why can't they?

Because their at home and they can’t just sit back and expect to soak up pressure and catch us on the break.

We saw last night when they scored, it woke us up and we equalised in two minutes after a bit more clinical pressure on them.

The balls Rudoni consistently gets to completely disprove the theory that they just don't get the service, we actually get quite a few reasonable quality balls into the box every game, our strikers just have no desire to properly attack them.

Or they create the space to allow for the late arriving midfielder

I think if we score the first goal, their plan goes out of the window. Haven't there been times this season when their fans have been booing them, despite the amount of time spent in the top 6. Think the place becomes nervy if we can grab the first goal.

If agree. As the minutes go by the more I think it's all set up to go horribly wrong for them, IF we get our approach right

Although of course I'd rather it was 1-1

Of course.
Hopefully, we come up with a plan, they are all keen to put things right and get at them.
Sakamoto had them in bits at times, we need more of that, some bravery and aggression. All it takes is for their fans to get a bad feeling and things could start to swing in our favour.

It was only a few games ago they booed their players off the pitch, sat in 4th place doing that is wild!

He really did. You could see their winger dropping back to help the LB out every time after he'd been booked.

After an hour if it's still 0-0 then you bring Simms or BTA on and go two up top imo

I’d be tempted however I have doubts over EMC’s ability to last 90 after a decent time out

Yeah this exactly. That's all it takes, just to get them worried enough to start getting on their backs and it can all change.

Frustrating result but on the flip side Sunderland can’t deploy the same game plan they did last night at their place which I think will suit us more.

Last few years we’ve turned them over at the SOL, comfortably on a number of occasions. Weirdly I think it might work in our favour them winning, almost gives them a false confidence. More open game without them putting 10 men behind the ball and slowing the game down as much as possible will see us a better team.

First goal is key, we get it and we blow them out the water…I hope

I wouldn’t be alarmed as a Sunderland fan if my team employed the same successful winning tactic. We haven’t coped against it all season.

3 players challenged Haji for the ball for Rudoni’s goal. There’s been several goals this season where defenders gravitate around Simms too e.g. Paterson’s goal v Pompey.

there’s every chance we can go there and win . but can just see it playing out like it did last night, wer‘e even more predictable away from home, missed a massive chance yesterday didn’t get why we played BTA when we were hoping to score from crosses and long throws, least simms gives a bit of height in there, BTA got the nod because of 20 mins Saturday against Boro’s high line, wasn’t the game for him

Worth saying, they will get absolutely mullered playing like that against Sheffield United if they see the job through

As much as I can’t stand the greasy little Judas, O’Hare would have a field day against them playing that negatively and would find the little pockets of space

I hope it does go the same way as last night. On another night we break the dead lock and do not gift them two goals.

I’ve seen plenty of talk about how their manager engineered a tactical masterclass… That’s a stretch. Sunderland defended well and we’ve made two errors that lead to two goals.

Yes, Judas is very very strong nonsense.

Reprimand Liverpool fans for treatment of TAA - good.

Calling COH a rat or Judas - also good.

Hmm.

Not saying we lost last night because of the ref at all! We lost because of shit defending twice! But I find it galling that the Referee effects the way we play by booking 4 city players during the game which in turn effects the way they play? He booked one sunderland player Cirkin because he persistently fouled Sakamoto even after his booking. Happens quite a lot against city and I think we are not aggressive team at all, bording on powder puff sometimes

Do you miss the final (not that we’re getting there) if you get another booking in second leg?

We’re just so ponderous under Lampard it can get incredibly frustrating. I feel like if we put someone through one on one he’d stop and check back to the CBs.

The plan is to overload one side and get the midfielders supporting the strikers in the box.
We just didn’t manage it
Saka was great but apart from the goal it was just bta in there

Jeez, we lost 2-1. That appears to be a cause to immediately write off some of our top players including Wright who is comfortably one of the best forwards in the division. Over reaction

Exactly, we all know how to play against us and wer‘e always giving goals like that away, perfect away game for them, thats a few games now where we’ve changed a winning team and lost ?

I don’t think we need to change the team too much to be honest for the next leg, it will genuinely be a tactical decision to be more direct…create more chances, likely to see a tonne more crosses into the box from us, longer and faster paced balls. I’m feeling good about the return fixture.

We dominated possession, we didn't dominate them. The game went to plan for them.

We dominated possession against Derby, Plymouth and even to a lesser extent Sheff U yet we lost all 4 games.

Spot on.

That's what happens when you have a midfield two of Sheaf and Grimes and no striker who can hold up the ball.

To be fair Sunderland wouldn't play like that in a final, it was a specific situation to counter Lampard's tactics.

Ballard came in to cope with all the crosses and long throw ins and we played two quick strikers to keep your back line under pressure.

When we played Sheff Utd last time we had twice as many shots on target, and won, so we know we can compete.

In any case it might be Coventry playing them, we were 2-0 up last time and f*cked it up

Exactly this, they were more than happy to sit back with everyone behind the ball while we tapped it around. Not like their keeper was making world class save after world class save.

They had a plan, exactly the plan most people would have expected from a visiting team in the 1st leg, and exactly the same plan other teams have executed successfully against us, and we had no answer to it. We just persisted with more of the same hoping something would happen.
