O'Hare needs to start in midfield (he's not a forward so pointless putting him in for Hiwula), the team needs to play at a much quicker tempo, the midfield need to offer themselves to receive the ball from the centre backs, Westbrooke and Shipley don't do it enough.

I don't think Westbroke or Ohare should be looking for the ball that deep, Kelly should be the first outlet for the CB's if were looking to play through the middle and Shipley should offer himself if Kellys being tightly marked.

Westbroke/Ohare as our more creative midfielders should be closer to their back four than ours when we have possession at the back.

Yeah but from only 3 games... (one of which without Godden).

I don’t know what happened against Bolton (complacency?) but we’re still nearly the leagues top scorers even with drawing a blank against Bolton. If we’d’ve had a similar result to every other team that’s played them, then we’d be the leagues top scorers. (I understand this is a stupid argument because we didn’t but again Godden didn’t start that game).

Well he’s not changing formation

I think Godden is a big signing he will get goals and has awareness. I think Jobello has done ok actually - I probably set expectation fairly low to be fair - but hiwula whose always been an odd player contributes zilch when the chips are down

Does the Barnsley guy play inside left? If he can it’s an obvious change. o’hare for Westbrooke as well.

The only time we’ve scored goals in quantity we’ve conceded in equal measure which suggests it’s because the opposition have forced the tempo - at home we need to and we haven’t yet - the games have been pretty formulaic and dull

i think you are correct the formation probably won’t change but I still think O’Hara, Walsh and a fit Allen will become regulars as well as Kelly, although not an out and out winger I reckon O’Hara will be more flexible in and around Godden, could work well. Just where that leaves the others Is guess work at the moment, as I’ve said earlier I think in a month or two our first team will look quiet a bit different.
The one pleasing thing from the Oxford game for me was our defence in the main and with a rookie left back stood up to all sorts of pressure, corners galore, free kicks, crosses. you can’t legislate for daft own goals

I think O’Hare can play left side but play it narrow

I think Westbrooke is harshly treated by a majority of our fans. I don't think he's been exceptional but he can pick a pass and has shown so far he has an eye for goal. He also rarely loses the ball, it's not always exciting but it's a good attribute to have. He also has improved our set pieces by about 10x fold. Shipley may be 'involved' more than him, but it has to come with the caveat that not all those involvments are necessarily good.

I agree re Westbrookes attributes and I mentioned that in my original post. In fact I even championed him last season. I like players who recycle the ball and aren’t necessarily spectacular. I even liked Clingan....

However, if we have someone on the bench who can recycle the ball well and add a creative spark then it should start. That’s been my point since my initial post. It isn’t a dig at Westbrooke but it’s our hardest game so far, therefore let’s play our best team.

Why are we people continually suggesting pushing Shipley left? He doesn't have any of the attributes needed to play wide left in a 4-3-3 (you could argue the same in a 4-4-2 to be honest).

but harsh to call him anonymous considering his goals and assists imo

I appreciate it does sound harsh based on his stats, but again (and it’s a genuine question) can you remember him doing much in games? A CM in a three cant be a passenger for chunks of the game.

And again, before anyone misinterprets, I like Westbrooke but if Walsh is as good as reported (which he is) then he could add the creativity we lack, it’s just unfortunate for Westbrooke it’s likely at his expense.

What are Westbrookes stats compared to bayliss? Isn't he on 2 goals 2 assists already?

It's simplistic. Measuring stats in isolation, Westbrooke was absolutely anonymous for large spells at Oxford. How we miss Bayliss and his ability to move the whole team up the pitch, we were camped in our own half because we had no players who could do that

How can Mason play if he's torn his hamstring. Surely McCallum will be in again.

That’s the same argument that people deployed that hiwula was considerably better than Thomas last season - the assist stat is for computer gaming. It’s utterly pointless

Dabo Can’t decide CBs tbh Mason
OHare Kelly Shipley
Jobello Godden Hiwula
Edit: any 2 of McFad, Hyam and Rose would be fine.

_____________Marosi
Dabo____Hyam____Rose___McCallum
____Walsh____Kelly___O'Hare
___Jobello___Godden___Hiwula

Subs: Wilson, Watson, Fadz, Westbrooke, Shipley, Kastaneer, Biamou

Not happy at McCallum playing three games in a week at this stage but I'm assuming Mason is injured - if not he comes in.

This is also the last opportunity I'd give to the outer players in the front three as they've been very underwhelming so far. If it's not working I'd happily take one off and push O'Hare forward and bring on one of Westbrooke or Shipley.

I'll go for a slightly scrappy 1-0. Godden

If Mason isn’t fit I have a feeling Watson will start, McCallum is a decent future prospect but was up against it last week and Blackpool have just signed a decent winger too in Scanlon.

Well it’s another decent test to see where we are. I fancy Blackpool to be one of the dark horses this season and be in and around the playoffs.

Think this should be the first real tester of the season, there start draws big comparisons to ours so should hypotheticall make for an entertaining game. Mason being back would make a massive difference the way hes playing at the moment. Hiwula has been the biggest dissapointment so far. O'Hare needs to start imo.

Going for 4-0 city. why not eh

Open, exciting game. 3-1 home win or 2-2, depends if we turn up defensively. Biggest gate so far, 7839. Hiwula to be dropped!

Haha, Not quite, but if they hadn't let my mum out, or if I hadn't already escorted my stepfather off the hospital grounds, it would have been similar!

Depends what your definition of not working is. As a unit it’s been underwhelming (I don’t think Jobello has been bad, but Hiwulla has only been noticeable for about 45 mins in all so far). However, the team (and it is a team game), have been good. We’ve won 3, drawn 3, unbeaten and 4th in the league. Did anyone realistically think we’d do better than that? I mean, it’s us, we always screw up! So I’m pretty happy with how it’s going. Today is a test, I’m interested to see how they do.
