Looks a bad one for Woakes, will miss the hundred as well and could be struggling for Australia.

Well that didn't take long. Pleased for Atkinson.

Just back from injury, at least he had a run out for his county's 2nd XI unlike Overton. I heard an interview with Stokes yesterday where he said the next time he'll play cricket is in the ashes!!

Injured, just like all our other decent pace bowlers. He has just done a fine job of mopping up their tail though. Just a shame that Archer, Wood, and Atkinson can't do more than 2 tests in a 5 test block between them.

"Atkinson now boasts an average of 21, the fourth best for an England seamer with fifty or more dismissals, and the second best strike rate, ever, at 34.9, for those who have taken 60 wickets."

Going to need a lot of runs and then Tongue & Overton to bowl a lot better in 2nd innings (god knows which you give the new ball to). Got to bat at least until late tomorrow with this weather forecast.

Strong start with the bat, perhaps fortunate to avoid a catch when that edge lofted up, other than that confident stuff.

Such a ridiculous bit of play from Duckett! Typical "bazball" stupidity at its finest!

Infuriating to watch really, especially when he tried and failed doing it almost immediately before.

They're a batsman down and down to a 3 bowler pace attack. India are offering up plenty of free runs so absolutely no need to do it.

People still don’t quite get it. You don’t get to the score we’ve got to playing in a conventional way in conditions like this. You can’t have the good of overly aggressive (‘bazball’) cricket without accepting some of the bad.

Of course on its own that shot looks absolutely horrible but to get to 90 for 1 in conditions like this is great going and has put pressure on India

Having reached that score, not long before lunch, you've done the difficult bit. It's then stupid indiscipline to give away your wicket like a prat.

Quite. Almost like you play aggressively in spells rather than the cricket equivalent of shooting from everywhere.

If Duckett doesn't play he scores a lot less runs

He will score more in the long term by knowing when to attack and when to be solid.

If it was a flat pitch and no movement I’d maybe agree but you allow bowlers to bowl line and length on that pitch, in those conditions and you’re likely to get out sooner rather than later anyway. By doing scoops etc it makes it a lot harder to bowl consistently and set a field

It wasn’t that long ago that Dom Sibley wouldve been grinding out 12 off 60 balls inviting pressure on him and the team and England would’ve been 30 for 3 an hour after lunch.

It was a poor shot but no issue with the mindset under the circumstances. Anyway well in the mix after a pretty poor bowling display yesterday so let’s hope we can make the most of it this afternoon.

Clearly just going to have to agree to disagree, but from my admittedly just club experience, you score more runs overall by learning when to put your foot on the gas and when to sit back. Shortly before lunch, nearly 100-0, seems a no brainer to just dial it down then pick up again in the afternoon.

Its why England were right to go hard earlier though

India out for 224 with Overton, Tongue and Bethell in our bowling attack and Woakes only able to bowl 14 overs, said it all. The way it’s looking a balls gonna have your name on it sooner or later

Edit - I appreciate that if it starts getting a lot easier to bat as day goes on, the overly aggressive approach might prove to be wrong

I didn't disagree with going aggressive at the beginning, I praised it. My issue was not dialling it back at the right time, which is nothing to do with cricketing ability, it's about discipline.

It’s a contradiction as most successful shots are also high risk the way they played.

Ironically I feel like we’ve gone a bit too conventional since lunch.

Where does Overton think that’s going under the stumps?
