Has anyone else heard more about this? I saw on Twitter last night, a 52 year old man has been charged with racism after making monkey gestures and sounds and using 'the n-word'.

If this is true, I'm embarrassed for us. I generally see us as collective of fans, a decent bunch. This guy, if what's said is true, should be banned for life. Absolute prick

Should be banned if true.
Being mixed race myself I'm always half on the look out for racism, and I've only ever heard it once at a Cov match in 14 years and that was a West Ham fan in the home end last season.

Found the tweet.

"@SalopSkyBlue: A male Coventry supporter in his fifties arrested for making monkey noises and using the N word. Really??? Saddens me greatly. #KickItOut"

On an individual level, I know what you're saying. But if this makes national press, and it should, we will be brandished with the same iron. Hopefully I'm wrong.

That's the problem these days though isn t it, sensationalistic reaction. I mean there are a lot of uneducated morons these days. You put a few thousand people together you will by law of averages get a handful of idiots. Labeling a club as racist because of one individual would be like calling all black people gangsters because of one gang shooting or all Muslims terrorists because of one security related arrest.

Yeah, I'm embarrassed if true too.

Will make people hear the word 'Coventry' and think racist. It's the way of the world unfortunately and we can't change that thinking.

Like Yorkshire people are mean, Irish are thick and everyone in Essex is just like The Only Way Is Essex.

There are a few clubs with racist fans. I wouldn't class our fans as these. We used to get a bit of it in the 80's, but it just about stopped when we signed some black players that were good players for us. We used to still hear things from our opposing fans though.

Most people that seem to have racist views are not as they seem. I normally say something when I hear comments. I remember once in a pub when a few lads in a big group I was with were making comments to each other. My eldest daughter walked in. She is nearly 6' and a part time model which she does for fun. She is also half Indian. One of them started chatting her up not knowing she is my daughter. Loved the look on his face when I asked him to tell her what he thought about black people

Coventry is a multicultural City. I can't stand racists. Most people are the same. Non racists do make stupid comments though.

I think people have me wrong here. I'm not calling our club or fans, racist! I'm just saying, unfortunately, it only takes one to ruin it for everyone. It's just how football and fans/media work. Other fans will always be looking for a reason to hate another group, having a racist associated with us, is a perfect reason to then pull our name through the mud.

What's the original source for this, out of interest?

As far as I heard, the bloke in question used a term which would be considered racist (and was arrested for it), but not as bad as what's being reported here.

I am not embarrassed for me, i didn't make the gesture. I deplore racism and hope they find the c**t, name and shame him, and ban him for life.

Don't think anyone is saying we 'should' be embarrassed, just that, that is the way the world is. If someone said 'Columbine' people think of the Columbine Massacre. If you asked someone to say the first thing that came into mind for the words 'Yorkshire man' then many unfortunately would say 'mean.'

It's just one 'fan' of course, but i don't think can ever stop certain people making the association. Same is going to happen with this new TOWIE thing set in Cov. If they are pretty scummy low life types in the show then people will make that association with Coventry itself.

No-one is saying that thinking is right, but it doesn't stop things being the way they are.

Some people still think black people smell and don't like the cold.

Hopefully this small little tarnish of this monkey chanting idiot will be temporary.

Not upset about it Macca. Just disappointed. The embarrassment doesn't come from the individual, as there are individuals like this up and down the length and breadth of the country. The small degree of embarrassment comes from the perception people will have and the association that comes with it.

No-one is up in arms or overly embarrassed. It's just that is a little bit embarrassing because a racist will be associated with Coventry. It's human nature even though completely wrong to make such assumptions.

I am very calm about it all to be honest. Just don't want one idiot to be in the news ahead of our on field accomplishments.

During half time when a black player came over to collect a ball he put his thumb up to a fan as the fan had said something but I didn't hear what.

I hope it was some of our fans that threw him out.............

Coventry has an international reputation for conciliation and being cosmopolitan we don't need idiots spoiling that. Especially at 52 he should know better.

The point I m trying to make is that the law of averages works against a group of people. If there are say 20000 city fans then sadly there may be a numpty like this. The world is full of ill mannered rude idiots. I see this as a slur on society not CCFC. It's a shit for brains who will be a shit for brains whether he s at football, in tesco or at home. Anyway he will unlikely attending a match anytime soon

although I agree with macca, this is not ideal to be linked to the club. Swansea had it not long ago and they handled it very well and quickly forgotten. On the other hand, Leeds didn't handle the Kirkland incident very well (mainly Warnock) and regressed already poor opinion of the club and fans back another 10 years (I know this wasn't racism but the damage to the club can be taken the same)

Racism and xenophobia, homophobia should be kicked out of football and society, I hope the club take a 'zero tolerance' stance to these cunts who wish to discriminate against fellow human beings.

Sound like racism to me. Local lads would stand a reasonable chance of being anything but white
