Visit Historic Coventry | The Stag on Bishop Street/Lamb Street, is re-opening soon, 🍻🎨🎶 | Facebook

The Stag on Bishop Street/Lamb Street, is re-opening soon, 🍻🎨🎶 Great news for the City Centre, and one of our historic buildings/pub. With over 200 years of history, it’s a stunning building inside...

Great to see The Stag is reopening.

Let's hope someone can get the Town Wall Tavern reopen.

I think I read somewhere recently that town only has 15 pubs now. I thought surely that can't be right, but I am struggling to name that many

There were SIX in Gosford Street when I lived there and if you stood in the right spot you could see all six of them.

That doesn't include the pubs which were converted to shops many years earlier.

Hand & Heart. Hertford Arms. The Gosford?. Beer Engine. Peacock? Can't think of another. How many are still going down there?

The six in Gosford Street were The Colin Campbell, The Oak Inn, The Mermaid, The Fox and Vivian, The Peacock and The New Inn of which only the Colin Campbell is still open.

The others you mention were in FAR Gosford Street.

Got me thinking of the 15 now!

Phoenix
Ivy House
Earl of Mercia
The Yard
Slug and Lettuce
Golden Cross
Flying Standard
The Stag
Cov Cross
Down Town
Philip Larkin
Town Crier
Dhillons
Hops microbrewery
Cosy Club
Botanist
Gatehouse Tavern
Artisan
Mr Shenanigans
Windmill
Spon Gate

You’ve then got Triumph Brewery and Sky Blue Tavern just outside the ring road and the West Indian Club and Fairfax Club.

I suppose the Empire also acts as a bar on Saturdays when they have live music or show the football etc. and I suppose a couple of clubs Cobra and whatever the Dog and Trumpet is nowadays.

Must be a few more I’ve missed.

I forgot the Squirrel and you could add Glamorous and Heat in to those just outside the ring road.

Lanes was the old Bar Coast

Abandon I think might have been the Planet / Eclipse

Bar Cuba was what I think is now Artisan

Zest was at the top of the Burges, maybe next to the bookies. Only went in once.

Struggling to recall the others

Yes.

The entrance on the right used to be low enough to drive a horse and cart through to a grassed area at the back. The rag & bone man used to park his cart there and us kids left outside handfed his horse with the grass while our parents were drinking inside.

It's in my top 5 Cov pubs. I doubt they'll change much but there seems to be a bigger push towards food. Fully understandable really.
