Won away at Nottingham Caesars 6-26

Jets commanded the game and should have won by more.

I used to be an avid follower back when they were the Coventry Bears. Used to follow them home and away.

What sort of attendance do they get these days?

There seems to be a hard core of 40to 60!

I'm new to all this (Watched a few times last season) This season they are playing at Coventry Sphinx ground. Home game next saturday.

I am starting to enjoy the sport. They are a team. It helps if they win but even the tough games are entertaining.

Admission is FREE......

The roster is up to 50 now and they all pay subs for the pleasure of playing for the Jets.

Free now? Used to be about a fiver.

When I went they used to get a couple of hundred or so and would put a coach on for the away fixtures.

How do they afford to keep going then if it's free? Is it all from subs from the players?

Not sure where the funding comes from. The subs come out of players bank accounts so that may be the only regular income. Circa £500 per player I guess.

They have to pay game officials, traing venues, match day home and coaches for the players. They used cars some games but this season the roster has gone up by about 12.

Last season it was at Coventry Saracens who had opened the bar as well

Coventry Jets needs more support. Heaven knows what they would do if 150 were there! The atmosphere is still good though. Not sensible to take the mick out of the opposition but it is good when you see oppositon going ape when a decision goes against them.

I was one of the original founders of the trhen Warwickshire Bears in 1982 who then became the Coventry Bears.
Those who great days, never won many but had some good Sundays around the Country.
The best coach they ever had was Gerry McManus, he came to us as a fresh faced 18 year old, went on to play for his Great Britain.
The problem with American Football is every one wants to play and no one wants to do all the Admin and organisation, like most sports the real work is done off the pitch.
I am also luck enough to have been to a Super Bowl (1990 in New Orleans)

Must get up to a home game this Summer.

What's your surname Steve, it's not Brown is it?

I recall a Steve Brown who was one of the main organisers of the Bears.

When I went to watch they mainly played at the then Mercia Sporting Club.

Which often means going in hard, some injuries are caused by the kit they wear/ choose not to wear, tactically quite different according to conditions. There are games when the ball is on the ground, for example when the weather is bad. The pitch is narrower and therefore any plays are condensed in to the field. Team play/tactics are different. Ther are 4 'captains' with offensive and defensive 1st and second lines.

Rugby players have the edge on stamina and resillience. The squad rotation in American Football has a pool of 50 players to pull from.

I was on the Offensive line when I played (No73), still have most of my kit.
Had such fun times in the early years but I ended up doing the Admin than playing.

Played Rugby through the Winter and American Football in the Summer, a lot of us did. All that contact takes its toll, but no regrets..

Yeah, American Football is a lot more tactical than most give it credit for. As you say though at any given time there's only a third of the team actually on the pitch and the game isn't nearly as continuous as well as being 20 minutes shorter overall.

As it goes I just can't find a game of rugby entertaining-despite the deluge of ad breaks NFL still has it beat.

Yeah, agree.

Also, the thing that frustrates many rugby fans is the fact that penalties are awarded and no-one quite seems to know what they are for. Half the time the commentators on tv are baffled.

Such a fine line between an infringement and a lawful bit of play and that can cost your team 3 points. Seems grossly unfair at times.

I do like rugby and always watch the 6 Nations, but for me American Football is so much the better sport.

6 Nations is the only exception and then for me it's more about wanting England to win than the rugby itself. The number of times a player trapped under 3 or 4 men was penalised for 'not rolling away' or 'not releasing' had me baffled.

I love NFL, but can't get on with rugby. I prefer League given the choice. Cricket and baseball are pretty much the only other two sports I could watch but have no idea if I'm watching a good game or not.

Nottingham Caesars 6 v 26 Coventry Jets , April 27th 2013, Harvey Hadden Stadium, Nottingham

The Coventry Jets kicked off their 2013 Premiership campaign with a decisive victory over Divisional rivals the Nottingham Caesars. The Caesars were playing their third match of 2013 but never looked like threatening the new look Jets with veteran quarterback Stuart Franklin at the helm. Franklin, an off-season signing from the Leicester Falcons stamped his authority on the game on the very first drive, culminating in a precision 26 yard pass to wide receiver Sam Hyde in the endzone. The Jets young, hungry , defensive unit were in excellent form, giving the offense tremendous ball position on several occasions.

Rookie Josh Cooper came up with two interceptions in his very first game as a Jet. Another rookie, wide receiver Noah Ben-Haim was on the end of two further touchdown passes from Franklin before half time, the first a tremendous catch in the back of the endzone for 55 yards and the second a beautiful 43 yard reception, the Caesars defenders simply not able to keep up with Ben Haim’s lightning speed. A 37 yard run by Chris “Teflon” Hobbs close to half time placed the ball on the 5 yard line allowing Franklin to scamper over for the final score of the half. With the Jets leading 26-0 at half time, the coaches decided to blood more rookies and test varying formations and plays in the second half. Backup quarterback Fraser Oliver took over late in the 3rd quarter and showed his prowess with some excellent passing and a winding 23 yard run, being tackled by the last man between him and the endzone. On the defensive side of the ball, standout performances came from the Defensive Line and Linebacker units with Matt Favell responsible for 4 tackles in the backfield, earning him the MVP award on the day.

Defensive Captain Adam Gibson contributed with 4 x solo tackles and several tremendous hits, as did Oli Campbell and rookies Dan Hepworth ,Dan Brooks and Ralph Dicka. The Caesars were stopped short of the goal line on 4 occasions with less than 5 yards to go, testament to the toughness of the defense. With the average age of the unit only 21, the future seems very bright for this group of players. Nottingham’s only score came with two minutes to go when Charlie Paterson scored a consolation touchdown. Head Coach Paul Rickhuss commented “I am delighted with this victory, we are half way through our rebuilding process now and I couldn’t be happier with today’s performance. I look forward to our young squad facing perhaps the 3rd best team in the country next week and I am sure they will do the city proud on what will be probably our hardest game of the season.” This Saturday, the Jets have their first home game of the 2013 season against old rivals, the East Kilbride Pirates from Scotland. Kick off is at 1430 on May 4th at Coventry Sphinx Sports and Social Club in Coventry. Entry is free and there will be a barbecue and much entertainment both on and off the field. I played both sports (AF for 8 years and Rugby for 25 years) and they are very different, do not think you can say either is better or harder.
