100 a year for an NHL ice hockey subscription. For that I can watch every single game live or on demand switching between the home and away broadcasts.

For football involving PL teams I need Sky, TNT, Premier Sports (for some preseason and random tournaments), Amazon (have they got anything going forward?) and now Paramount+

And if I do pay for all of those I'm still missing a decent chunk of games with the 3pm Saturday blackout and random games at other times not being shown.

No wonder dodgy sticks are so popular.

And with a VPN, every PL or Championship game is streamed live. Even at 3pm Saturday!

(So im told)

Champions League matches in the UK will be shown by Paramount from 2027 after the US company wins the broadcast rights for the tournament.

I ditched BT/TNT a year ago and moved to Sky.

BT/TNT's customer service is incredibly abysmal. I had to sue them to get my money back - successfully So, even though I love test cricket, you couldn't pay me to go back them!

Be warned if you are tempted!

That's why Root is the key wicket. He's got to bat his normal game and let the others get on with it

The Ashes 2025 highlights - day one: England fight back against Australia as 19 wickets fall

Captain Ben Stokes took five wickets as England's fast bowlers sensationally tore into Australia on an electrifying opening day of the Ashes.

Think highlights is pushing it a bit as I’d expect 30 - 60 mins but better than nothing

Channel 7 has coverage in Aus and that’s free to air so if you’ve got a VPN there might e something better on their site

Quite good. Badly edited.

Is Panorama so in a hole about what it can and can't show they're having to show the Ashes highlights to fill the time?

Definitely is some take. I think that They Always do bowlers a disservice when they show them in slow motion as it makes it look a bit easier than it is. Especially the quicks on their follow through.

For fuck's sake, was literally just typing that after losing those 2 quickly we need to hunker down a bit. Was a good start but momentum starting to shift, need a solid partnership now
