Set pieces are poor throughout the side, we’ve very limited numbers who could take responsibility with them. Was the same last year with JJ on corners, they were shocking. Kelly was marginally better but not great the same with Shipley.
Even Connor Chaplins effort with the free kick was hitting the wall before he struck it. Tony Andreu is the one who’s the better all rounder on what we’ve seen but needs to play a deeper central role to be considered for selection in my eyes. He’s finally playing that role today for the u23’s

Doyle has taken them over Andreu also.

Has to be tactical and from the training ground with MR blessing surely? You referring to corners?

are you getting that from the formation picture on twitter or do we have confirmation its not 4-5-1 with him behind bakayoko?

Just the way I looked at it, tho from the reports coming through it seems he’s quite advanced forward still by the amount of action he seems to be involved in. For me I’d like to see him playing in a deeper central midfield role.

Shame it's not like the NFL. He could be part of the kicking team and we could just bring him on for corners.

You say Sterling and Thomas can't cross when people are saying Doyle can't take corners or free kicks. Did you see Doyle's attempt at the weekend, the one that nearly cost us a goal from a counter attack?

Do you have selective reading? I have literally said I don't think he should be on corners.

However as i said. Robins sees them everyday in training, he has a much better understanding of their skills than you, or I.

I was talking about a cross...

People are talking about his set plays generally. Both free kicks and corners.

Doyle isn't exactly meant to be on the Wings crossing the ball though is he?

Yes and I have said he shouldn't be on them in an ideal world. But if somebody was better do you not think Robins would let them take them?

I don’t mind Doyle taking some free kicks but not every one when it’s a simple pass to another player. It’s also pointless him playing centre back when we have two ball playing defenders and in Davies a much better long passer than he is.

We played well yesterday but should have won 3-4 nil. You still only get 3 points though

But we would be one place higher

Really struggling to remember us having many (quality) dead ball specialists in recent years - Cole and Maguire only played a handful of games, ditto Maddison... beyond them I can only really think of Danny Fox, with mentions for Clingan and McSheffrey (1st spell)

I'd put Sterling on corners, his crossing is decent

Yes, good shout. Doyle's corners tend to end up in a throwing for the opposition.

Joe Cole was one of my favourite players growing up. If he disappointed in overall play the one thing he made me realise was how good a set piece delivery he had, and more to the point, how shite ours had been for so long

Thomas can't deliver a decent cross so what makes you think he can deliver corners?

I think they key thing is that, Robins sees them everyday in training maybes he's the best of a bad bunch..

Its fair to say Doyle decides who takes set pieces - Robins has admitted he selects himself for the first team every week

You realise that's a figure of speech? Robins decides. Where is your evidence for otherwise?

and 15 free kicks absolutely wasted over 2 games. His inswinging corners have been decent from the right side. Has as much to do with Davies back in the side too.

Don't bump a thread and then argue like my 4 year old. It's great we've come good from corners from one side. He is still running over to any free kick that isn't 5 yards outside either penalty area and then taking woeful free kicks. You can't score from every free kick or corner, especially not in L1 as players miss chances (JCH should have had a hattrick of headers today) and players execute poorly but that's not an excuse for accepting mediocrity, which is a generous description of how our set pieces have been.
Prior to today we haven't won a game by more than 1 goal and that's been to some extent because we have wasted almost every corner and free kick we've had. Now we're getting the tip of the iceberg right but imagine how dangerous we'd be if half our corners from the left side were also as dangerous or 33% of our free kicks from midfield threatened. I just want us to win every game and every wasted free kick or corner is an opportunity lost. Of course I don't expect PL levels of quality but we can (and have started to) do better. Leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of glory.
